B R OAD WAY: Enter The Automaton (2008)

After the “vertiginous adventure” of the side-project The John Venture, that is to say the improbable meeting between “the postmodern folk of Angil and the hybrid electronica of B R OAD WAY”, which is concretized by an album éponyme (left in October 2006) acclaimed by the press (Inrockuptibles, France Inter, Arte, Magic, etc) and a round of more than thirty dates (in France, Switzerland and Italy with Sole, Jel, El-P, Emilie Simon, Beat Attacking etc), the quartet inhabitant of Saint-Etienne B R OAD WAY found the road of the studio to deliver to us Enter The Automaton, its second album. Succeeding very ambient the 06:06 amndt (left in June 2005), Enter The Automaton marks an unquestionable turn for B R OAD WAY which one very strongly guesses that l' experiment John Venture them insensitive not left aces… Of B R OAD WAY indeed, one kept all at the head the memory d' a group flirtant with l' electronica of Boards off Canada, where the machines remained the keystone of this construction at the same time fragile and stable, with melodies, certainly, but very seldom with the first rank… a vision the pop one with l' school of My Bloody Valentine to some extent… While entering their automat, one (Re) discovers a group, in the true direction of the term, where the machines yield a little the place qu' they occupied before, with the profit of the song, the piano, the guitars or of the double bass. C' is a little like if our principal influence, which remains the pop music, took again the top, while not disavowing at all our cinematographic universe and the tracks but l' one had traversed on 06:06 amndt, entrusts Jan to us, which is with l' origin of the bases of composition of the group. It is true qu' with l' listen of Enter the Automaton, one is vis-a-vis an album which could find its place in l' Anticon stable, while finding an influence of groups like Velvet Underground, Radiohead or Sigur Ros… Its universe alternates between a side intimist and melancholic person (“Automatons”, “Letters in Hearts”), and a more frontal and energetic aspect (“Stop Motion”, “High Treason”). As for the video, realized by Vj Raize, if it remains faithful to the spirit 06:06 amndt, it follows also and quite naturally l' evolution of the three musicians, concretizing itself, in particular, by l' integration of the color and a more rhythmic play, precipitating the listener in an alternation of various, varied and marked feelings, of l' euphoria with the melancholy… Faithful to their cinematographic universe developed on 06:06 amndt while making a broader place with their pop influences (acoustic instruments, song), the members of B R OAD WAY agrees to us, with Enter the Automaton, with a new odyssey on still unexplored grounds. Let us guarantee that following the example The John Venture, this voyage will not leave you unscathed…

13ghosts are an eclectic band from Birmingham, Alabama that touch on numerous different styles. With two diverse singers and the band’s penchant to genre jump, The Strangest Colored Lights is tough to grasp without numerous listens. Touching on southern rock, country, americana, pop and everything in between, the band carves out a unique niche for themselves. The Strangest Colored Lights is a dark journey through themes as old as the deep south itself. Death constantly soaks into the album’s soul and adds a somber depth to the band’s ambitious songwriting. As it slowly twists and turns, the subtle beauty of the album recalls Mark Linkous and his work in Sparklehorse.
The band is nothing, if not diverse. “Beyond The Door” is more upbeat and has an almost power pop feel to it akin to The Posies. “Riverside” follows with a parade of horns the likes only seen on Calexico records. “Whip Poor Will” sounds like a jaunty Tom Waits-inspired number. No matter what spirits 13ghosts call upon on The Strangest Colored Lights, the band shows a remarkable range and a masterful finishing touch.

A Summer Beneath the Trees is still pretty ascetic, but by Wenngren's usual standards, it's practically Wagner. A lot of the credit for this newfound mass is due to Peter Broderick (who also played on the superlative Fragment EP), a young musician from Portland who worked as a session man with M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, and others, before moving to Copenhagen to join Efterklang. Here, Broderick complements Wenngren's piano with a wide variety of accompaniment: violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celesta, viola, and banjo. Höstluft and Fragment were almost accidental music– like walking by a house and catching a couple minutes of someone picking out a melody on a beat-up old upright inside. This is the fullest, most finished-sounding Library Tapes project since it was an official duo (with Per Jardsell), and may suit listeners who need more than a few endlessly revolving piano notes better than recent offerings. For fans of Max Richter, Tim Hecker, and Eluvium, A Summer Beneath the Tress is a can't-miss album.

The Silence of Love (Fargo Records) es otra forma distinta de entender un disco de versiones. Frente la mera recopilación de standards, revisados hasta la saciedad, que año tras año inundan el panorama musical, da gusto encontrarse de vez en cuando discos como éste.
Headless Heroes es un proyecto dirigido por los productores californianos Hugo Nicolson y Eddie Bezalel, acompañados por un buen número de músicos(Josh Klinghoffer, Woody Jackson, Joey Waronker, Leo Abrahams y Gus Seyffert), y con la colaboración de David Holmes, proyecto al que han invitado a la cantante Alela Diane, cuya maravillosa voz les atrajo desde su página myspace.
Alela, cuyo primer álbum, Pirates Gospel, se publicó el pasado 2006,estaba realmente excitada por el hecho de utilizar su voz en otros proyectos, sobre todo porque “era bastante liberador no preocuparme en que era mi disco, o que era un estilo distinto al que yo suelo hacer…"
El disco de versiones tiene el encanto de recrear clásicos perdidos o canciones ocultas, como se quiera llamar, de artistas que ahora son reivindicados por aquellos que conforman el nuevo folk, y que no tuvieron la popularidad que sus compañeros de generación (Vashti Bunyan, Juicy Lucy, Jackson C. Frank, Linda Perhacs, The Gentle soul o Philamore Lincoln).
Junto a ellos hay otros tantos temas más recientes, desde el clásico de The Jesus and Mary Chain Just like Honey a Nick Cave o I am Kloot.
