Mia Vigar - True Adventures Happen Inside Your Head (2008)

Follow the map from Joanna Newsom’s ‘The Milk-Eyed Mender’ over a hump-back bridge to Lullatone and Piana, then take a left at the fork where CoCo Rosie meets Tegan & Sara, and we get an idea of the kooky ascetic that Mia Vigar chart. Having recorded under the monikers Luma Lane and True Adventures, Mia Vigar dons her own name on this her first album, ‘True Adventures Happen Inside Your Head’, and brings along collaborators David Brewis (Field Music), members of Sennen and Master Solo. It’s a pajama-pop aesthetic that finds Vigar’s child-like voice spar with toy-town indie-pop and a whisper of bath-time psychedelia, Vigar’s juvenile voice the kind Japanese artists Konki Duet and Piana inhabit, with Vigar singing tales of seashells and love earned, people speaking backwards, and trading toy soldiers for real boys.
‘Seaside’ and ‘Wondering Through Your Window’ are wonderfully dreamy and Vigar’s voice sounds like a child’s reverie, the former with nursery rhyme verse, toy-box electronica and slow piano, the latter features a warmth of synth chords à la Readymade F.C., while the bouncy ‘I Dare You’ has a Ting Tings-like choppiness with cha cha - imagine Half Man Half Biscuit doing girly-pop about a crap diner and you get the drift, Vigar singing with an almost mockney accent - “…let’s just get out of here/ and make a run, run, run/ for it/ I dare ya…”. ‘Wish You Rocked My World’ will keep Belle & Sebastian lovers happy (there’s even a lyrical reference to Glasgow), while the ethereal and imagistic ‘Fur’ is like wearing a fur coat with no knickers (I guess!!!) as celestial electronica meets hovering angelic vocals and a distant kudo drum is heard as Vigar sings - “I’ve been waiting around for you/ to ask me over/ you’ve got some healthy things/ I think/ I’m bowled over…”.

It includes covers of standards (Billie Holliday “Solitude”, Bessie Smith “Easy come Easy go”, Dolly Parton “Down from Dover” and other more recent titles: Espers “Children of Stone”, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “Salvation”, The Decemberists “The Crane Wife”).

Everything's coming to a end with the swansong from Iowa City's Raccoo-oo-oon. Following up last years critically acclaimed Behold Secret Kingdom (RTB/Not Not Fun), the final album takes everything up a notch and shows a band taking their last breath and laying down the last bricks in their fairly short history.The album blends together all different parts of Raccoo-oo-oons discography, taking cues from the utter freeform punk madness of The Cave Of Spirits Forever (Time Lag), building something completely new of the era that was Behold Secret Kingdom and yet delivering echoes of the eclectic Mythos Folkways recordings. The album reeks of desperation and a feeling of going down with nothing to loose at all. A fucked up future-prog mayhem that is all over the place and at no known place at all at the same time.
Genuinely uncomfortable, desperate and just beautiful, this album will surely be remembered as the most important recording that Racco-oo-oon ever put to tape. Minds are melting, new grounds are covered and things will never be the same.
A playtime of close to 75 minutes over 7 tracks.

The Longest Day is a two-piece space-rock/post-rock/shoegaze music collaboration, half of which lives in Sydney, the other in Canberra. The band formed under the same inner western Sydney roof in 1997, initially inspired by the noisy lo-fi creations of Flying Saucer Attack, and influenced by the dreamy wall of guitars produced by bands like Ride and My Bloody Valentine.
