_Soul Jazz is always worth keeping an eye on for some interesting tunes, but movie fans are getting in on the act with Can You Dig It? Black Action Films 1969-1975, which is out today.
Available as a two CD set or limited edition double album set, it charts the rise of black action flicks from the late 60s onwards, throwing in a 100-page booklet, a limited-edition mini-film poster, cards and stickers. There's some very cool soul and funk on-board too, from the likes of James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Willie Hutch and Roy Ayers, helped along by some big arrangement from Quincy Jones, Johnny Pate and JJ Johnson.

V.A. - LAFAYETTE SOUL SHOW
Hablar de la música hecha en la ciudad de Lafayette (Louisiana) es hacerlo sobre la figura de Carol Rachou, creador del sello La Louisianne que nació a mitad de los años 50 en esta ciudad. Carol grabo muchos discos de grupos y artistas locales de cajun y, ya en os 60 a grupos de swamp rock y de soul. Este sello, junto a clubs como Landry's Palladium, The Bayou Club, el Derby Room o el Roof Garden dieron cobijo a los jóvenes talentos de la música que se creaba en esos días en esa ciudad a mediados de los 60. Esto dio una buena cantidad de singles que Carol Rachou edito tanto en La Louisianne como en su hermano pequeño: Tamm. La música creada allí esta lógicamente enraizada con la música tradicional del lugar, lo que le hace tener unas características que le diferencian del sonido de Detroit o el de Memphis. Son influencias que se mezclan muy bien con el gospel y el soul de finales de los 50, pilares fundamentales dentro del estilo. Además, hay que tener muy en cuenta el origen racial de los artistas que salieron allí: muchos de ellos eran criollos negros, con lo cual, en su genética música tanto el cajun, el zydeco y sus músicas precursoras.

DOROTHY ASHBY – AFRO HARPING
Miss Dorothy Ashby (nacida en 1932 como Dorothy Jeanne Thompson ) fue, junto a Alice Coltrane, las interpretes de harpa mas conocidas dentro del campo de la música negra americana, y no se si la únicas. Realmente era un autentico reto meter un instrumento eminentemente clásico en la sonoridad de un estilo totalmente distinto. Ambas le dieron un lugar dentro del jazz, pero mientras que Alice lo incluyo dentro de las sendas del free que impulsaba su esposo, Dorothy tenía otra concepción mucho más asimilable y popular. Su carrera profesional fue, en mayor medida como músico de sesión para gentes como Freddie Hubbard, Billy Preston y en The Songs Of The Key Of Life de Stevie Wonder.
Pero en los 60, cuando ya estaba casada con el baterista John Ashby, y al ser proclamada por la revista Downbeat como uno de los mejores talentos de la escena de la época, hizo que impulsase más si cabe su carrera como líder iniciada a finales de la década de los 50. De esta forma, y ya en los 60, grabo de forma más o menos continua una serie de discos de los cuales me atrevo a recomendar este Afro-Harping.
Afro-Harping es un disco instrumental, donde aparte de la tarea de Ashby hay que destacar la gran producción de Richad Evans (colaborador de Sun Ra, descubridor de Donny Hathaway y productor de entre otros, de Young-Holt Unlimited y Leroy Hutson) encargado también de unos mas que acertados arreglos orquestales), que le da un toque realmente fantástico, por no hablar de la sonoridad que Ashby le saca a su instrumento. Las canciones se oyen en un plas y que hace que siempre siempre siempre me lo vuelva a poner a la menos otra vez.
Para mí, una autentica joya editada en 1968. Plato exquisito.
Después de este disco, siguió colaborando con Evans en un par de discos más que estoy descubriendo estos días y que, por ahora, no digo nada.
Por cierto, algún día se tendrá que hacer justicia popular sobre el sello Cadet. En esos tiempos editaba unas cosas realmente estupendas.1.Soul Vibrations
