Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba - 'I Speak Fula' 2010.
Malian maestro Bassekou Kouyate is a virtuoso picker and musical visionary whose work blurs the lines between West African and American roots music. Bassekou’s instrument, the ngoni, is a “spike lute” and an ancestor of the banjo, sharing its taut-skinned drum body, percussive attack, and varied picking techniques. Since 2005, Bassekou has led Ngoni Ba, the first-ever group built around not one but four ngonis—all played by members of his family.
Bassekou’s longtime friend and booster Lucy Duran (a BBC radio host, record producer, and Mande music scholar) produced the band’s debut, Segu Blue. Before long, Bassekou and Ngoni Ba were touring Europe and in high demand. I Speak Fula builds on the success of Segu Blue. Its 11 tracks provide a star-studded tour of pan-Malian music, including collaborations with Toumani Diabaté, griot vocal legend Kasse Mady Diabaté, master of the horse-hair soku fiddle Zoumana Tereta, and guitar phenomenon Vieux Farka Toure, Ali’s precociously talented son. The release of I Speak Fula and Ngoni Ba’s first U.S. tour mark the latest leg of an extraordinary musical journey.
I Speak Fula is the first release on Next Ambiance, a new label founded by Jon Kertzer host of KEXP’s Best Ambiance Radio show and Sub Pop co-founder Jon Poneman, and the newest addition to the Sub Pop family. Next Ambiance continues the musical exploration of Best Ambiance, with an emphasis on mind-blowing and life-changing artists with no particular regional or cultural bias.

Nueva entrega de Numero Group, esta vez con libro de fotografías de los night clubs de Chicago en los 70. La edición es increíble y la música, aún más. Blues funkeado, R&B, deep soul, etc.

Vaya mierda de día con lo de la muerte de TEDDY PENDERGRASS y YABBY YOU. De Teddy solo decir que fue una auténtica pena que, al final, no explotase tal como parecía que tenía que ser, sobre todo cuando dejó a HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES. Tenía voz, carisma y presencia suficientes para convertirse en un nuevo Marvín Gaye o un Sam Cooke en cuanto a tirón popular, sobre todo femenino. Pero al final no se qué pasó que muy poco de esto se cumplió, al menos a nivel internacional.
En fin…lo mejor será pasar los malos tragos con un poco de música

Me pillé este disco conociendo muy poco a esta mujer, aunque con leer las notas del cd hizo que me la jugase y, tengo que decir que la jugada me ha salido muy bien y, además, la cosa mejora en cada escucha. La verdad es que la pobre, a pesar de un innegable talento y facultades, nunca tuvo un hit para poder asomarse a las listas (salvo con "TO THE OTHER WOMAN" de 1970 grabado para Canyon Records), pero lo que grabó tiene la suficiente calidad para poder ser tomada en consideración dentro de ese amplio mundo del soul independiente o minoritario.
En 1975, se marcha a Londres (donde la legión de soul frikis británicos la adoraban) y, bajo el ala del sello Contempo, graba este disco, con el que cuenta con los arreglos de Gerry Shury, a Ultrafunk como grupo de apoyo y a The Armada Orchestra para los pasajes de cuerda y demás orquestaciones al uso. El repertorio lo abre una GRAN versión del GRAN tema "WOMAN OF THE GHETTO" de la GRAN (valga de rebuznancia) MARLENA SHAW y unos cuantos temazos deep soul, incluido una versión del "LOVE IS HERE AND NOW YOU'RE GONE" que popularizaron THE SUPREMES, aunque aquí el tema deja su aura Motown para convertirse en una baladón.
Total, disco corto, pero muuuuuuuuuy jugoso.
Y…si....trataré de no ser tan perro y poner más cosas.

Pues estaba yo esta mañana escuchando un disco-recopilatorio de los originales versionados por mis queridos Cobras que encontré por uno de esos blogs del mundo, y me sorprende que tres de sus mejores temazos vengan signados por The 5 Royales (enorme el saxo que le endiñan a los temas), así que he estado buscando alguna compilación del susodicho quintento, y el resultado es:

Por otro lado, recomendar uno que puso 30" en su momento y pude repasar la semana pasada: Keletigui et ses Tambourinis, con curiosa historia que se explicó por encima en el Buscant Jeff Mangum de ayer.
Y mientras escribo esto, mixtape al zurrón. Esto del intenné es a veces perversión máxima.

Strut's Afrostrut label has slowly been uncovering a mine of Afro funk gold from the dusty vaults of Lagos, Nigeria. Some of the music has never been heard outside of Africa, some has never been heard at all, recorded but never released. Such is the case with Peter King's lost album, Shango. The album is a lost classic with hard Afro-funk dancefloor bombs sitting alongside more reflective, downtempo ghetto psychedelia. The lyrics are hard-hitting, borrowing the 'no sell out' messages of black power USA and the musicianship on the album is incredible - great players all locked into layers of rough Afro percussion. Simply an essential album for any Afrobeat or funk fan! Remastered. 2002.
