He's one of the true legends of Afrobeat music. Kologbo olayed on 37 albums with Fela Kuti and the Africa 70. He's carrying on the tradition with 10 songs recorded with the Afrobeat Academy
Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was a well known highlife musician. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela’s personal assistant and ‘tape recorder’. That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fosse, among others.

In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin’s heaviest afrobeat ensemble.

A documentary film has been made about the Kashmere Stage Band and their legendary band leader Conrad “Prof” Johnson. The film Thunder Soul is directed by Mark Landsman, and will premiere at SXSW in Austin TX, March 13.

Thunder Soul follows the extraordinary reunion of alumni from Houston’s storied Kashmere High School Stage Band, who return to their school for the first time in 35 years to pay tribute to their beloved leader - the 92 year-old “Prof” - who transformed the school’s mediocre jazz band into a world-class funk powerhouse in the late 60s and early 70s. Conrad Johnson passed away in 2008, only a few days after this reunion.

Mr. Landsman will be present at the premiere of Thunder Soul along with 30 original members of KSB who are featured in the film. After the film’s March 15 showing, The Kashmere Stage Band will perform at the Austin Chronicle Film Party.

Esto es una promo copy con la voz de Mulatu en todas las canciones. "This is Mulatu Astatke ans you are listening to my new album Mulatu steps ahead". Si alguien se tropieza con algo decente que lo diga.

Por lo demás, un album muy digno pero sin sangre. Mucho lounge y jazz, digamos, convencional aunque de todas maneras está de puts.

Vengo a dejarles el primer disco de Vivian Reed, una soul sister del copón, aunque parece que no fue muy prolífica y se acabó dedicanco al musical.

Incluye versión bastante digna de la CANCIÓN 'You've lost that loving feeling' (aunque mejor no comparar con original, la verdad) y ese pepinarro que es "The shape of things to come".

El .rar lleva añadidas algunas bonus tracks como las versiones de God bless the child o Tired of being alone, gentileza de un señor que tiene un blog y que ahora no recuerdo ni encuentro cuál era, lo siento.

V.A. - EVEN MO' MOD JAZZ

Ahora mismo como que no tengo mucho tiempo para escribir, pero realmente este disco es de los que cualquier palabra sobra. Tengo, por ahora, tres discos de esta colección y los tres son imprescindibles. Poco a poco iremos pillando el resto. Pero este tiene un no sé qué que no se yo que lo hace imparable Hay una buena variedad: crooners y jazzman haciendo versiones soul (the great Jackie y Fitzgerald se salen), bluesman rompiendo la pana (ese Bobby Band y el tema de Frank Frost es cojonudo), jazzmen haciendo groove y modern jazz y, una debilidad personal, los crooners haciendo virguerías con lo que yo llamo “mob pop” o pop mafioso, ya saben: personal fijo en los casinos con amigos no muy recomendables y todo eso (el tema de Andy Williams es de traca traca traca)

No sé, pero a mí este disco me vuelve loco. Así que lo mejor será que las chicas se pongan ese vestido rojo ceñido y con escote generoso, y los chicos ese traje entallado y con corbata delgada y empiecen a chascar el pulgar y el anular. VIVA LAS VEGAS…..!!!!!!!

Getatchew Mekuria is the most revered veteran of the Ethiopian saxophone. In his seventies, he is still in full voice, with his own, powerfully distinctive style of playing. His huge vibrato, both forceful and fragile, plays around the vocal lines, using typical Ethiopian embellishments. He is the inventor of a musical style called the Shellele, which originates from a heroic war-chant, translated to the saxophone. When he plays it, he dons a lion's mane and cuts loose with furious solos that are a kind of free jazz, from before free jazz existed.
The Ex, often descibed as an avant-ethno-improv-punk band, toured Ethiopia twice and fell in love with its music. The Ex had their 25th year anniversary party in 2004 and they invited Getatchew to perform there with the ICP, the Instant Composers Pool, Holland's most amazing free-improvising jazz group. It was his first time traveling outside of Ethiopia but he accepted the ICP as if they were his own band, donned his lion's mane and blasted everyone off stage. He suggested to The Ex he should record his next CD with them. The result is unique; Getatchew's Ethiopian melodies and solos mesh with The Ex's rhythms, noise and vocals, supported by a guest horn section, like they were made for each other.

A killer combination of sounds – the searing tenor sax of Getatchew Mekuria and the raspy guitars of The Ex -- brought together here in really unique cross-cultural formation! Mekuria's influence really transforms the sound of The Ex -- bringing their anarchic spirit into a strongly Ethiopian mode -- one that's further underscored by some great guest horn work on clarinet, alto, and trombone -- used like the kind of horn sections you'd find on Ethiopian recordings from the 70s -- which lets Mekuria really do his thing by soloing over the tunes with a great deal of feeling. There's a bit of vocals on the record from GW Sok, but the main vibe is instrumental -- and titles include "Ethiopia Hagere", "Sethed Seketlat", "Musicawi Silt", "Tezeta", "Almaz Yeharewa", "Che Belew

Few musicians blend pop and jazz as gracefully as 78-year-old Ernest Ranglin. His smash 1996 release Below the Bass line and follow-up Memories of Barber Mack effectively mixed jazz with reggae. On his last release In Search of the Lost Riddim (1998), the Jamaican guitar virtuoso extended his jazz-reggae recipe to include pop music from Senegal and vocals by Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal.

Modern Answers to Old Problems is similar to its immediate predecessor, but this time the focus is on jazz, reggae and Nigerian popular styles. Modern Answers offers steamy polyrhythms, raging grooves, buoyant melodies and clever improvisations. It's a terrific cross-cultural jazz release, and an irresistible listen.

A pioneer of both ska and reggae and an expert jazz guitarist to boot, Ernest Ranglin has played with Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Sonny Rollins, Patti Page and Monty Alexander, to name a few. Marley once tried to hire Ranglin as his full-time guitar teacher and musical director, but the guitarist declined. Ranglin remains an understated guitarist with a keen sense of rhythm, and these days he is exploring the West African roots of Jamaican music.

He teams here with master rhythmist Tony Allen, the drummer who propelled Fela Kuti's classic Afro-funk in the 1970s. Drums stand at the forefront of the mix, a production gimmick that might annoy if a lesser musician were involved. But Allen is such a clever skinsman, his cranked-up drumming actually elevates Ranglin's music. Saxmen Denys Baptiste and Courtney Pine act as free-ranging foils for Ranglin's guitar work. And reggae singer Sylvia Tella (Steel Pulse) dazzles with her sultry, elastic singing on about half these songs. Tella wraps her multilingual voice around the syncopations generated by Ranglin, Allen and five London-based musicians, all of whom have Nigerian roots.

Modern Answers is funky, intricate, and it delivers one fiery solo after another. Highlights among the 10 original tracks include a lilting Afro-reggae piece called "Many Roots" and a danceable confection titled "Sound Invasion." Also noteworthy is "Inflight," an upbeat Latin-influenced composition featuring a lighting-quick solo by Ranglin, some far-out blowing by Pine, and Joe Bashorun's propulsive organ.

As Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander recently observed, Ernest Ranglin doesn't play reggae, jazz or blues - he plays all of them at once. There's a tropical accent to this album that's both languorous and lyrical. Modern Answers is as infectious as Fela Kuti's best material, and that's high praise.

For instance, he played on the Stanley Cowell's album entitled "Regeneration" on "Strata-East" in 1976.
In 1980, he recorded this fantastic afro-beat album with many great jazz musicians.

A collection of this nature can only exist in hindsight. “Gospel Funk” is a genre in the same way that deep soul or acid folk are, created by collectors and enthusiasts as a way to define a subsection of another genre. There aren't any labels, artists, or producers that focused strictly on funky gospel music; rather, there were a couple hundred groups that had a funkier number in their repertoire. The Numero Group has spent the last year scouring LPs and 45s for tracks that fit this bill, and have collected 18 standouts from this newly minted genre. The album is a mix of primitive choirs, spacious breaks, congas, elderly rappers impersonating the devil, cast recordings, thumping bass, and JB impressionists, all with a heavy slathering of gospel gravy.
