  • kandodo / kandodo (thrill jockey, 2012)

    @3w0fh8cj:

    kandodo is the solo project of Simon Price, singer/guitarist of The Heads. Price was raised in Zambia and Malawi, which left an indelible mark on him personally, and is manifest in the song titles, artwork, and name of the project. The influence is less obvious on his instrumental music, but Simon says that if there were lyrics, they'd be about animist religions, hyenas, sharks and dusty drives. Named after a Malawian supermarket that he used to shop in back in the late '80's, the debut self-titled album contains mini-sonic soundscapes that start firmly grounded and then go off into the deepest reaches of space. Along the way, Simon touches on influences as diverse as Kraftwerk, Neu!, Eno, Morricone, Stooges, Loop, and Spacemen 3.

    kandodo is for Price an exploration of tones, chords, and textures that evoke a very particular emotional response, a sense of yearning. These instrumental pieces are lyrical and evocative soundtracks with an elongated and elegant song structure. Describing them himself as "fuzzy lullabies", Simon’s pieces undulate as delicate layers are built and removed, easing the listener along a thread of melodies. This is immersive music meant to be listened to at a loud volume or in the space between headphones.

    All of the tracks on kandodo were played, recorded, and mixed by Simon over a lengthy period of time on an old second-hand Mac Book at home. Being one of the first solo recordings he's ever done, the time alone and the lack of other bandmates allowed Simon to indulge in an infinite amount of possibilities. Many revisions were made over time but the tools used were actually quite few: just his guitars (though Simon is a Fender fetishist, a '65 Magnatone Typhoon was mainly used on this album), a couple of keyboards, tambourine, drum pedal, and a slowly breaking Walkman recorder (for field recordings). The end result is a remarkable addition to the guitarist's already impressive body of work.

    extra life / dream seeds (northern spy, 2012)

    @3w0fh8cj:

    Extra Life’s first record for Northern Spy, Dream Seeds marks a dramatically new creative direction in the band’s still-young but prolific career. It is perhaps Extra Life’s most clearly-defined concept album : seven songs dealing entirely with the twin themes of dreams and children. In a lyrical left turn away from the morbid sexuality and black humor of Made Flesh, these songs look to the subconscious in search of innocence, morality and meaning. According to principal songwriter and elementary school teacher Charlie Looker, the lyrics began with a consecutive series of harrowing dreams involving children, all interconnected by recurring symbols. Claiming to be in some way spiritually reborn, Looker penned the songs while mining these dreams’ buried pasts and even watching in awe as some of their prophesies unfolded in all-too-real life. Alternately brutal and tender, haunted by ghosts of both the dead and the unborn, the songs of Dream Seeds express the violent yet redemptive collision of the Real and Psychic Worlds and an archaic belief in the divine truth of dreams.

    violens / true (slumberland, 2012)

    @3w0fh8cj:

    Violens' new album, True, finds the Brooklyn three-piece further amplifying their innovative songwriting with a palette of exquisitely crafted sound. The band's music eludes classification, expertly blending percussive guitar work and silky harmonies, seeking the silver lining yet to be discovered between the sounds we know and love. With a wash of 90s sonic pop drawn from artists like Pale Saints, Cocteau Twins and McCarthy, Violens paint soft watercolor notes across their compositions, adding crucial emotional depth via layered vocal harmonies.

    the hive dwellers / hewn from the wilderness (k, 2012)

    @3w0fh8cj:

    The Hive Dwellers new album is the essence of rock'n'roll moved from the garage to the basement to the rec room and then back out into the wild. Calvin Johnson plays guitar and sings his songs in combination with Gabriel Will on assorted stringed instruments and the contributions of several drummers who have made their mark on the Hive Dwellers: Spencer Kelley, Brett Lyman and K.E.Sixx.

    A who’s who of K emerges on Hewn from the Wilderness; for instance, Jeremy Jay throws down the beat on “A Woman Named Trudy” and Karl Blau plays guitar all over the place, bass on "Nothin' but the Buryin'". Contributing musicians include the Vibrarian’s K.E. Sixx, Dub Narcotic Sound System/Chain & the Gang’s Brian Weber, Wallpaper/Basemint’s Spencer Kelley, City Center/Saturday Looks Good to Me’s Fred Thomas; when all the dust has settled, Calvin Johnson, Gabriel Will and Evan Hashi emerge as the musical core of the Hive Dwellers.

    evans the death / evans the death (fortuna pop!/slumberland, 2012)
    @3h7e6by0:

    After anxiously mounting anticipation, Evans the Death release their self-titled debut album. Filled with twelve blistering tracks they weave a distinctive magic, coupling main songwriter Dan Moss' gift for melody with Katherine Whitaker's unique vocal stylings. The songs both document and channel the exuberance of youth via the prism of five pop music obsessives and were recorded late Summer 2011 with producer Ex-Test Icicle and current Warm Brains man Rory Atwell (Veronica Falls, Male Bonding, The Vaccines). Dan describes what the band were aiming for: "We wanted to make the best sounding record that we possibly could as we're bored of bands just settling for a half-arsed sound. There were no real fixed reference points when we made it; we just borrowed stuff from any of the pop music that we've grown up with. I think it's also a very economical album. There's no dilly-dallying around when there should instead be a hook there. We're very proud of it and glad we paid little or no attention to what is currently fashionable in music."
    Named after the undertaker in Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, Evans the Death comprise of Dan Moss (guitar, vocals), Katherine Whitaker (vocals, keys), Olly Moss (guitar), Rob Mitson (drums) and newest member Lan McCardle (bass) – original guitarist Matt Gill having left the band following the completion of the album. Attuned as much to the lyrical dexterity of Morrissey, Lawrence Felt, Edwyn Collins, and Jarvis Cocker, as to the scuzzed up melodic exuberance of early My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, The Pixies, and the I Am Kurious Oranj era of The Fall, the band effortlessly blend precocious musical literacy with the kind of unerring self-awareness which makes for a perfectly pitched pop sensibility.
