V.A. - intensities ((re)re)visitada
El disco incluye temas de Pangea, coeval, xedh, daax!, scmute, clemens hausch, noish, Zanoisect, nanako y electrofuzza y ha sido editado por el netlabel TecnoNucleo, incluyendo la selección de los músicos participantes. Todos los temas han sido elaborados a partir de las grabaciones realizadas por los visitantes a la exposición de Mataró "Intensities. Inconformisme, incorrecció i rebel·lió entre art i escena musical", durante su paso por un taller propuesto por LaFundició como parte del servicio educativo y en el que participaron la Escola FRETA, la Fundació Maresme y el CEE Les Aigües.
Durante el taller los visitantes a la exposición tuvieron ocasión de distorsionar y manipular con un sencillo equipo técnico los sonidos generados durante su propia visita a la exposición. El resultado de esos talleres puede escucharse en el Myspace de Intensities Records y es el material sonoro con el que exclusivamente han trabajado todos los músicos para crear sus cortes.

Músico experimental nacido en Méjico y afincado en Birmingham, Luque presenta tres temas: "Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll was never meant to be like this", "Frío" y "ssst". Un poco de tralla en inglés:
The sounds of "'Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n Roll' was never meant to be like this", were created using an extension of Iannis Xenakis' dynamic stochastic synthesis technique that Luque is currently developing. Stochastic sytnthesis is an approach to microsound synthesis that uses probability distributions to manipulate individual digital samples. The structure of this piece is articulated by juxtaposing three different families of sounds (in order to create sections). These clear and abrupt cuts between materials were done intuitively; some of them happen between similar sounds: to give the false impression of movement; the rest of the cuts occur between very contrasting sounds: unexpected changes that try to affect the listener's perception of reality.
"frío" was composed using stochastic processes and is a musical expression of the polysemic meaning of this word: low-temperature bodies, indifference, the chilling effects of cold colors, among other meanings. Phil Thomson, from the now defunct Centibel netlabel, defined this work as "a synthetic meditation on timbre and stasis".
"ssst" was created by the opposition of two principles applied to the sense of energy and activity, these principles are: retaining and releasing. When retaining, the character of the piece is quiet and with individual gestures; when releasing, the energy is freed and mass movements arise. Thomson said about this piece: "a digital clamour, conjuring images of a virtual ensemble performing in an slowly exploding concert hall haunted by microsonic ghosts".

Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (Type, 2008)

Welcome back Type! The lauded alt imprint jogs gainly back to life, shrugging off the anchors of its New Year slowdown like Forrest Gump's disintegrating leg-braces. And talk about hitting the ground running: the latest from the label has all the timeless traits that's earned them such positive fervour in the past, rich in the blurred beauty that adorns ninety percent of their backlog.
Here, we find Portland's Liz Harris on fine form as she coos out her third LP as Grouper, presumably having drank from the same spring that carried neighbour and labelmate Peter Broderick across the pond earlier this month. Her mini-opus 'Dragging A Dead Deer…' trickles from the speakers like a kind of one-woman Akron/Family, conjuring an alien spectrum where guitars and drones are just two points on the same trend.
An old Type chestnut, you may say, but if ain't broke, why fiddle? On 'When We Fall' she shows precisely why not as she crafts a modern Country & Western requiem, all tear-stained tumbleweeds and buzzards circling the cowboy carcass, while 'A Cover Over' strums along like a more pubic version of Supergrass' 'Time To Go', with Harris providing the kind of tranquilised yodeling you could pour into a crevasse. If the female singer-songwriter tag hovering round the sleeve spells peril to the curious superficial, then it only takes a dip to realise our heroine here is a lot more adventurous than the chirpy froth Richard Curtis uses to lacquer his screenplays. This here's the stuff of dreams - vertigo and pillow-drool included.
Harris' cloudy formula holds up for most of the record's twelve tracks, ad despite the fact it's not a CD you're likely to roster into your in-car shuffler, that doesn't mean it's not worth slowing down for. Between the forty-six minutes is the space to fall asleep forever, with the temptation to count sheep only countermanded by an insistent sense of unrest that's woven into the compositions. On 'Disengaged', scarred piano patterns wobble out of an atomic pile, Harris' voice expanding in divine soprano, and 'Fishing Bird (Empty Jutted In The Evening Breeze)' seems almost topically clairvoyant given the thing that flew to Yakushima this week.
It's on the wafer-thin 'Invisible', though, that things really come to a head. A track that the touched have been thirsting after for a year now, it's a cerebral meditation that marks the peak of Harris' ambient choir. Guitars slosh at low tide while her snow-brittle voice provides just a scattering of light on the water, enough to find your way home. Truly a cracker. All in all, 'Dragging A Dead Deer...' excels in the peculiar nook it transmits from, were acoustic ruins dissolve to form a melodic, murky insomnia, and choppy-but-fragile production forces you to either submit or go back to your speed-metal.
There's something here to cherish for anyone who can appreciate the lighter side of ambient pondering: backing tapes that flicker like firelight, guitars as gentle as tinder. Grouper can do woozy like Craig Clevenger can write it.

Estoy en ello aún, de momento lo que ya se sabía. Ya había podido oir 6 temas. La voz mucho más clara, menos escondida bajo capas de ruido. Utilizada de un modo más convencional (también la música) y, a diferencia de a Jessica Bailiff a la que veo más cómoda e interesante con el ruido, le sienta perfecto porque aquí hay unos temazos tremendos. Estoy enganchado a Invisble y a Heavy Water desde hace semanas.
Un disco perfecto para introducirse en su mundo, mucho más accesible que cualquiera de los anteriores aunque manteniendo por completo su esencia.
La putada es que habrá que esperar por el vinilo
