Pumice - Quo (Soft Abuse, 2008)

Pumice's reputation continues to grow with each new release and Quo is another step forward, at once a classically ramshackle lo-fi psych treat and something which reenergizes that form into something new. Stefan Neville's one-man-band abilities are the key – the stop-start tempo shifts on the opening almost-title track, "Pumicequo," sound like they could be the smooth shiftings of a full act onstage, and if that effect is easier than ever to create, the point is that Neville's songwriting is the core, with melodies both catchy and wonderfully strange. The choppy flow of Quo works to its advantage -- everything feels like an assembled artifact, and the self-consciousness of the approach is handled well in Neville's hands, from what sounds like a clunky edit on the rough chug of "Fort" to the deep echoes and what could be marimba on the amusingly titled "Heavy Punter," which if it's not about a show attendee is still a fun image nonetheless. The stylistic twists on the album further fit into both Pumice's general aesthetic and that larger one it follows, from the demi-shanty of "World With Worms" to the balladish "Dogwater" and the acoustic but not serene sounding "Sick Bay Duvet." The latter tracks show how Neville could play it 'straight' in an indie-rock universe that tends to value brash clarity (or at least did at the time of the album's release), but even then there's a sense of distance in Neville's vocals, something which instrumentals, like the lovely closer "Beak Remedy," help to emphasize further, that Pumice is, just a little, not quite of this earth.

joé, pues de las cuatro propuestas, para mí, sin duda, la mejor antelope. las otras tres tampoco me vuelven loco, pero sitúo antes a supersystem y a el guapo que a shy child

2 el guapo

pero dónde vas, si supersystem eran una fulañaza de aupa! dos euros que me costó el disco y lo acabé encontrando caro.
el guapo me parecía un grupo tolerable y antelope están bastante bien, aunque creo que no los escucharé dentro de tres años ni de coña.

chema s, el disco que está de puta madre es el de expansion x, no sé si lo pusiste tú. el batería este chris corsano se sale, vaya machine.

supersystem me parecen tela de honestos y, sobre todo, efectivos. mejores que patatas como radio 4 a las que se les dió muchísima más cancha. el último disco me gustó menos, pero 'always never again' tiene verdaderos himnos. a las 6 de la mañana en fun club cambiaba lo que estuviesen poniendo por cualquier tema de ese disco. son muy catetos, vale, pero sudan la camiseta.

y manel, si te ha gustado el de dimension x, yo te aconsejaría probar con el de offonoff. es del mismo palo, misma fecha y con el mismo bajista. a mí me mola más, porque es más punky. me cito para más info.

offonoff son terry ex (the ex) a la guitarra, massimo pupillo (zu, original silence, ardecore…) al bajo y el batería noruego Paal Nilssen-Love (atomic, the thing, original silence y mil millones de proyectos) improvisando ruidazo cafre. jazz-core del que hace pupa. un lujazo.

A ver si me echáis una mano, que me estoy volviendo loco. Estoy intentando buscar las grabaciones de los tres espectáculos de Stephin Merritt, The Orphan Of Zhao, Peach Blossom Fan, y My Life As A Fairytale. Que quede claro que lo que quiero no es el Showtunes, sino las tres grabaciones, que hasta donde sé, se distribuyeron en itunes.

Back in 2001, just after the breakup of At The Drive-In, Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and his late friend Jeremy Michael Ward (Mars Volta “sound manipulator” and member of De Facto) recorded an album together, a minimal affair with nods to composer Steve Reich and the household sound manipulations of Matmos. That album, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Jeremy Michael Ward (or ORL+JMW) was released in an edition of 200 minidiscs (!) and given out to friends.

Seven years later, ORL+JMW will finally be widely available on CD and LP. Infrasonic Sound reissues the album on June 10.

Taiga Remains is Alex Cobb who is also the man behind the Students of Decay Label in America. Descend from Ivory Cliffs is a almost 23 min drone-epic that mixes some of the most beautiful melodies that your ear has ever listened to. But Cobb does not just rely on this abilities to create warm and cozy soundscapes. During the track it appears that Cobb is also a fan of softer noise. Imagine yourself in front of this huge cliff, as you slowly crawl over the edge. Your blinded by the bright sunlight that hurts your eyes in some kind of a positive way and immediately tears of joy run down your check. This is what makes "Descend from Ivory Cliffs" to one of the most breathtaking moments in drone history.
