Nearly three decades after its release, Cut, the 1979 record from pioneering female punk band the Slits, is finally available on CD in the States. The reissue just may usher in a revival, as new material by a re-formed Slits, a series of "lost" recordings and the solo debut from singer Ari Up are all set for spring.

El disco de Ari-Up lleva meses pululando por internet. Se llama "Dread More Dan Dead" (Dan, tal cual). Eso de "re-formed Slits" suena un poco feo, ¿no?

    ¡Vuelve Golden Smog!

Golden Smog In 'Fine' Form On New Album

Lost Highway has set July 18 as the release date for "Another Fine Day," the first release in eight years from Golden Smog. The lauded supergroup features Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy, Big Star's Jody Stephens and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, Marc Perlman and Kraig Johnson.

Again sporting separate songwriting contributions from Tweedy, Louris, Perlman, Murphy and Johnson, the band's fourth album is composed of 14 originals and a cover of the Kinks' Dave Davies' "Strangers," sung by Louris and Tweedy.

The first Golden Smog album to follow both Wilco's ascension to "it"-band status and reports of a Jayhawks break-up, "Another Fine Day" was recorded last year in two separate sessions, the first sans Tweedy and Stephens in the south of Spain, the second with the full band in Minneapolis.

The songs from the first session, captured in Puerto De Santa Maria, feature Linda Pitmon (Steve Wynn, Zuzu's Petals) on drums, and vocals from Muni Loco, wife of Paco Loco, who co-produced the disc with Ed Ackerson (Mason Jennings, the Jayhawks) and the band.

"Another Fine Day" began to take shape when bassist Perlman was asked to write a song for a Guy Ritchie-directed Corvette commercial. While the song was never used in the ad, the core band of Perlman, Louris, Murphy and Johnson got together and began writing the first half of the record. "It was four guys mumbling into a microphone for a few sessions and going, 'Oh, this could be a song,'" says Louris.

    Click to learn more…
On the band's previous, Ryko-released discs, the songwriter who wrote a particular song usually sang it. But perhaps due to how "Another Fine Day" was born, it sounds like more of a band effort, and less easily divisible by songwriter/singer.

Yet there are definite specific songwriter vehicles, like Murphy's "Hurricane," which while slightly twangy is driven by his trademark, revved-up Soul Asylum riffing. The harmonica-punctuated, piano-dusted "Gone" is pure Louris. Meanwhile, "Corvette," the song that started it all, is vintage power pop, and Louris and Tweedy's "Listen Joe," is a sparse, acoustic song for a long-gone friend.

Debuting with a covers EP in 1992, the occasional band has at different points also featured Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner, ex-Replacements drummer Chris Mars, Noah Levy of the Honeydogs and violinist Jessy Greene of the Geraldine Fibbers. Although Golden Smog had been virtually dormant since wrapping a tour behind 1998's "Weird Tales," last year, Louris, Perlman, Murphy and Johnson played a handful of Golden Smog dates sans Tweedy.

Here is the track listing for "Another Fine Day":

    "You Make It Easy"
    "Another Fine Day"
    "5-22-02"
    "Long Time Ago"
    "Corvette"
    "Beautiful Mind"
    "Listen Joe"
    "Cure For This"
    "Hurricane"
    "Strangers"
    "Frying Pan Eyes"
    "Gone"
    "Never Felt Before"
    "I Can"
    "Think About Yourself"

  • Contento, ¿eh? Ya podrían haberlos traido, ya…

  • ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell's official web site administrator, who goes by the name of "ceojc", has confirmed that the band will be reuniting for an appearance at the Nova Rock festival in Austria in mid-June, with "a lot more" concert dates yet to be announced.

"I hate to keep on saying this, but as most of you have heard, ALICE will be performing at Nova Rock in Austria," "ceojc" writes on Cantrell's official message board. "This is true. ALICE is back.

"Europe is a long way to go for just one show, so I feel that we are going to have a lot more to do.

"Because this is Europe and a big festival, don't count on any special ALICE tickets but you never know what the future brings.

"Let me explain why things went down the way they went down. It was not the way we wanted it to happen. The festival promoter secured a bunch of really big bands like METALLICA, GUNS N' ROSES and ALICE. The promoter decided to have a big press conference on Monday [Feb. 20]. We had not finished securing the 'business side' of the show by the time Monday rolled around. Because Monday was President's Day, our office was closed and we could not make a decission regarding releasing the info to you guys. Our European agent, because our office was closed, made an executive decision to release the show info. We fully support his choice but could not say anything untill we spoke to him to get the full stroy and due to the time difference and travel we could not make the announcement untill just now.

"Guys, please remember that nothing is official unless it comes from our office. We like to surprise you but sometimes that is not always possible.

"Jerry, Mike [Inez, bass], Sean [Kinney, drums] and the managment team are doing our best to keep you guys informed. You mean a lot to the guys and they want you to know that."

ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley died on April 5, 2002 from a mixture of heroin and cocaine. Staley was found dead two weeks later, surrounded by intravenous drug paraphernalia in his Seattle apartment. The death certificate reads Staley's death resulted from "an acute intoxication due to the combined effects of opiate (heroin) and cocaine." The death was classified as "accidental."

As previously reported, COMES WITH THE FALL vocalist/guitarist and member of Jerry Cantrell's touring band William DuVall has been tapped to sing lead vocals with ALICE IN CHAINS at the taping of an episode of VH1 Classic's "Decades Rock Live!", a tribute to HEART that will take place March 10 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It is not presently clear if DuVall will be joining the group on any of the other dates that are currently being scheduled.

"Pantera/Coe Album Unearthed For May Release."

...After the tragic on-stage murder of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott in December 2004, few were aware that three of the four members of Pantera had a full album in the vaults.

On May 2, Dimebag's brother and Pantera/Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott will inaugurate his independent Big Vin Records with the release of "Rebel Meets Rebel." The album pairs the Abbott brothers and Pantera bassist Rex Brown with country music outlaw David Allen Coe.

"Some of the songs are about gambling, some of them are about broken hearts and some are about drinking," Abbott tells Billboard.com. "There's stuff on there that's balls-out metal, and there's stuff that's country. There's even a flamenco guitar song."

Pantera regularly took to the stage while Coe's "Jack Daniels If You Please" played in the background. Dimebag met Coe after one of his shows and gave him some Pantera merchandise after the set. Thus began a friendship.

"The next time Coe was in town he brought the tour bus to Dime's house and we all got loaded," Abbott says. "The next morning we were in the studio recording a record."

Abbott says that he and his brother had hoped to release the album after recording a second Damageplan record. After the breakup of Pantera and the launch of Damageplan, Abbott says the two feared fans would be confused by another project.

Also on May 2, Big Vin will release "Dimevision Vol. 1," a DVD that collects behind-the-scenes footage of Dimebag. Abbott dismisses those who think he may be cashing in on his brother's legacy. "If the roles were reversed and I was gone, I would want him to be as gung-ho about this as I am," he says. "Anyone who says I'm cashing in can kiss my ass. Nobody knows the pain I've been through."
