  • broadcast / berberian sound studio: original soundtrack (warp, 2013)

    @z58tm29j:

    The Broadcast soundtrack to Peter Strickland’s award-winning ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ has finally been given a release via Warp and credited to both James Cargill and the much missed Trish Keenan. Working closely with the film’s supervising sound editor, Joakim Sundstrom, James Cargill started work on the material with Trish prior to her untimely passing in 2011, realising some of the uneasiest, phantasmagoric themes and atmospheres in their immaculate oeuvre. In so many ways it’s the perfect vehicle for Broadcast to explore their nefarious influences and interests intersecting Italian horror films and the pioneering sonics of Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai. Working to a complex, inception-like meta-narrative revolving about a “British sound recordist’s slowly degenerating mental state while working in an Italian film studio”, they weave original foley and dialogue from its eccentric, sinister characters into 39 kaleidoscopic cues and themed fragments, patching eerie harpsichord waltzes next to lysergic organ vamps, spine-creeping Moog atmospheres, miasmic chorales and blood-curdling screams, all with a drifting, trans-dimensional quality and that dusty sort of articulation unique to Broadcast’s anachronistic oeuvre. It plays like a library record, but there are flashes of classic Broadcast that shine through, from the “Work And Non Work” era romanticism of “The Equestrian Vortex” to the gorgeous skittering “The Sacred Marriage” – resulting in a record that not only fulfils it’s brief, but which also offers a tantalising glimpse at what might have been.

    @z58tm29j:

    Fiercely contemporary yet rich with classic influences, Mount Moriah’s Miracle Temple sports bigger arrangements, louder guitars, bolder vocals, and more soulful rhythms than their acclaimed self-titled debut.
    Through their artful personal storytelling, the band develops a piercing portrait of a “New South” where progressive traditions are still fitfully breaking free from conservative ones.

    Smash the Hegemony of Dance. Stand still. Pere Ubu return with their first new studio album for over three years in January 2013, the thirty-fifth anniversary of the group's debut (The Modern Dance). Lady From Shanghai is to be released on new label Fire Records (home to Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma, Giant Sand, Bailterspace, Josephine Foster and many others). The album ushers in a new era in the history of Pere Ubu, with David Thomas and band continuing to provoke and shock listeners, further establishing them as one of the most innovative, progressive and important bands of all time.
    Lady from Shanghai is an album of dance music - it is the Ubu Dance Party.
    "The dancer is the puppet of the dance," says singer David Thomas. "It's long past time somebody puts an end to this abomination. Lady From Shanghai has fixed the problem.

  • Night Beds – Country Sleep (2013)

    @d15qbgc7:

    Released early next year on Dead Oceans (home to Bill Fay, Phosphorescent and Tallest Man on Earth), Country Sleep is classic Americana with pedal steel and strings, somehow sparse yet lush, light orchestration used to highlight the protagonist's (Yellen's?) feelings of isolation and torment. It's a little bit rustic, a little bit symphonic, not remotely chillwave, even if waves of chill regularly make up the atmosphere in the songs. On a track called Cherry Blossoms, Yellen sings of feeling a "cold wind blowing" through his window, worsening his already bad moon. "I can't take this no more," he sings, nearing the end of his tether. "In my mirror I watch myself cry." The album is steeped in wintry desolation – on the sleeve he can be seen rubbing his hands together and smoking to keep warm, hunched against a windy backdrop. Fans of Fleet Foxes and My Morning Jacket at their dreamiest will be in heaven.

    @2rau3s44:

    Across his many projects past and present, it’s under the moniker of L. Pierre that Aidan Moffat has perhaps best opened up the bare bones of his thirst for sonic exploration. The Island Come True is Moffat’s fourth album as L. Pierre and is a work assembled from the vast cavern of his assembled field recordings and samples, a collage that works as a sonic patchwork of the 39 year-old’s own mind. A popular lyrical raconteur whether as one half of Arab Strap, writing under his own name or when collaborating with Bill Wells - as on last year’s Scottish Album Of The Year award winner Everything’s Getting Older - it’s as this carnation where the true extent of his musical eclecticism is revealed.
    As such, the album is as a dreamscape, with fragments of classical works, drum samples, instructional speeches and, in a link back to his last album, recordings of nature. Electronics elements previously employed on past albums have been discarded, the album in its entirety consisting only of these found sounds.

    @2rau3s44:

    Welcome to the debut album by Mystical Weapons, a wild improvisational duo ride through terra incognita, helmed by multi-instrumentalists Sean Lennon (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger) and Greg Saunier (Deerfhoof). Mystical Weapons is one of those projects that evolved almost of its own accord. A couple of years ago the Plastic Ono Band was playing a show in San Francisco with Deerhoof. The GOASTT was doing a club date the next day, so Sean asked Greg if he’d like to form an ad hoc duo to open the show. Bam. That was it. And it worked so well, they were both hungry for more.

    @2rau3s44:

    isn’t it great to see a young band growing the old fashioned way? three albums into their career, manchester’s dutch uncles, a group who pitched their tents firmly in pop’s leftfield with their eponymous first album before releasing memphis industries debut cadenza in 2011, have made another huge step forward with their forthcoming album out of touch in the wild.
    there’s been no great reinvention, just great progress: this is a refined version of dutch uncles doing what they do best: making labyrinthine pop of escher-like complexity and crystal clarity. unlike previous outings, out of touch in the wild was written and conceived as a full ‘studio’ album, allowing for greater creative freedom, more sophisticated arrangements and a much larger sonic palette, seeing them utilise strings, piano, analogue synths and tuned percussion more so than guitars. the band’s underlying influences remain but this time around see’s kate bush, igor stravinsky, japan, prince and neu! all intriguingly thrown into the mix.

    shugo tokumaru / in focus? (polyvinyl, 2013) *

    ▼ download

    @2rau3s44:

    For the first half of 2012, Shugo Tokumaru locked himself inside his home studio while working on In Focus?, often forgetting to eat and sleep for long stretches of time while crafting the record's 15 songs – each of which contains an average of 20 instruments and hundreds of recorded parts that are meticulously mixed together to create a single, cohesive track.
    As a result of this extreme care and attention to detail, In Focus? -- despite its title -- represents the clearest manifestation of Tokumaru's multifaceted musical vision to date.
    From slow building album opener "Circle"'s perfect transition into standout track "Katachi," to lead single "Decorate" and the beautifully delicate acoustic ballad "Tightrope," it's clear that Tokumaru has again succeeded in writing universal melodies while singing in his native Japanese.

    @2rau3s44:

    Little was said about Parquet Courts' debut effort, American Specialties. Released exclusively on cassette tape, the quasi-album was an odd collection of 4 track recordings that left those who were paying attention wanting more. A year of woodshedding live sets passed before the Courts committed another song to tape. The band's first proper LP, Light Up Gold, is a dynamic and diverse foray into the back alleys of the American DIY underground. Bright guitars swirl serpentine over looping, groovy post-punk bass lines and drums that border on robotic precision. While the initial rawness of the band's early output remains, the songwriting has gracefully evolved. Primary wordsmiths A. Savage and Austin Brown combine for a dynamic lyrical experience, one part an erudite overflow of ideas, the other an exercise in laid-back observation. Lyrically dense, the poetry is in how it flows along with the melody, often times as locked-in as the rhythm section.

    @2rau3s44:

    The Canadian duo, made up of mysterious characters "Agor" and "Raph," have been recording together for a few years. They released an eight-track EP in 2010 on small Montreal label Arbutus, which also put out Grimes' well-received Visions album earlier this year, and the same imprint will be responsible for their full-length as well.
    Untogether is named for the duo's recording process—the album was written separately and then recorded over the course of the year across Canada. It sees the dreamy duo tightening and polishing their sound, heading into more pop-friendly territory. Ra also moonlights in Canadian band Braids, while Agor reportedly spent time in Europe, immersing himself in dance music and electronic production.
