Inspired by the transcendent chime of early Motown, the P.E.I. natives perform their best Beach Boys impression to date, delivering orchestral walls of sound on album openers “Magic” and “Audrey,” as well as George Harrison-inspired jangle on “Faster 4 U” and album closer “O My Love.” Infused with the limber fretwork of North Lakes frontman and newly minted bassist Nathan Gill, the group unleash a collection of propulsive power-pop, with percussionist Derek Ellis’s rampant kick drum driving the band away from its melody-centric past on lead single “Amour Than Amis” and “Ready for a Look.” Parting ways with producer and mentor Joel Plaskett, sound engineer Darryl Neudorf (the Sadies, Blue Rodeo) breathes life into the quartet’s lustful vignettes, creating expansive soundscapes on the open chord, “Kumbaya”-esque “Strangers on the Street” and riff-heavy “Last Star.” Fans of the group may be surprised by the subdued nature of singer Liam Corcoran’s usually prominent acoustic strumming and bubble-gum pop harmonies, but Foolish Blood‘s low-end textures and diverse layers guarantee that the Maritime icons will remain relevant for years to come.

> Steeped in the same breed of dark American pictorial songwriting that made up Van Dyke Parks’ travelogue pop journals and the more tragic moments in the careers of both Wilsons Dennis and Brian, California-based multi-instrumentalist Frank Maston offers up a collection of pleasantly backwards-looking pop on his proper debut full- length, Shadows. From the slapback delay and miscellaneous percussion of instrumental album opener “Strange Rituals,” you know what you’re getting into with this album. Nods to Pet Sounds in production, instrumentation, and even melodies are blatant and unabashed, with the compressed beauty of that album being a clear starting point for much of Shadows. While songs like “Young Hearts” and “Night” are deeply indebted to all eras of the Beach Boys (ranging from All Summer Long to Pacific Ocean Blue), the album takes cues from a greater lineage of California pop. Hyper-compressed walls of sound like “Messages” evoke Phil Spector’s jam-packed mid-’60s productions, while “(You Were) In Love” even calls up some of the playful energy of Harry Nilsson. Split between equal parts hopeful songcraft and ominous undercurrents, Shadows is an apt title for the album. The large percentage of instrumentals creates a lot of negative space for the listener to fill in, and the distant production tucks Mellotrons and blissful horn sections into dimly lit corners, willfully obscuring the tunes in spooky layers of reverb. While jumping off from a Pet Sounds/Song Cycle perspective, the creeping anxiety of Maston’s songs sets them apart from being mere mimicry, and add to the shadowy landscape. Still, the ’60s influence is so heavy indeed that a song like “Judge Alabaster” sounds almost out of place, its pulsing rhythm and reverb-coated vocals having more in common with the 2010s Slumberland roster than the late-’60s Southern California popsike set. Somewhere between an imagined past and a shaky connection to the present, Maston has created a place outside of time. His songs come on like they’re peaceful, with gentle tambourines and throwback organ tones, but inside their shadowy interiors they’re actually so uptight, brimming with a strange darkness that’s both bewitching and unsettling.

Meeting on the hallowed ground where the fierce energy and clatter of punk hook up with the choruses and singalong cheerfulness of pop, the songs are delivered with a breezy sense of humor and fun, but also with a lo-fi power that never lets up. The band switches instruments, trades vocals, and generally comes across as kids having a total blast. Sometimes that leads to indulgent, messy albums but The Late Great Whatever is fairly tight-sounding and its songs never feel tossed off or trashed. Instead, the group’s songwriting is sharp and to the point, with only the occasional meandering musical interlude to break the momentum just a bit. The Pixies’ comparison is pretty vital, because along with the prerequisite loud/quiet dynamics that any band who likes the ’90s even a little is bound to have absorbed, the male vocals have plenty of Black Francis’ off-kilter shoutiness, which is made palatable by the cooing Kim Deal backgrounds Lauren Curtis has down. (Check “Fried Eyes” for an example of them channeling the Pixies and maybe even beating them at their own game.) Her lead vocals are a highlight on the album too; the tenderness she brings to songs like “Rope Swing” and “Hear or Anywhere” is a nice counterpoint to the mad dash to the finish line the other songs represent. She also shows she can rock out just like the fellas on the hard-charging “Maybe I Know.” And rock out they do on 100-mph tracks like “Kessel Run,” “Randall the Savage,” and “Darth Lauren.” No matter how you feel about Pixies worship or Star Wars references, if you have an affinity for loud, fast, but brainy, punky pop that is fun and full of hooky jams that’ll have you bobbing your head like a maniac, The Late Great Whatever is just what you need to make you happy.

pero bajate todo, hombre, ya tendras tiempo de escuchar y desechar lo que no te interese. si no luego te veras abocado a mendigar links caidos cada dos por tres. o te crees que yo me escucho todo antes de colgarlo? me guio por las referencias y/o sellos que editan y que a priori me parecen interesantes. luego muchos discos ahi se quedan, esperando su momento, que a lo mejor nunca llega jaja

Devendra Banhart releases his Nonesuch debut, Mala, on March 12, 2013. The singer/songwriter co-produced the record with his longtime bandmate, guitarist Noah Georgeson.
Mala, Banhart’s eighth studio album, was recorded in his then-home in Los Angeles. (He now resides in New York City.) He and Georgeson played most of the instruments themselves, using borrowed equipment and a recorder they’d found in a pawn shop. The recorder is a couple of decades' old piece of gear “that a lot of early hip-hop had been made on,” says Banhart. “And knowing my songs are not hip-hop whatsoever, we thought it would be interesting to see how these kinds of songs would sound on equipment that was used to record our favorite rap. Let’s see how this technology would work for us.”
