  • the appleseed cast / illumination ritual (graveface, 2013)

    $$$ donate $$$

    @j4ppqm6s:

    A blend of two dubiously-termed styles — post-rock, emo — has been the bread and butter of Kansas-hailing brainiacs The Appleseed Cast since the late ‘90s. If you’ve never heard them, you might be surprised to hear how broadly that blend can be pushed. With each release, they redefine.
    Remaining true to form, Illumination Ritual all but abandons the droning structures and sweeping arrangements of 2009′s Sagarmartha for what hits like a return to the lively, visceral Mare Vitalis with the free-flowing creativity of the Low Level Owl discs in mind. In theory, that should be great. It is. You could get away with calling this album the opposite of their underrated LP Peregrine — if that disc was a sad, scatterbrained golem of eclecticism, Illumination Ritual represents lightness, concision and, especially, unity.

    meat puppets / rat farm (megaforce, 2013)

    @j4ppqm6s:

    The Rat Farm album features the indelible Kirkwood brothers, Cris and Curt. SPIN summed up the hypnotic power by saying, "the interplay of Curt's drowsy vocals and freaky guitar can still induce vertiginous spells." The band also continues with drummer Shandon Sahm, son of the legendary Doug Sahm.
    The highly influential Meat Puppets started as a punk rock band, but established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock. The Meat Puppets later gained significant exposure when the Kirkwood brothers served as guest musicians on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance in 1993. The band's subsequent album Too High to Die went gold, selling over 500,000 albums, and became their most successful release. The band reunited in 2006.
    Everyone from Nirvana to Pavement to Stone Temple Pilots cite The Meat Puppets as one of the most significant American bands.

    dirty beaches - drifters / love is the devil (zoo music, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @j4ppqm6s:

    Hungtai’s latest release, Drifters / Love Is the Devil, is a sprawling double-album that chronicles the musician’s life on the road over the past two years—through the labyrinths of Berlin, Belgrade, Paris, and many other cities; through heartbreak, rebirth and masochistic, existential self-reflection.
    Recorded between Montreal and Berlin in the winter of 2012, the two halves of Drifters / Love Is the Devil are separated only by aesthetics, as they are tightly woven together thematically as one conceptual piece. If 2011’s Badlands was an exercise in exorcising past ghosts in a semi-fictional world, then Drifters / Love Is the Devil is a reflection on the fragility of reality—that of the outside world in which the artist explores the nightlife of bright neon temptations and hedonistic values, and that of the inner world, one of remorse and lovelorn tragedies.

    la femme / psycho tropical berlin (born bad, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @j4ppqm6s:

    La Femme naît à Biarritz à l’aube des années X, quand Sacha et Marlon, munis d’une guitare et de Garageband, entament leurs premières compositions. Ils s’essayent à divers styles, de la chanson française pop des années 60′s / yéyé à la musique surf californienne. Ensemble ils triturent pianos, synthés et planches de surf. Marlon doit alors déménager à Paris, où il rencontre Sam, bassiste. Ils se font les dents avec S.O.S mademoiselle, groupe de rock français à l’ancienne avec Olivier Peynot au chant, tandis qu’à Biarritz, Sacha affute ses riffs de guitare et fait pousser la reverb avec le groupe de surf “Les Redoutables !”.
    Rock et pop, rococo bauhaus, sous influences multiples (Kraftwerk, Elli & Jacno…) La Femme n’a qu’une envie ; vous donner du plaisir. Généreuse et accueillante, elle vous tend sa main blanche ; si vous la saisissez, ce sera peut-être le frisson de votre vie.

    @j4ppqm6s:

    Somewhere in the shadows beneath a consummate sun-drenched pace of life lies hidden occult fantasies that keep you up at night, wherein Tropical Popsicle beckons you into their veiled world. Take jangly melodies of 60's garage rock, Psyche, Folk and Post-Punk inspired by Southern California beaches and cast a psychedelic gloom across the whole coastline; Tropical Popsicle brings the doleful feel of the end of summer, over and over again.

    born ruffians / birthmarks (yep rock/paper bag, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @j4ppqm6s:

    The 12-track album was written and demoed over the past three years and was produced by Roger Leavens at Boombox Sound in Toronto. A key ingredient to the creation of Birthmarks was a remote farmhouse in rural Ontario. The band wanted to return to the days spent writing their debut, Red, Yellow & Blue when they lived together and "whenever we had an idea we could work it out right there that moment." While some of Birthmarks was born on the farm, many of the songs were conceived long before. Luke Lalonde would write and demo constantly on his laptop, at home and on tour: Toronto, Montreal, Midland, Australia, France, Germany… everywhere. Several songs were realized during the recording process in the studio.

    super wild horses / crosswords (remote control, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @j4ppqm6s:

    Super Wild Horses are Melbourne duo Amy Franz and Hayley McKee. Formed in 2009, the pair have carved a name for themselves locally and internationally as leaders among the lo-fi garage / DIY scene currently exploding out of Australia. The pair stitch together a patchwork of guitar, drums and keys over dual harmonies and sparse arrangements.
    Crosswords is a reflection on the guessing game of life; the times you get it right, and the times when you’re left staring at the aftermath of a bad decision. The album sees the duo exploring a wider range of influences from soul, country and pop and, at times, even more melancholic tones, as well as their unique brand of garage-driven goodness.

    @1oxi8x96:

    Dear Reader,
    We are UUVVWWZ, an avant-blues quartet from Lincoln Nebraska, comprised of Teal Gardner, Jim Schroeder, Dustin Wilbourn, and David Ozinga. We have been playing as UU for five years and have put out one album previously, a self-titled record that was screech-cronky, clubbier, and babier than our current work, the trusted language.
    We took two years to write this album and are pleased to present these eight songs to you. In the trusted language we aspire to braid music theory with experimental poetry, which functions as a conduit toward a schizo-cultural critique and embodied project. From our previous record to the trusted language listeners will note a development, a shift resulting in an exceedingly unified perspective that is more acutely political and cohesive sounding.
    Lovingly,
    UUVVWWZ

    Hey hotshot — ain't you heard, The Howling Hex are back in town, mile-high style this time! New Border Funk has packed up and headed north, both geographically and in terms of tempo. Tightly compressed songs, alien guitar textures, wild high spirits are all ringing out in the big town; square-state rock at it's far-flung best!

    @1oxi8x96:

    We’re very happy to announce the return of Shotgun Jimmie with a brand new LP Everything, Everything. 16 tracks of self-recorded rock and roll heart; tonnes of bangers, lots of love. The follow up to the Polaris long-listed Transistor Sister sounds like “Jonathan Richman jamming with Eric’s Trip at a Wes Anderson’s house” according to Joel Plaskett, and he would know because we gave him a copy of the album already. John K Samson says “Much like the cabin in a Manitoba winter where it was made, Shotgun Jimmie’s Everything, Everything welcomes us into a consoling shelter of exceptionally natural, generous, and expressive songs. Jimmie has built a beautiful and lasting record. You leave it more alert to the world around you.” And oh boy are we excited he thinks so! We love it too and can’t wait for you to hear it.

    fat history month / bad history month (sophomore lounge/exploding in sound, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @1oxi8x96:

    New music from Boston based alt-folk duo Fat History Month.

    These guys have earned a pretty dedicated group of followers after their first release and with good reason, they make deliciously tense and compelling music. It pines back to, on this track specifically, to old The Lonesome Crowded West-style Modest Mouse. In that they use untuned guitars and lots of noise to create what are some of the most satisfying build ups I can think of. This song feels very dense because of it, and it’s really hard to believe just two people are making such switch sweet, moody sounds.

    the wonder stuff / oh no it's… the wonder stuff (irl, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @1oxi8x96:

    ’Oh No It’s…The Wonder Stuff’ is the band’s 7th studio album and comes with the highly anticipated 'From The Midlands With Love' disc, a series of covers of other Midlands bands performed by The Wonder Stuff. Their seventh studio album is rated 8/10 by Uncut magazine, and “one of the most impressive comeback records of our time” by Sabotage Times. Special mention to the fiddle playing of Erica Nokalls, who drives the faster songs along at a belting pace. The album also marks the recording debut of former Pop Will Eat Itself drummer Fuzz Townsend and he gives a steady beat to drive the good ship Wonderstuff along nicely.
    Band leader Miles Hunt said this album would be a return to what the band do best and what the fans wanted, namely lots of uptempo songs with sing- a-long choruses.

    secret mountains / rainer (friends, 2013)

    ▼ download

    @1oxi8x96:

    Friends Records presents the debut long player from Baltimore’s Secret Mountains, a young sextet whose handful of EPs and singles have captured a new take on an ancient yearn for psychedelic exploration via the deep soul, heavy pop and lush noise they’ve grown up engulfed in.
    Rainer is the dark answer to each member’s storm, prompting listeners to roar through their own tempestuous experiences. It is an inclement but brave battle fought by the authoritative percussion of Chris Muccioli, the calculated frenzy of Jeffery Silverstein and Cory Lawrence’s guitars, Kelly Laughlin’s commanding soul-gaze vocals, the sub-earth bass of Alex Jones and the blinding glow of Jake Winstanley’s keys.
    Flooded by the squalls of Arbouretum, the interstellar hail of Celebration, the thunder and lightning of Wye Oak and the howling rage of Sri Aurobindo, Baltimore’s psychedelic downpour has been bountiful. Secret Mountains offer a new ark to voyage the cosmos, a heavy path that starts deep in the grooves of Rainer.

    If you could stare into the eyes of death, The Cure and Interpol may or may not be waiting behind those blank pupils for you. But you can bet they’re there for Twin Tigers, where the blackest depths come with a slight tinge of goth-pop. These Georgia peaches build bittersweet melodies from a put-on despair, drawn from the band’s natural dark side.

    @1oxi8x96:

    Fire Records delve further in to the Australian underground with the signing of Melbourne-based four-piece Lower Plenty. Their transfixing LP 'Hard Rubbish' was voted Album of the Year 2012 on Aussie indie bible Mess + Noise and is due for a worldwide release on 1 April. "While the rest of the world were busy embracing Tame Impala, back on their home soil they were being gently eclipsed by one of those rarities in the age of instant blogging and fanfare - a true word of mouth success. With very little in the way of promotion and no presence on the social networks, the whispers soon started and the news of Lower Plenty's enchanting no budget lofi pop gem spread from turntable to turntable." This lead to a label feeding frenzy but the band found the perfect new home in Fire Records, who have quietly been supporting the overseas awareness of new Antipodean music for the past few years, releasing records by the likes of HTRK, Opossom, Blank Realm, Scott & Charlene's Wedding, Ned Collette, Surf City and Orchestra of Spheres. Lower Plenty will also be releasing a split 7" on Matador as part of the label's singles club.

    @1wnduwcv:

    We’re very proud to announce a new release by the UK duo known as The KVB via our sublabel Cititrax. Combining shoegaze guitars, minimal synth melodies, hypnotic drum machine rhythms and reverb drenched vocals, The KVB was first formed in 2010 as the solo project of Klaus Von Barrel. He was later joined by his girlfriend Kat Day, who added synthesizers and abstract visual elements. Their sound can be described as dark, layered, complex and moody – an icy atmosphere juxtaposed by the warmth of distorted guitars.

    fiction / the big other (moshi moshi, 2013)

    ► listen | ▼ download

    @1wnduwcv:

    In the weird, hyper-speed blog-world of the 21st century musical underground Fiction’s ‘80‘s inflected, thoughtful, outsider indie has served to set them apart from a revolving door of faddish trends and fly by night ‘scenes’.
    Taking a template determined by debut single Curiosity, the London based quintet of James Howard, Mike Barrett, Nick Barrett, Dave Miller and Jacob Smedegaard saw their rich mash of poly-rhythms and spidery guitar lines pay dividends when second single Big Things was picked up and playlisted by 6music and chosen for an advert by Ford.
    With recording for their album underway, Fiction’s multi-instrumentalists honed their live performance with a number of high profile support slots - Warpaint, Metronomy and Everything Everything - and dropped a new track Careful in the summer - regarded to be “Unquestionably one of the singles of the year so far” by The Sunday Times.
    Now, the distillation of eighteen months work, The Big Other produced by Ash Workman and James Ford, is released by Moshi Moshi.
