astonishing, tu talisman:
thalia zedek band / via (thrill jockey, 2013)
@5a3rewsk:
On Via, Zedek presents a collection of songs that range from the harrowing to the heartfelt. The opener “Walk Away” is a triumphantly melancholic exploration of living with ghosts, with Zedek’s richly emotive voice augmented by David Michael Curry’s gravelly viola and Mel Lederman’s measured piano. Via also features some of Zedek’s noisiest material in some time. Halfway through “Want You To Know,” Zedek’s guitar erupts into a wash of fuzz, foreshadowing the climax of pounding drums and psychedelic soloing. Via is an album about recovery, loyalty, chance, and gratitude: universal themes that become stirring in Zedek’s hands.
The album was written during two distinct sessions over the course of four years. The first set of songs was written during the period of touring after the release of Liars and Prayers with longtime drummer Daniel Coughlin, who was also in Come. After Coughlin’s departure from the band, Zedek recruited Son Volt drummer Dave Bryson, who’s simple, spacious playing allowed her to stretch and experiment with new sounds and ideas. It was recorded by Andrew Schneider at New Alliance and Translator Audio in June and September of 2012. Via has a gravitational field, a magnetic pull brought on by the weight of the words and the mass of the sounds created. Regardless of her status as a pioneering woman in independent rock, Thalia Zedek’s music stands on its own in its startling honesty.

Suicide of Western Culture / Hope Only Brings Pain (2013)
“The long awaited moment has finally come. Following their epic debut album, The Suicide of Western Culture, returns to bring you their haunting second album, “Hope Only Brings Pain¨ (Irregular, 2013).
The Suicide Of Western Culture is no longer a secretive duo. Their eponymous first album was named the best Spanish electronic music album by press, public and critics in 2010. Since then, they’ve been touring around half of the world (SXSW, FYF Festival, The Great Escape, Eurosonic, C/O Pop, Wilsonic, Popkomm, Primavera Sound, Sónar, Rockmotives, Vienna Electronic Beats, LeFest, Canadian Music Week, etc.) and supported artists such as Animal Collective, Orbital, Cut Copy, Clark, etc. Now, it is time to strike back again.
Undoubtedly “Hope Only Brings Pain” means a step further in their musical career. They have even managed to improve their music, a sound very well linked to the “don’t waste it, use it” movement. This new album is an organized, mechanical, playful, musical chaos. Tragic but hopeful in every note. The eclectic album with a sci-fi feel is composed of ten massive tracks that are guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. An unstoppable combination of lo-fi electronics, noisy-analog beats and emotional post-rock to take you on a journey from the dark to the uplifting”.

low / the invisible way (sub pop, 2013)
@1fco0a89:
We here at Sub Pop are honored to have our name attached to The Invisible Way, Low’s tenth album in 20 years as a band. Rather than put together our own, inevitably-inadequate description of the album, we will let Low’s Alan Sparhawk do the talking:
“While driving though Chicago, on tour, we stopped finally to visit Wilco at their studio, The Loft. They had invited us to come check it out several times over the years, but this would finally be the day. It’s a great place—a sea of instruments in a relaxed, open working environment. It’s cool, but what really converted us was hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks they were working on: big, simple, raw, and intimate. Plans were made then and there.’Don’t break my Grammy streak.’
We have worked with many of the great engineer/producers. Jeff Tweedy has been on our side of the microphone for over 25 years, however with engineer (and fellow Grammy winner) Tom Schick, he has of late become a formidable and eclectic producer. He spoke a language we understood, but then took us effortlessly into the mystery.We’ve made many records, and you know our M.O.: slow, quiet, sometimes melancholy, and, we hope, sometimes pretty…
How is this different from any other Low record?- Mimi sings lead on five of the eleven songs (she usually only does one or two, despite being a fan favorite).
- Piano, lots of piano… and an acoustic guitar.
- Songs about intimacy, the drug war, the class war, plain old war war, archeology, and love.
Thank you for your time again and please enjoy what we made. I think it’s beautiful."

estos estan en el cartel del primavera:
daughter / if you leave (4ad, 2013)
@1fco0a89:
Daughter is a London-based trio consisting of Elena Tonra (vocals, guitar), Igor Haefeli (guitar) and Remi Aguilella (percussion).
If You Leave is Daughter’s debut album. Recorded over a period of months at home and in various spaces around London, it was produced by Igor with additional production from Rodhaidh McDonald (The xx, Adele) and Jolyon Vaughan Thomas, and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83) at High Bank Studios.Less of a statement of intent, these songs are more a snapshot of a year in Daughter’s short life. Lyrically, Elena plumbs the depths of her psyche to reveal her innermost thoughts, finding catharsis in expounding those internal demons. There may be little light relief here, but the personal themes have universal appeal; tales of doubt, insecurity, fear, anger and loneliness all take centre stage. Musically, Daughter balance an intricate interplay between vocal, guitar and rhythm section. Elena’s vocals are fractured, often delivering savage words with a smoke-tinged whisper. Igor wrestles his guitar to build up a stark and brutal landscape, colliding with Elena’s more structured rhythm guitar. All are punctuated by the jolts of Remi’s minimalist drums.
