    sean nicholas savage / bermuda waterfall (arbustus, 2014)
    style: outsider pop

    ▼ download | 320kbps

    @2t83cnfo:

    Bermuda Waterfall is the new album from Canadian singer-songwriter and ballad composer Sean Nicholas Savage and will be released May 12th. Savage’s gift for bracing, timeless song craft and prowess as a philosopher reaches a new zenith with Bermuda Waterfall, which presents 12 tightly written pop songs packed with rich musical depths and devastating emotional gravity.
    The album offers listeners the opportunity to observe the fascinating evolution of a truly one-of-a-kind artist and confident expansion of his artistic palette. ‘Darkness’ and ‘The Rat’ see cinematic piano imbued with chilling honesty. ‘Heartless’ and ‘Hands Dance’ are carried by Spanish guitars and wouldn’t feel out of place in an out of place John Hughes film, albeit a decidedly unusual one. Elsewhere, ‘Empire’ and ‘Some Things Never Die’ see Savage’s lush signature harmonies hover longingly over new romanticist soul.

    fear of men / loom (kanine, 2014)
    style: indie pop

    @2t83cnfo:

    Fear of Men release their debut album which is full of well written songs about love and loss. This album is a perfect setting for anyone that was truly in love with the soft, yet beautiful side of 90's indie female fronted pop. The title of the album both alludes to the interweaving textures that run throughout the record and references the darkness that hovers above much of Fear of Men's output. Rather than simply marrying a handful of influences, Fear of Men designs their music from an almost uncomfortably personal place. Weiss broadcasts crippling disconnection, boredom and sexual dread with all the dour verve of a young Morrissey. The band flit between dire philosophical observations and listless melancholia, riding melodies so carefree that anguished sentiments come off more like lazy sighs. The songs owe as much to the writing of Anais Nin or Fassbinder's films as they do to the cold sonic atmospheres of the Chills or Broadcast. Classical instrumentations appear throughout "Loom", warped and distorted alongside musical saws and backwards guitars, giving a sense of the
    imperfect to the album's pristine pop melodies.

    pow! / hi-tech boom (castle face, 2014)
    style: synth punk

    @2rw3vmsg:

    Deep in the graveyard SF a young hand with black and cracked nails is pushing up through a broken pile of E-slag. Bitter teeth tear through server cables and motherboards, trying to be freed from the ever deepening sludge of tech waste…the Iphone is the new Styrofoam cup.
    Stepping over them, eyes glazed, feet dragging, blank face aglow in the eerie luminescence of the smart(?) phones underfoot, is the spirit of these songs.
    San Francisco has long been filling up with noobs…but now we face the most dangerous, the most egregious and blandest of them all... people with lots of money.

    NOBODY can square-up a joint like rich people.
    POW! have written a punk eulogy to our fair city.

    protomartyr / under color of official right (hardly art, 2014)
    style: garage rock

    ► bandcamp | ▼ download | 320kbps

    @or88jf2v:

    In a city full of brilliant people with dead-end jobs and dampened by bitter-cold winters, playing music offers a cheap outlet. Protomartyr’s taut, austere rock was incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed, feebly, by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable, hooky but off-kilter.

    There’s a temptation to call it garage rock, but that doesn’t quite fit. With respect to the local predecessors, this isn’t the primitive stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges’ greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is “stuck between the cracks.” If that’s the case, though, they aren’t alone. Protomartyr’s economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like Pere Ubu or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek (whose frontman Kevin Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr). Singer Joe Casey’s dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates — guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson — the opportunity to explore textures and reinforce the rhythm section. In other words, to “fuck around a little bit more.”

    This is never more apparent than on the band’s sophomore LP and Hardly Art debut, Under Color of Official Right. Where 2012’s No Passion All Technique favored comparatively straightforward punk structures, Under Color takes a more exploratory approach.

    The fourth full-length LP from Ian Svenonius' bi-coastal outlaw noise ensemble, Chain and the Gang. "Its not New Wave its crime wave" explain disgusted authority figures, who have sworn to put a stop to it. Featuring the snarled sounds of Chris Sutton on bass, Brett Lyman on electric guitar, Fiona Campbell on the drumkit and Katie Alice Greer on microphone and Svenonius, aka "Chain," as lead chanter. The record was recorded in Portland and mixed by Brendan Canty in Washington, D.C.

    wussy / attica! (shake it/damnably, 2014)
    style: garage rock

    ► bandcamp | ▼ download | 320kbps | pass: pssd

    @or88jf2v:

    Attica! is the 5th album from Cincinnati's Wussy, and the first to be released jointly in the US and UK. These 11 new tracks were recorded with old Afghan Whigs pal John Curley at Cincinnati's legendary Ultrasuede Studios. John Erhardt rejoins forces with former Ass Ponys bandmate Chuck Cleaver as the band's fifth member on some Dark-Side-inspired pedal steel, adding a further psychedelic smear to Wussy's ever-developing swirl of noise, or as some have described - Ohio Drone. Attica! is the band's loudest and quietest record to date, finding Cleaver and co-leader Lisa Walker at their lyrical best and Wussy as a whole at their weirdest and finest.

    tweens / tweens (frenchkiss, 2014)
    style: garage punk

    ► bandcamp | ▼ download | 320kbps

    @or88jf2v:

    Bridget Battle’s last band might have been a high school choir, but the 21-year-old singer for Cincinnati’s Tweens is no goody two shoes. Look no further for proof than their forthcoming Self-Titled LP, the punk-tinged debut from the trash-pop trio—Battle on vocals and guitar, Peyton Copes on bass and Jerri Queen on drums—that showcases a melodic, driven and exceedingly catchy sound that’s anything but well behaved.

    Tweens only formed in 2012, but has already made a name for themselves among fans—including The Breeders, who invited the band to open for them on a recent U.S. tour. The story goes that Kim Deal booked the band for one gig on the recommendation of Jim Blaze, owner of Cincinnati record shop Shake It Records, and was so impressed she brought on band to play select East Coast gigs and a full West Coast tour. Additionally, the band toured with the Black Lips, their partners in a party-centric attitude.
