Fallece Denny Doherty, miembro del grupo 'The Mamas and the Papas'
El cantante canadiense Denny Doherty, integrante del cuarteto The Mamas and the Papas que creó temas como "California Dreaming" y "Monday, Monday", murió hoy en Mississauga, Canadá, a los 66 años.
Seguramente mucha gente se sentirá poco afectada por esto, pero agradezco a Murnau que comentase lo antes posible esta muy mala noticia.
'California dreaming' es una de mis canciones favoritas de todos los tiempos. Sobretodo la versión maqueta de 1964 y que gracias a la red descubrí.
Por desgracia a través de esta noticia estoy descubriendo otras propuestas anteriores a Mamas & The Papas que hasta fecha de hoy no había tenido en cuenta.
Cass Elliot y John Phillips eran muy Cass Elliot y John Phillips pero este canadiense les seguía bien de cerca. -

Animal Collective
on tuesday the 23rd we release PEOPLE EP!
The EP is based around the lead track, ‘People’ – a hypnotic, slow-lumbering
roller that builds purposefully around a haze of shimmering guitar and
piano, a see-sawing (almost Fall-like) bass riff, scuttling percussion, and
dubby explosions. With little in the way of vocal lines, Avey Tare’s voice
is instead utilised in a series of simplistic chanted affirmations, yelps
and screams.
‘People’ is followed up by ‘Tikwid’ – a quirky, upbeat live favourite that
motors on rollercoaster piano, cartoon-ish sampled squelches; bustling drum
stabs and a runaway vocal chorus. It’s another killer track that sounds like
noone else and fits snugly alongside the likes of ‘Grass’ or ‘The Purple
Bottle’.
The brief spectre of ‘My Favorite Colors’ conjures a haze of processed,
haunted ballroom vocal warbles and slurred laughter, whilst the EP ends on a
live recording of ‘People’ – recorded in Boston on the band’s US tour from
Buffalo in march 2005, just prior to the recording of ‘Feels’. The first
three tracks were recorded during those sessions in Seattle with producer
Scott Colburn (Sun City Girls / Climax Golden Twins) in April 2005, and the
material features significant contributions from violinist Eyvind Kang (Mr.
Bungle / Sun City Girls / Arto Lindsay / Laurie Anderson / John Zorn), and
Kristín Anna Valtysdóttir (Múm / Storsveit Nix Noltes), who plays piano.Taking inspiration from a wide range of sources without ever being reducible
to a list of influences, Animal Collective are making challenging modern pop- music that defies easy classification or lazy pigeonholing. The mixture of
electronics and traditional instrumentation, of songform and soundscape are
integrated brilliantly and totally convincingly into a coherent, logical
whole. Bubbling, rippling instrumental playing coheres into fluid song
structures that seem to swell and ebb, building a throbbing, shimmering wall
of sound.

henry rollins is part of the USO
"Dose.ca" recently conducted an interview with punk rock icon Henry Rollins. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
On whether he gets off on offending people:"I'm anti-death penalty, pro-choice and, to some people, those might be fighting words right there. I'm for gay folks getting married — and someone wants to slug me just for saying that. But the point I'm making is that if that offends someone, then they can just kiss my ass, and please be offended — get really offended. Put me at the top of your hate list because I love being that — I love being your enemy on that."
On "The Henry Rollins Show", an indie program hosted by Rollins that was spun out of the D.I.Y. originator's monthly TV feature, "Henry's Film Corner", after broadcaster IFC recognized Rollins' potential and diverse opinions:
"When they said, 'We want to take off the leash and give you more,' I went, 'Noooo,' because this never happens to me. People usually say, 'We want Henry,' then I arrive and they go, 'Whoa, we didn't know it would be that much.' That's why I do most of my own stuff myself. … I have my own book company, I do all the DVDs, just so it is what I want — and you can take it or leave it, thank you very much.
"When it's other people's money, it's 'Oh, we didn't want it to be rated R, we wanted it PG, so people can see it.' People always want some watered-down thing they can sell. IFC wants you to do what you want and hopefully that works. And it does."
"My job is to not censor myself, and, thankfully, it's not like I need to watch what I say because I'm not abdicating that you take drugs, kill your kids, hemorrhage the middle-class and take their jobs away or start fake wars in Iraq."
On his other projects:
"I have a radio show in L.A. that I spend way too much time on because I love it; I have a book coming out that will be released whenever I drag myself through the three drafts of the 140,000-word manuscript; the TV show, I do a lot of writing for that, which takes a lot of time; I have a movie starting in May in Moscow that I have to train for; I have a large number of travel trips; I hope to do three more USO trips this year."
On his work with the USO that sees him visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, despite the fact he's strictly opposed to the wars happening there:
"I respect the job they [the troops] have to do — just not where they're being told to do it. My beef is not with war, it's with the Donald Rumsfelds and Dick Cheneys of the world — not with the generals, certainly not with infantry, the guys on the ground. I'm happy to be part of the USO."
Rollins was the featured guest on "The Hour" on Tuesday (January 16). The program, which airs at 11:00 p.m. on CBC in Canada, is hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos. The interview is available for viewing at this location.
Rollins recently announced plans for several ROLLINS BAND reissues throughout 2007. "The first two up will be 'Hot Animal Machine' and 'Life Time'," he said back in November. "Nothing will be different with 'Hot Animal Machine' but 'Life Time' will contain all the live tracks from the original CD release as well as all the studio tracks from the sessions. All these tracks on one CD will be a first. Later in the year we will put out the 'Hard Volume' album and the 'Turned On' album will be remastered and indexed with track numbers. There will probably be some other things from that era coming out as well. We'll keep you posted."

Six Feet Under's Lauren Ambrose Has a Boy
Six Feet Under star Lauren Ambrose and her husband, Sam Handel, welcomed their first child, son Orson Handel, on Tuesday in New York City.
"The family is very happy, the baby is happy and Lauren is doing great," a friend of the couple says.
Ambrose, 28, met Handel, a photographer, at a party in Los Angeles. They married in September 2001 in Massachusetts.
In 2003, Ambrose was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Claire Fisher, the hearse-driving little sister in HBO's Six Feet Under. Her new film, Starting Out in the Evening, premieres at the Sundance Film Festival.

Eastbourne Lights This is a song the third of my Great British Holidays EPs, the third in a series of four. Should be out sooner than the other three here. Recorded on a tape 4 track in a b and b in Eastbourne.
Genesis Rock I am currently writing 12 songs about the 12 astronauts who walked on the moon this song is about Jim Irwin who flew on Apolo 15 (obviously!) this project could take some time, don't expect it this year.

De puta madre, Hempror! A todo esto, creo que no se ha comentado, pero el nuevo de Animal Collective sale en verano (según la newsletter de Domino Records). Imagino que este año le toca al FIB, si es que están por Europa en esas fechas…

Hombre, aunque cada vez más pequeña, el FIB siempre tiene una cuota de grupos más o menos primaveriles (véase Black Dice en 2005, por ejemplo). Desde luego, en Summercases, Bilbaos Live Festivals y similares, ni de coña.
EDIT: Hablando de Black Dice, pa´cagarse; han remezclado el 'She Can´t Stop Traffic' de Television Personalities!! Sale el 20 de febrero.

el problema de Bowie es la edad, su estado físico y, naturalmente, la pasta gansa. Supongo que la contratación de Bowie para una actuación en plan aislada (o sea, sín gira de por medio) debe ser estratosférica, ademas de los costes de producción adicionales, más seguros. Creo que este dispendio sería el mismo en el caso (remoto diria yo), de que se decidiera hacer el "Botella de Oxigeno European Tour". No creo que este el PS en disposición de fichar a un dinosaurio como el…a no ser que se decidiera hacer una serie de recitales en plan modesto, sín mucho alarde escenográfico y todo eso. Me gustaría saber como esta de condición física, porque esto es capital, tanto para el como para la gente que pueda tratar de considerar una posible contratación. No sea que le de un jamacuco en medio de Rock & Roll Suicide, que quedaria muy bien, pero que tampoco es plan.
Yo lo veo chungo, la verdad. -

Su tercer álbum: Dancing For The Death Of An Imaginary Enemy (fecha de lanzamiento… ¡Marzo!), ha sido producido por Rick Rubin; así que, aunque no sea un dato relevante, ni ello asegure la "calidad" de un buen disco... yo, confío en que lo será. No lo dejéis pasar y... ya estáis dándole un escuchazo, ¡sordos!
Otro añito que pasará a la historia, y sólo estamos… ¡a 24 de Enero!

Los primeros Sebadoh, de gira americanaLou Barlow, Eric Gaffney y Jason Loewenstein se reúnen por primera vez para una gira de más de treinta fechas.TEXTO: Guillermo de la Madrid 24/01/2007La formación original de Sebadoh, que integraron en su día Lou Barlow, Eric Gaffney y Jason Loewenstein, se reunirá esta primavera por primera vez para llevar a cabo una gira de más de treinta conciertos por Estados Unidos.
Sebadoh comenzó en 1987 como el proyecto personal de Barlow (bajista en Dinosaur Jr), y hasta 1989 se fueron incorporando Gaffney y Loewenstein. El trío fue responsable de los álbumes clásicos de la banda a lo largo de los noventa, editando, entre otros, "III" (1991) -que Domino reeditó en 2006-, "Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock" (1992) y "Bubble And Scrape"(1993), antes de que Gaffney abandonase la banda definitivamente en otoño de 1993.
Esta gira americana de reunión tendrá lugar entre el 26 de febrero y el 16 de abril y se espera que la banda interprete temas de todas las épocas de Sebadoh. De momento, no hay perspectivas de que el trío vaya a conceder conciertos en Europa.

Que lástima que esten a la greña (y de una forma casi irreconcibiable), pero soñar con un reencuentro Klaus Dinger, Michel Rother y Conny Plank, o sea, NEU! seria algo tremendamente interesante. Al menos, y uno se puede conformar con ello, los dos primeros tocan juntos, como se vio en BCN hace dos años.
Por cierto…¿sería muy complicado encargar a estos dos un Don't Look Back del primer disco de NEU!?. ¿Y los FAUST?. ¿Y CAN?. ¿Y...?
