_HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Jazz saxophonist Jackie McLean, a performer and teacher who played with legendary musicians including Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, died Friday. He was 73.

McLean, a contemporary of some of the 20th century's most famed jazz musicians, died at his Hartford home after a long illness, family members told The Hartford Courant.

McLean was founder and artistic director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford's Hartt School. He and his wife, actress Dollie McLean, also founded the Artists Collective in Hartford.

University President Walter Harrison said that despite his many musical accomplishments, McLean was a modest man whose connections with his students lasted for decades after they left his classroom.

"He fully understood the way that jazz as an art should be passed down to students," Harrison said. "He saw his role as bringing jazz from the 1950s and '60s and handing it down to artists of today."

McLean, a native of Harlem in New York City, took up the soprano saxophone as a teen and quickly switched to the alto saxophone, inspired by his godfather's performances in a church choir, he told WBGO-FM in Newark, N.J., in an interview in 2004.

McLean went on to play with his friend Rollins under the tutelage of pianist Bud Powell, and was 19 when he first recorded with Miles Davis.

He drew wide attention with his 1959 debut on Blue Note Records, "Jackie's Bag," one of dozens of albums he recorded in the hard-bop and free jazz styles.

He also played with Charles Mingus and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, experiences that he credited with helping him find his own style as he tried to emulate the famed Charlie "Bird" Parker.

"I never really sounded like Bird, but that was my mission," McLean said in the radio interview. "I didn't care if people said that I copied him; I loved Bird's playing so much. But Mingus was the one that really pushed me away from the idea and forced me into thinking about having an individual sound and concept."

McLean taught jazz, African-American music, and African-American history and culture at the University of Hartford. He received an American Jazz Masters fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001, and toured the world as an educator and performer.

McLean, a heroin addict during his early career, also lectured on drug addiction research.

                            Gene Pitney Dead at 65

                            Matthew Solarski reports:
Legendary singer Gene Pitney passed away Wednesday morning at a hotel in Cardiff, Wales, according to various sources. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member was 65 years old. Just the previous night, he had received a standing ovation for a performance at St David's Hall in the Welsh capital. The cause of death has yet to be determined, but officials do not suspect foul play, Reuters reports.

His career spanning over four decades, Pitney defied the simple "crooner" tag by singing with a conviction seldom heard among his contemporaries (who included Roy Orbison), exhibiting considerable range, and championing burgeoning acts like the Rolling Stones before their heyday. Indeed, early in his career, Pitney recorded a cover of the Jagger-Richards song "The Girl Belongs to Yesterday".

Pitney is perhaps best known for the hits "24 Hours From Tulsa" and "A Town Without Pity", the title song from the 1961 Kirk Douglas film. The latter number also wound up among tunes by Sonic Youth, Beck, and the Flaming Lips on the soundtrack to Richard Linklater's 1996 film SubUrbia. A dedicated live performer, the much-loved singer died while in the midst of a 23-date tour of Britain. He is survived by his wife Lynne and three sons.

US singer Pitney found dead in Cardiff

Singer Gene Pitney, 65, has been found dead in a Cardiff hotel room.
He was found in his bed at the Hilton Hotel in the city. Pitney was mid-way through a 23-date UK tour and had played St David's Hall last night and was due to perform in Bristol later.

South Wales police said they had been called to the hotel at 9.50am and that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The US star had his breakthrough hit, 24 Hours From Tulsa, written by Bacharach and David, in 1962. He had 11 top ten hits in this country including That Girl Belongs To Yesterday and Looking Thru The Eyes of Love.

He had a number one with Marc Almond, singing Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart, in 1990. In 2002 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Pitney, who is credited with helping the Rolling Stones break into the US, is survived by his wife Lynne and three sons.

Sufjan Stevens + Rosie Thomas = New Album, Baby

                              Matthew Solarski reports:

Ah, springtime. It turns the world of indie into a freakin' love-fest, drawing artists to one another like bees to flowers. To make music, naturally. And sometimes…other things.

The latest salsa-hot collabo comes courtesy of lovable former Sub Pop songstress Rosie Thomas, who has recruited two fellow lovable, wholesome folkies to spruce up her latest batch of recordings. The boys in question: Sufjan Stevens and Philly singer-songwriter Denison Witmer.

The trio shacked up at Suf-jeezy's pad in New York City for three days, ate junk food, had pillow fights, and wound up recording some Thomas-penned songs on Witmer's laptop. According to Witmer's blog, Rosie played classical guitar, Sufjan plucked banjo, and Denison rocked the electric. All three sang.

In an email to Pitchfork, Thomas said, "[Sufjan and I] both decided that it would be refreshing and fun to just record some songs together on a whim and we did. The songs came out so good that we decided to finish the project this winter, and what I hoped would be an EP surprisingly turned into a full length." For the winter wrap-up, Rosie enlisted Witmer to add instrumentation and engineer.

"It was all a very organic process," mused Witmer via email. "The three of us have toured together a lot in the past, and I'm sure that had something to do with planting the idea in [Rosie's] mind. She (well, all of us) just wanted to have a fun, stress free, relaxing time recording with friends. As far as I know, that's our only real agenda at this point."

Rosie echoed his sentiments: "Somehow along the way the very thing I loved became more about touring and record labels and record deadlines and ordering tee shirts on time and press releases," she observed. "It was almost as if the business side of things took over the passion side, you know? And I desperately needed to work on something that brought me back to my core.

"Working with Sufjan reminded us both of how we used to love to write for our own sense of well being, not by any other expectation."

Since Thomas is no longer signed to Sub Pop, there's no word yet who will put out the joint recording or when the adoring masses can hear it. "Perhaps," suggested Rosie– who also has plans to record with Iron and Wine's Sam Beam sometime soon-- "it will end up being a record we give to our families for Christmas."
And that's not all Rosie and Sufjan have been collaborating on, as the two lovesongbirds are having a baby together. Serious! For once, Pitchfork is not joking.

"Sufjan and I are also expecting and that is something we both are beaming about," wrote Rosie. "Life is good."

Awwwwwwwww-- I mean, congratulations! And somebody please phone the Guinness Book, as the world is about the embrace the Cutest Kid Ever.

Rosie sets off on a spring tour tomorrow night, possibly her last one for a lil' while. Bring flowers, hugs, and diapers:
                              ...
                              .....

THE SILOS - COME ON LIKE THE FAST LANE

DOM MARIANI - POPSIDED GUITAR - ANTHOLOGY 1984-2004

The Stems, Stonefish, Someloves, DM3 y The Majestic Kelp.

MR TUBE & THE FLYING OBJETS - LISTEN UP

En los sesenta y setenta Freddie Dillinger lideraba una banda llamada Freddie Feelgood and the Real Good Feelings.

                                    2. SUBWAY SUN, SUMMER SALT -- EYELESS IN GAZA album
Work continues somewhat sporadically on this seemingly Herculean
project, due in part to teething troubles with the new studio set-up.
Recordings have been concluded for this album (finally!), with
editing and mixing beginning this week. The genesis of this
particular project, I think it's fair to say, is proving to be one
the most chequered and 'peculiar' in the history of the band, as yet
another sea-change is sensed at work within the music. It is
beginning to feel like a single album again, and NOT a double, as
last reported. This is principally due to the exciting nature of the
concluding recording sessions, where inspiration and energy focussed
upon a completely different strand of creativity. This resulted in
the creation of several brand new songs and pieces, which will be
developed to, it is hoped, eventually coalesce as an entirely
separate set of recordings entitled ''MONSTER FIELD''. Meanwhile, a
summer release date is still hoped for SUMMER SALT, and negotiations
are imminent for a release outlet outside of the more usual (of late)
                                    A-Scale aegis. Watch this space.

                                    3. PLAGUE OF YEARS -- MARTYN BATES "overview" album
To be released on SubRosa, this Martyn Bates' overview album, will be
released early June 2006, coinciding nicely with the Brussels solo
                                    and EYELESS IN GAZA concerts.

                                    4. FROM INSIDE THE WALLED GARDEN -- TWELVE THOUSAND DAYS album
This third album length release from Martyn Bates' and Alan Trench's
TWELVE THOUSAND DAYS is due to appear in May , on the Shining Day
label -- the quite, effective hand at work behind the release of the
AT THE LANDGATE ep. This batch of recordings is (at last!) at the
cutting stage (the cut has in fact been approved), and the sleeve
design is been readied as these words are being written. According to
Martyn the album has ''a different feel from the others -- it is
still Twelve Thousand Days, but the canvas and foregroundings of this
particular reading are eminently more visible somehow ... the record
definitely reflects the organic circumstance of its making. Its an
obliquely personal album as well, in that the music bears evidence of
visibly marking the passage of time and events in both our personal
as well as our musical lives -- as individuals and as individuals
                                    coming together to create.''

A second TWELVE THOUSAND DAYS CONCERT, in Bristol, is a distinct
possibility for the late Summer. Meanwhile, the SEVEN VOYAGES arm of
the Cryphanthus nexus has been busy building upon the success of
their live settings of the HEXEN film, hatching various soundtracks
-- for example, for a 20's silent version of THE MAGICIAN -- and
preparing various scattered examples early cinematic films of renown
-- for an unsuspecting Chinese market: East meets West, in what
threatens to be a most distinctive, and perhaps hitherto unsuspected
                                    manner.

                                    5. TO A CHILD DANCING IN THE WIND -- TROUM/MARTYN BATES album
To A Child Dancing In The Wind, Martyn Bates’ collaboration with
Troum is definitely out by the end of this month (April).
Transgredient Records releases the album and it will be announced at
the Troum http://www.troum.com/ and Drone Records <http://
www.dronerecords.de/> web sites soon for the price of 12 Euro. (It
will also be available directly from A-Scale.)

The album features settings of works by the Irish poet W. B. Yeats,
the release comprises the following tracks: The Arrow/Mad as the Mist
and Snow/The Magi/Mad Reprise/I Made My Song. The album has been
described as being a "lush and sublimal interplay with and
investigation of Yeats’ lyric sensibility … a kind of mystic folk
marriage of the supine and the airborne … ." Martyn is singing on 4
                                    of the tracks.

                                    6. DISSONANCE -- MARTYN BATES’ first solo project
Talks continue -- something of a 3D nature is getting closer!
(Curiously, copies of the original American version of Dissonance
have been selling for $300 plus, of late ... this augur well for the
long looooooooong overdue first 'full' release of this curio?)

                                    7. MARTYN BATES’ solo MYSTERY SEAS (Letters Written #2)
Re-released in Europe (Switzerland) by Shayo http://www.shayo.com.
This release is now available for purchase via A-Scale (see web page
for postage details and address (currently via me until Paypal
payments have been worked out by the offices of A-Scale). It does
sound different (and the packaging is different) from the previous
release (but no remixes or added material).

P.S. I must also mention two more somewhat related news items:

a, ORCHIS have a wonderful new EP -- 'Other Days' -- released in mp3
