  • Our Sleepless Forest - Our Sleepless Forest (Resonant, 2008)

    @2fm3j8gx:

    Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space rock from a
    frighteningly young three-piece from South London - their first full
    release, having had an early version of album track 'The Tinderbox' included
    on the Type Records 'Free The Future' compilation.

    Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara started
    experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds using software and
    basic recording equipment, inspired by the music they were into and with the
    aim of creating their own wall of sound. After 14 months they emerged with
    something they were sufficiently happy with to allow it to be heard by
    others, and ultimately that brings us to the present day - an eight-track,
    45-minute debut that is comparable to any in this field in recent times.

    Our Sleepless Forest's music is multi-layered, complex and dense, yet
    dedication and attention are rewarded as the intricate slow-build melodies
    are revealed beneath the feedback, crackle and hiss. Reminiscent at times of
    the likes of Loscil or even Radiohead's more out-there moments but on the
    whole avoiding the predictable comparisons associated with music of this
    genre, this is an album that simply has to be heard.

    Press to follow; opening track 'Nomads' was played by Mary Anne Hobbs a
    couple of months back, and influential Manchester-based website Angry Ape
    have lined up an interview with the band.

  • Foals - Antidotes (Sub Pop, 2008)

    @7jzu2gfk:

    Foals are a five-piece dance-rock band currently living in and native to the town of Oxford, England. Completing the circuit between the minimalism of American composer Steve Reich, guitars that sound like insects and tennis player Andy Roddick, theirs is a uniquely winning formula. Driving percussion high in the mix, guitars played above the 12th fret, no chords, splashes of synth color all come together like the schematics for a piece of precision engineering. And there’s something strange about those guitars. “They’re meant to sound like insects,” offers singer/guitarist Yannis Philippakis, “like a cloud of insects forming these strange harmonies.”

    Last June, Foals traveled to Brooklyn, NY to record Antidotes, with TV on the Radio guitarist and producer (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars) David Sitek. Recording took five weeks. The horn section from afrobeat band Antibalas played on five tracks and Celebration’s Katrina Ford sang on another. Lauded variously as “Shitpipe midget guitar strap bullshit,” “Snotty art school dropouts hungry for the dollar,” and one of the new bands that will define 2008 (by NME), Antidotes is the debut album by Foals.

  • Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea (Drag City, 2008)

    @lla5d5q5:

    Nevermind a light, Silver Jews fans now have an end of the tunnel, period. The wait for David Berman and co.'s sixth album, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, will end with its June 17 release on Drag City.

    The follow-up to 2005's Tanglewood Numbers is the first Silver Jews record played by the touring lineup that formed in 2006 in defiance of Berman's previous refusal to tour: Berman, his wife Cassie, Tony Crow, Peyton Pinkerton, and William Tyler. Lookout Mountain's tracklist has been rearranged a bit since our initial report, and one thing we didn't know then was that "Open Field" is a cover of a Maher Shalal Hash Baz song.

    Back to touring, the Jews' May appearances at the Primavera Sound Festival and the Explosions in the Sky ATP are just a couple of stops on a spring European jaunt. Then, for the fall, the band is planning a tour of the U.S. And according to The Tennessean, Berman will give a poetry reading at Nashville's Watkins College of Art and Design on March 12.

  • Xela - Heirs of the Fire (2008)

    @3beoxc05:

    Also dropping in March is a CDR I'm doing to coincide with my short tour in the USA, it's one long 35 minute track, recorded completely live and it's called 'Heirs of the Fire' - it's gonna be very limited and I'll have copies to sell at the shows, and will probably send a few to Aquarius and Boomkat too!

    "Such are those who deny their Lord. Their necks shall be bound with chains. They are heirs of the Fire, and shall abide therein forever

    Recorded Live on 6th March 2008. Contains Elements from the forthcoming album 'In Bocca Al Lupo'

    Xela is J.P.Twells Esq.

    Edition of 100 copies"
