      @andtheworldsmileswithyou:n6nz5bem:

      Syd Matters- Ghost Days (2008)

      @n6nz5bem:

      Although French singer/songwriter Jonathan Morali has carefully constructed a persona under the name Syd Matters, that of a slightly agoraphobic romantic writing and recording haunted musical messages from the safety of his bedsit, his third album features the debut of Syd Matters the band, a quintet featuring himself, two other guitarist-keyboardists (one of whom doubles on flute) and a rhythm section. The fuller sound of Ghost Days suits Morali's songs beautifully, giving them more depth and a certain level of lo-fi elegance. The soigné mopery of songs like "I Was Asleep" and the epic "Me and My Horses" is just the sort of wistful sadness that feels particularly nice to sink into on a rainy, lonely day, and the lyrics are salted with just enough flashes of happiness to keep the album from turning into a brooding downer. Fans of the Pernice Brothers, the darker side of Belle & Sebastian, and other acolytes of Nick Drake will find much to love here.

        Unwed Sailor - Little Wars (Burn Toast Vinyl)

        http://www.mediafire.com/?gunm5oydmj2

        @hzofvea4:

        Johnathon Ford's Unwed Sailor celebrate the 10th anniversary since their 1998 debut with their most accomplished record yet, and fourth full-length Little Wars. Little Wars is the summation of all Unwed Sailor have learned and experimented with over the years. Ford & company shape the sound with atmospheric keyboards, colored guitar, high on the neck bass and much more; resulting in melodic episodes that range from floating to the cinematic, and sometimes carry to even more intense segments, making Little Wars another necessity for any lover of instrumental rock. At the end of November 2007, the band finished recording and mixing of Little Wars, with the final Little Wars sessions recorded and mixed close to Ford's Tulsa, OK childhood home in nearby Norman, OK by Chad Copelin (Page France, Umbrellas, Ryan Lindsey) in his new Blackwatch Studios. The core line-up that recorded The Marionette and the Music Box with Johnathon Ford was re-assembled, including longtime guitarist Nic Tse who now lives in Hong Kong, drummer Matthew Putman, and guitarist Matthew Depper, and combined with the current live band which includes keyboardist Brooks Tipton, drummer Patrick Ryan, and guitarist Andrew Haldeman.

            The Little Ones - Terry Tales And Fallen Gates ep [2008]

            @2u5rp8z0:

            There’s something so comforting, so approachable about this Little Ones band. When they go out on the road with other, more notable bands, everybody on the tour must say it: “Man, those Little Ones guys are fucking cool.” If they crash at your house after the gig, they seem like the types to make their beds before they leave. It’s just a hunch, but we’re going with it, because it’s hard not to listen to Terry Tales & Fallen Gates and not begin to swoon over the Los Angeles combo’s pleasantly clattering indie pop. We’re reminded of stuff we’ve heard before (the little Beulah-esque guitar line on “Tallies,” the Kinksian 1960s pop nostalgia on “Forgive Yourself”), and we like that. We like being politely reminded of the good stuff. And when the rush of “Forgive Yourself” comes in — with those Nord Electros abuzz, and the drums perfectly aflutter — it’s an indie-pop summertime dance party in our backyard. And Little Ones are bringing the heat and hot dogs. — Ryan Allen

                        The Presets - Apocalypso

                        @1cj44l5h:

                        Some five years ago, relatively unknown Sydney outfit The Presets – comprised of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes – were exactly that: relatively unknown. No mocking anybody’s ego there. That being said, theirs was a star that was definitely rising. Signed to Australia’s Modular Recordings, and it would only be a matter of time before tunes like Down Down Down, Are You The One? and the beautiful Girl And The Sea became regulars at festivals, here and abroad. The Presets had arrived, and as they belted out monster tune after another at those festivals, they listened. They noted. And they began writing an album. Apocalypso is what they came up with. Much like the last few years have been quite a journey for the lads, so is this also; and it’s one hell of a ride indeed.

                        Kicking things off with what sounded to me like – wait for it – The Killers meets Justice , Kicking and Screaming has you heading straight for the dancefloor. With just a bit of cheekiness to it, you can’t help but want to move to it: hell, I can barely keep still as I write this. That said, nothing goes for the dancefloor jugular more than the first single from the album My People, and it’s one that’s sure to be a big festival hit in the European Summer, especially if the response at the recent V Festival is anything to go by. Chunky, hard, solid beats, with plenty of throw your hands up in the air and ‘scream your ass off’ kind of vocals. Awesome.

                        A New Sky takes it back a notch, but lifts you at the same time, with a bit of an 80s feel to it that appears from time to time, and later reappears with Yippyo-ay but is always welcomed. Enter This Boy’s In Love, for me, the absolute belter of the album. And on an album with some solid tunes, that’s saying something. Ridiculously and almost stupidly catchy, you just want to scream. The melody, the vocals, the crystal clear emotive techno; it all comes together in a seemingly perfect synergy to produce a damn fine tune, with an equally impressive video clip too.

                        Talk Like That and Eucalytpus throw up some cranking, almost dirty beats, with a relentless fast paced feel, but with vocals that manage to build undeniably razor-sharp pop tune. Imagine yourself in a car – and things are going at breakneck speed. Then, suddenly, you brake hard, and you come bumper-to-bumper with If I Know You: if there’s a Girl and the Sea on this offering then it’s this, with vocals that come from the heart, and if this were heard at a festival, then you’d just want to grab a loved one and nearly squeeze them to death. Aeons then throws the vocals out the window, and lets you sit back and just appreciate what these guys are pretty damn good at – sounds – and there’s an array of them here. Impressive to say the least.

                        All up, this album is distinctly ‘Presets’ in its taste. It’s one that thousands of people have devoured across the world, and what we’ve grown accustomed to, and while there may be a hint of a different edge, it never strays too far from what has proven to be a popular recipe. The beats stay chirpy, funky, but the electro pop is never far away. If there’s a criticism, and a mild one, it is that some of the lyrics can tend to have a similar feel to each other. Easy to overlook, and for fans of the lads, this will be music to their ears. Pardon the pun. Go get it.

                                    Graham Lambkin and Jason Lescalleet - The Breadwinner [2008]

                                    @1puw4bmu:

                                    Graham Lambkin and Jason Lescalleet are both highly respected artists, with small but intensely hardcore followings. Since 2001, they've been gradually moving closer towards realizing a collaborative project, and The Breadwinner is the results of two years of recording, reworking and polishing.

                                    Lambkin first entered the public consciousness at 19 when he formed his band The Shadow Ring, in Folkestone, a small town in Kent, England. The band was memorable and built an rabidly passionate fan base because of its sui generis approach, blending elements of folk, noise, cracked electronics, and surrealist poetry, while radically changing the overall formula with each release. A decade of increasingly skewed and inspired work culminated in 2003's I'm Some Songs, constructed long distance as Lambkin had relocated to the US in 1998. Over the last few years, Lambkin has primarily worked under his own name, most notably with 2007's brilliant Salmon Run, a precursor to The Breadwinner.

                                    Lescalleet has gradually and painstakingly built a compelling discography over the past decade. He uses reel-to-reel tape decks to explore the textures of low fidelity analog sounds and the natural phenomena of old tape and obsolete technology. He is one of a growing list of master producer/musicians, whose skill lies as much in reworking, assembling and mastering the material available as in creating it (or helping create it) in the first place. He has worked with such wide-ranging artists as Ron Lessard, Joe Colley and Phill Niblock, and has released a string of superb solo discs in Mattresslessness (Cut), Electronic Music (RRR) and The Pilgrim (Glistening Examples). This is his second release for Erstwhile, after 2001's Forlorn Green (w/Greg Kelley), and his third is already in preparation, a duo with Bhob Rainey, planned for release in early 2009.

                                    The material for The Breadwinner was recorded at Lambkin's house in upstate NY, over two recording sessions. The duo treated the entire building and its surrounding grounds as a studio, welcoming in outside sounds, which were later kept or eliminated as they felt appropriate. The subtitle on the front cover is "musical settings for common environments and domestic situations", layering numerous submerged fragments to find beauty in everyday life.

                                    "Jason Lescalleet's influence was palpably present long before the average Joe knew how many L's were in his last name (or could successfully google it). He spun tape loops with nmperign from the get-go, frequently signified the endings of his characteristically foundation-shaking performances by hurling a nearly indestructible, hundred-pound Peavy amp across the stage, and provided the bulk of the "disaster" in legendary drummer Lawrence Cook's "Disaster Unit 2000". But as the smoke cleared and the Peavy met its demise in a white-walled room, it became apparent to an awful lot of people that Lescalleet was making some amazing music; beautifully constructed symphonies of decay born of an intimacy with items and ideas lesser minds might discard: tape machines, lo-bit samplers, the tedium of everyday life. His ability to evoke powerfully complex emotional experiences from such muck made a collaboration with Graham Lambkin practically inevitable.

                                    Composer Walter Marchetti once made a statement to the effect that he was seeking to reach the "bottom" of music. Some more diligent attention to this task might lead him to the music of Graham Lambkin. Already marking out a glorious bottom with his former band, The Shadow Ring, Lambkin has pursued a music so removed from prescribed aesthetics that one is flooded by the beauty it seems to ruthlessly avoid. He puts the mundane to tape and carves out its horror, its sweetness, and its unsettling ambivalence. Shrouded in a disarming naiveté, the music leaves the listener ill-prepared for its very adult take on being-in-the-world. We are fortunate that humor can be so black, that we may surrender happily and willingly to an experience not many artists are willing or capable of delivering."

                                          Venga no pongo los dos rombos pero estos dos si que no están recomendados para alérgicos. A ver si sale pronto el LP de Barn Owl en Not Not Fun que su material del año pasado me gusta bastante, sobre todo Bridge to the clouds, bastante más folk que este donde se ponen densos:

                                          BARN OWL - Smoke Loom Ceremony CS (Blackest Rainbow, 2008)

                                          @34yyih86:

                                          Barn Owl have become quite the talk of the psych/drone/folk scene in the last year and for very good reason. The duo have released some great limited edition cd-r's on Digitalis and on their own, and their intense and trance inducing live shows have reeled in many believers, including us! Tapping into ritual drone and spiritual psychedelia this two song cassette recorded at a festival in Echo Park a few months ago is further proof that this is one of the most promising bands roaming the underground at the moment. While there are no shortage of psych drone acts these days, there is something so concrete and real about the sounds Barn Owl conjure up. Kind of like if newer Earth was less spaghetti western and more engaged in exploring LaMonte Young's dreamhouse. There is a patience and subtlety in Barn Owl's music that is way beyond their young years. They use guitars, drums, banjo, harmonium and voice to travel upwards to some magical place filled with dust, dirt and delight. This one is super limited too, so it'll be gone in the blink of an eye.

                                          ghq — everywhere at once CD (Three Lobed, 2008)

                                          @34yyih86:

                                          late in 2007 the core ghq duo of marcia bassett and steve gunn set off to jason meagher's black dirt studios to settle in for some multi-tracked studio action. joined by john truscinski of x.o.4 on drums, the trio laid down a series of layered drones unlike anything else in their catalog. After the disc-opening "Rembrance" sets the proper mood, the group kicks into "Four Trees" and establishes a new standard by which their stretched-out drones will be measured. In a collection of chilling recordings, the hazy and aching "Drop City Blues" shines bright with Gunn stepping forward to provide a set of extremely focused vocals. Everywhere at Once is a new and exciting milemarker along the band's continued ascent.
