          JESSICA BAILIFF & ANNELIES MONSERÉ - Untitled EP (Morc, 2008)

          @2tpxk5g7:

          For this gorgeous release, Kranky's Jessica Bailiff joins Belgian songwriter Annelies Monsere for a collaboration over four tracks of adventurous songwriting. The odd, zoned-out vocals of 'Common Ground' are set against a background noise of buzzing synthesizer tones and sombre cello strokes plotting out unfinished melodies. You might compare it to the droning folk songs of Fursaxa, or Islaja's experimental, misshapen songs. After a silky a cappella beginning, 'Let Time Breathe' accumulates a distorted chord sequence played out on electric guitar, giving a greater shape to the song than the unearthly drones of that first piece. The duo have a closer run in with a more recognisable kind of folk with the sinister, stop-start dynamics of 'Like Yesterday', held together by sparse acoustic guitar plucks and tentative string swells. The EP comes to an all-too premature close on 'Shadow', a beautiful - if surprisingly conventional - ballad, with bright synth oscillations cutting through the moroseness of the vocals and those bedraggled acoustic guitar strums. Here's hoping these two get around to recording a full album soon. Absolutely gorgeous.

            neptune - gong lake (table of elements, 2008)

            en primera escucha, este disco tumba. touch and go versión no-wave. muy psicopáticos, disonantes (recuerdan a nomeansno o a victim's family) y con un sonido correoso y rico en experimentación (table of elements es lo que tiene).

              A Broken Consort - Crow Autumn

              @1onxfpxz:

              Visceral violin vividly vibrating… or vice versa. I think this should be a pretty apt example of why Richie Skelton raised so many eyebrows: he can play so many instruments, with the utmost sense of dedication/evocation (also present in his titles). Add, once more, the sense of perfect layering/sound placement (that nevertheless maintains a spontaneity and ‘mantric’ relevance); on top of all, protected (and “inextricably linked”) by some of the most exquisite packaging + artwork. 'Crow Autumn' is part of Skelton’s trilogy released about last Christmas; fittingly immersed in thick, visionary fogs. Maybe, just maybe - his best piece yet.

              This album will come in handy while waiting for the next Animal Collective/Panda Bear brainchild. It’s all here : offbeat psychedelia, ecstatic screaming, tribal drums, out of this world harmonies, irresistible melodies, fractured musical collages, enchanting atmosphere. What’s not to like?

                                          Vetiver - A Thing of the Past (05/2008) - folk

                                          @23vqualb:

                                          Following a two year absence since their last long-player, Vetiver return with a new album, Thing Of The Past. A set of cover versions of songs by some of band-leader Andy Cabic's favourite artists, the album offers a joyful and intriguing insight into some of the music that has inspired and informed the band, whilst remaking the songs very much in their own image and existing as a stunning and coherent album in its own right.

                                          Produced by Thom Monahan and Cabic, Thing Of The Past was recorded in Spring, 2007 in Sacramento and Los Angeles. The basic tracks (all the guitars, drums and bass and some of the vocals) were recorded live in the studio, with the resultant record clearly showcasing a tight-knit band of talented musicians. As witnesses to their live shows over the past year will attest, this is a group in full mastery of their craft, fluid yet fully aligned, intuitively able to open out or reign in their power as the mood dictates. Featuring core Vetiver members, Andy Cabic (vocals / guitar / banjo), Brent Dunn (bass), Sanders Trippe (guitar / vocals), Otto Hauser (drums / keyboards) and Kevin Barker (guitar/ banjo/ vocals), the album includes contributions from two of Andy's heroes, Vashti Bunyan (who duets on "Sleep A Million Years") and Michael Hurley (who does likewise on his own "Blue Driver"). Other players include "Farmer" Dave Scher (keyboard / pedal steel / melodica); Jason Quever (piano / keyboard); Ben Kunin (sarod); Jonathan Wilson (acoustic guitar); Emma Smith (violin); and vocalists Meara O'Reilly, and Abigail and Lily Chapin.

                                          Cabic explains his thoughts behind preparing for the album: "Though recording an album typically entails making a good many decisions, some complicated, some instinctive, choosing which songs to record this time around happened pretty effortlessly. It was a mixture of a few tunes Vetiver had been performing live alongside others which I loved and thought we would do a decent job interpreting. I wanted to share songs which were favorites of mine and my circle of friends and perform them with a reverence and appreciation for their finer qualities, the lyrical and sonic nuances which keep me returning to them time and again for inspiration."

                                          While they had played a few of these songs live, mostly they went in to the studio with a list of tunes they hoped to try their hand at. From good-time stompers like Hawkwind's "Hurry On Sundown" and Loudon Wainwright III's "The Swimming Song" to the breathtakingly beautiful triptych of songs that runs from Biff Rose's "To Baby" through Ian Matthews' "Road To Ronderlin" and Garland Jeffreys" "Lon Chaney", this is a diverse and harmonious collection. With the album so centered around the lasting resonance of the song, the focus inevitably falls upon Cabic's gorgeously warm, honey-toned vocal, which appears perfectly suited to the material he's gathered. Rather than obvious plundering from the well-worn rock cannon, these are largely overlooked and forgotten tunes (spanning a period from 1967-1973, and mostly by US songwriters) - dusted off, reverently refashioned and given the opportunity to sing again. Though a few of the artists covered are well known (see Hawkwind's "Hurry On Sundown"; Townes Van Zandt's "Standing", Michael Hurley's "Blue Driver", Loudon Wainwright III's "The Swimming Song"), others among them are not, and in selecting and performing these songs, Vetiver have appended enduring versions which are very much their own.

                                          As Cabic comments, "I think this is the best album I've yet to make, in no small part because the songs are so good, but also because I didn't write them, which offered me a useful combination of restraint and freedom in performing them, bringing out the best in myself and the other musicians. It was an experiment in a lot of ways, and it was one of the best experiences I've yet to have recording anything."

                                          Ambient Not Not Ambient (Audio Dregs) - ambient

                                          @23vqualb:

                                          This collection was curated by Paul Dickow together with ERock as a long term project showcasing some outsider ambient works and blissed-out pop from their hometown in Portland as well as friends across the seas. Emphasis was made to bring together artists from a variety of scenes and different underground bubbles of music producers that remain close to our hearts. Though many of the artists may have never previously bumped shoulders it was important for us in keeping a common thread in the musicality and a conscious flow to the collection. Ambient Not Not Ambient should act strongly on its own merit as a complete thematically unified album of exclusive tracks, not an ad-hoc collection of unrelated tracks. This is part of the reason it took us so long to organize from conception to completion and to paint a larger picture with the variety involved. We are now stoked though and proud to offer this maxed-out 75+ minute compilation of exclusive tracks at special "EP" price. What you'll find is the mellow side of sonic terrorists like Yellow Swans (Load Records) next to old school electronic mainstays like Freeform (Skam/Warp) or AM/PM (Dreck) and full blown psychedelic wizards like White Rainbow (Kranky/Marriage) and Birdshow (Kranky). Tracks by Lucky Dragons unique "sound art" style next to pop craftsman EVax (of Ratatat fame) float together with sparse compositions by Sawako (12k). There will be some fresh faces on the table for almost any listener (even the hard-core music nerds), for instance Smoke & Mirrors is the debut appearance by a new duo featuring Strategy’s Paul Dickow. Some of our favorite experimentalists and growling amorphous freedom rock and anti-rock have been cross-pollinated with some of best musical friends and ever expanding audio family.

                                            joder, si que van por faena The Ettes, el anterior salió en octubre

                                            A todo esto, Laura Gibson toca o no en el PSound? Yo no la veo en la página principal (Pelukini me engañó vilmente 8) )

                                            Grails - Take Refuge In Clean Living

                                            Sounding something like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Bladerunner, it's lysergic and earthy for Grails in a new way. The rest of the record moves from blissful Eno-inspired ambience, to epic Morricone rock hymns, to an unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener back to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music.
