**Samiyam - The return [12", Hyperdub, 2008[/b:mehqhzv9]]

Hyperdub’s first US signing, and first hip hop tempo release comes from Flying Lotus sidekick, straight out of LA, Samiyam. With colab releases with Flylo under the name FLYamSAM, a recent selfmade CD ‘Rap Beats’, and a stunning, recent remix for Pattie Blingh for Ramp Recordings, Samiyam is rising fast. All the tunes on the Return E.P. carry Samiyam’s signature synth sound, melancholy melodies, and off-kilter, post-Dilla funk that will make you bump, your brain tingle, while you are simultaneously crying your eyes out. This style is perfected on the track ‘Return’ which has been featured in many a Flylo mix from the last couple of years, and the ultra-lazy grooves of the 8-bit ‘Trick Platform’ which plugs in nicely to recent Hyperdub releases from Quarta 330, Ikonika, Zomby and Rustie. On the flip, ‘Moon Shoes’ and ‘Cheesecake Backslap’, the drums get turned up, and the quantize function thrown out the window. Loose, lop-sided but totally funktional, this release brings a bit of smoggy, toxic West Coast sunshine to stiff old, gloomy UK.

Los detalles concernientes al nacimiento de Marco Fernández se desconocen,
pero la teoría más recurrente es que fue concebido en un avión en ruta
Madrid-Viena. No consume drogas, pero confiesa que le gusta comer chocolate
mientras bebe cerveza. También afirma que sus canciones no son tristes, pero
no es capaz de escribir temas alegres.

Su amor por la música data de una temprana edad, cuando, estando confinado
en una clínica recibiendo tratamiento para el asma, solía entretenerse
escuchando la música procedente de la radio de un paciente cercano
(principalmente rancheras y cantos religiosos en italiano). Para
recuperarse, un médico le recomendó que se ocupara en alguna actividad
creativa, como la música, por lo que comenzó a escribir canciones y a actuar
en directo. Aunque ha recorrido el circuito de salas de conciertos de la
capital, su escenario favorito es el de un molino a las afueras de Ourense.

Se hace acompañar por The Backstabbers, que, cual grupo de jazz imposible
sacado de una novela de William Burroughs, ponen en práctica la disección
del garage rock, tango, cabaret, country, folk y el ruido puro y duro para
dar vida a unas composiciones que hacen pensar en otra época y otro lugar.
La puerta a este universo paralelo y personal es Scarecrows on Parade, su
primer disco.

Tralala, a mí el de SY con Merzbow y Gustafsson me ha molado bastante, excepto cuando canta Kim Gordon (mi gran problema con SY), impro a tope.

Hot on the heels of their recent From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light lp, comes this super limited (only 120 copies) repress of a tour only cd-r, available again briefly on Jef from Tarentel’s Root Strata label.
This SF duo (featuring new aQ employee Jon!) brew up dark swirling druggy drifts, the guitars languid, hovering and buzzing in wide open expanses of slow slithery ambience. Bands like this usually revel in loooooooong songs, but here, 5 of the 6 tracks are just over two minutes, the longest, the 6 minute opener is the most fully realized and song-like, guitars shimmering and wet with effects, the result is like some incorporeal 16rpm Spacemen 3, drumless, and with the propulsion-level set to near zero, leaving just weightless clouds of haunting metallic reverberation, steel stings vibrating in a gorgeously washed out blur. A track like this should take up all four sides of a double lp, druggy and deliriously dreamy, a soft fuzzy musical opium den.
