Looking Into It, the third full-length from Portland's All Girl Summer Fun Band, makes me miss the 1990s. I miss that era of unabashedly rocking women. I miss being inspired by those who banded together with other girls to prove that shrieking or shredding wasn't just the provenance of those with a Y chromosome. Mostly I miss that time when it felt like you didn't have to choose between being girly or gutteral, cutesy or combative. Don't get me wrong, it's not that those of the so-called gentler sex aren't making music anymore, it's that, primarily, they are doing so as melismatic divas, sex-kitten pop stars, solo folk artists, or frontwomen in a boys-club band– all of which is fine, but nothing beats seeing a bunch of chicks with scruffy guitars, primitive beats, and catchy-as-all-hell melodies throttle through three-minute ditties without worrying about being lady-like, seductive, or serious. And with their new disc, All Girl Summer Fun Band have made me forget how long it's been since I'd heard such an act.
Though it has been five years since their last outing, AGSFB haven't changed much (save the loss of one member), which is strangely comforting. The now-trio-- the Thermals' Kathy Foster, former Softie Jen Sbragia, and Kim Baxter, who recorded and engineered this album-- is a musical democracy with each member contributing vocals, pitching in with the songwriting, and switching off instruments. Looking Into It isn't doing anything new-- it's another round of sugary girl-group harmonies layered over fuzzy punk basslines and lo-fi guitar riffs-- but its insistent, often cuddly pop is more sophisticated than these Girls' previous offerings. "Woo"-heavy album opener "Not the One for Me" sounds like the infectiously sweet and sassy songs by the faux band in the movie Josie and the Pussycats (that's no dis; Babyface wrote those!). And tracks like "Trajectory" and "Oh No" blend 1960s bubblegum melodies with delightfully sloppy do-it-yourself execution, adding edge to their sweetness while bleeding their punk influences of anything remotely aggressive.

Dark Captain Light Captain made their recording debut as collaborators on Milenasong's Seven Sisters album. This debut single gives strong indications that they've plenty to offer the great listening public in their own right, 'Jealous Enemies' is probably the sort of thing that would get them lumped into the same sort of folkish bracket as someone like Tunng, but that would be a mistake: they are far more interesting than any of those nu-folk tags might suggest, gravitating around a guitar riff you could imagine Radiohead cobbling together for a B-side, and even sounding a bit like Elliott Smith in its presentation. On the flipside 'Mid-Session Interval' lacks the immediacy of its partner, but still has plenty of plus points, including a bit of subtle electronic intervention and Rhodes melodies.

un poco tibio el disco de asva. ni me ha disgustado ni me ha emocionado. me lo esperaba más extremo. cuando se ponen en plan doom lento y solemne, nuestros orthodox les dan sopas con ondas, los sevillanos son más imaginativos y versátiles. si fuesen más salvajes, quizá se pareciesen a grey daturas, uno de mis grupos favoritos de este año. los temas tardan en arrancar. no sé… en general, ni chicha ni limoná…

Por fín (lo sé Forsi, no tengo perdón) me he puesto a escuchar a THE NEW YEAR (vía Myspace) y joder... como me han gustado los temas que hay colgados... el caso es que cuando he ido a bajarme el disco... el link lo habían baneado y buscando por otros foros y blogs, parece que todos links están igual.
Alguien podría...

Comprised of approximately 10 mostly instrumental tracks, Minor Cuts… occupies some realm between Rodriguez Lopez's familiar rock/jazz/Latin hybrids (The Apocalypse Inside of An Orange) and the more form-less audio canvases of his experimental solo releases (Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus). Travelling from one imagined dreamscape to another, the listener experiences what might be considered a variety of soundtracks to a night's worth of dreams, as well as a few nightmares. The sometimes-menacing juxtaposition of the various collaged sounds provides for surprisingly "visual" audio, while the melodies and fleeing structures remind one that there is indeed some vague, distant element of The Mars Volta present here. "Electrodorphines" pairs haunting Eastern tones and sunbursting Moog flourishes over acoustic guitars and the sound of warfare; "Pawn Shop Blues", the album's most straightforward track, is low-fi funk peppered with the unmistakable anti-soloing Rodriguez Lopez is famous for; brief album closer, "Atrotecism Fenleon", is a rare and exceptional treat: a radiant sixty-second window on the past, featuring the vocals of the late Jeremy Michael Ward.
