For three rainy days in March 2007, the seven-headed hydra that is NNCK holed up in Black Dirt Studios, their newly outfitted recording studio in the foothills of upstate New York. With a discipline & a clarity of vision they've rarely displayed before,the collective channeled all of their energies into hours of recording live, real-time improvisation. After months spent sculpting and recasting the raw material, Clomeim emerged–a distinct whole, recalling in its parts the communal howl of Algarnas Tradgard, the dead spirit channeling of Geino Yamashiro Gumi, the glacial shadowplay of 'Heresie' era Univers Zero, and Krautrock zenith Faust at their finest hour. Clomeim is that rare hybrid - a rock exterior with a cryptic, experimental core; a dense groover and a burning, exploratory psychedelic grimoire for the new dark ages." Highly recommended.

One of the best noise pop releases I've ever heard. Super obscure, too. And, I quote another blog, "Put together in a blender the 60's girl groups, C86, Shop Assistants, Go-Go's, fuzzy guitars and sweet destruction - you get The Fizzbombs." Sounds like Vivian Girls if they were actually good.

How did someone so young create music so sophisticated? That's the first question listening to Alessi's Ark, the debut by 18 year-old Londoner Alessi. Alessi's Ark is filled with an innocent kind of wonder at the world, her voice sounding otherwordly but strong as it carries words filled with visions of nature and magic. Add to this the sweeping strings from a symphony orchestra and a handful of instruments played by Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, two thirds of Bright Eyes and something special emerges.
Alessi decided to leave school at 16 and pursue a musical career. Her parents supported her decision on the proviso that she return to her studies if nothing happened after a year, so she wrote and recorded a handful of songs and took any bookings that came her way. " I played anywhere and just felt lucky to be asked" she says. "Then it all seemed to happen fast. EMI came on board, and I was asked who I would like to work with. I instantly thought of Mike Mogis, who has produced a lot of my favourite records. I met him and liked him straight away. Not long after that we started working on the album in Omaha."

HEAVY HANDS - Smoke Signals

New York trio Heavy Hands introduce themselves via Greg Weeks' Language Of Stone label, embarking upon a voyage of slick psych-rock and precision guitar licks. In a crowded genre Heavy Hands make their presence felt with a slightly more refined feel than your average bunch of lank haired riff merchants. There's something a bit Deep Purple about 'Black Heart' (although the soloing is hardly up to Ritchie Blackmore's standards) and 'From Stonehenge To Saturn' has Hawkwind written all over it. Smoke signals is not nearly so heavy as the sort of psych fare that Holy Mountain specialise in, but it certainly delivers in terms of retro authenticity, scoring bonus points for deft deployment of Hammond organ.
