With a widely regarded EP tucked into their belt, Fire on Fire’s first full-length steers the band square into the new roots movement with the confidence of a more established folk collective. Surely the enthusiastic backing of Michael Gira and the similar sounds of alt-folk-gospel label mates Akron/Family helped to ease them into the fold, as the group not long ago was playing progressive art-rock under the name Cerberus Shoal (and were prolific performers to that end).
We’re seeing this a lot these days: more and more bands putting their post-rock heritage on the shelf to take part in the new folk renaissance (take, for instance, Derek Fudesco's move from art-punk Pretty Girls Make Graves to folky alt-rockers the Cave Singers). With a focus on traditional, old-timey sounds and time-honored instruments, Fire On Fire is next in line, but in this case The Orchard bridges the gap through faithfulness to their unpredictable, chaos-oriented past work.
Recorded in the group’s home (all five members live together in a house in Portland, Maine), The Orchard is a grove of traditional folk (namely string) instruments and the many interpretative ways to play them – and around them. Bluegrass favorites like the mandolin and banjo saddle up to eastern folk fixtures like the oud and tamburitza, and vocalist Colleen Kinsella’s sharp, dissonant harmonies make for interesting -- if not disturbing -- arrangements. Think Grizzly Bear meets the Carter Family. -

To be honest, I’ve never been into horror films; the idea of watching something in order to make myself scared is as far away from my idea of pleasure as it is possible to get. And besides, if I wanted to be truly horrified, all I’d have to do would be to proof-read one of my own reviews. Yikes. Xela, on the other hand, is an afficionado of the form. After 2006’s Argento/Lenzi inspired The Dead Sea he has returned to the genre for his new album, In Bocca Al Lupo.
Which means “in the wolf’s mouth”. Yet that somehow manages to sound less terrifying than the Italian translation. Originally conceived for an art installation, In Bocca Al Lupo picks up where his release for the SMTG label Heirs Of The Fire left off, amidst swathes of hellish lo-fi static. If it were possible, I’d say that this sounded like it was recorded on tape, transferred to drizzle, and then transferred back to tape again. The opening “Ut Nos Vivicaret” is bewitched by the portentuous tolling of church bells, all coalescing into doomy howls. I’m reminded of Donald Sutherland running in the dark through Venice in Don’t Look Now (which means I must have seen at least one horror film), but with Kevin Drumm providing the soundtrack. The second segment adds a machine-like hum to its death rattle, I feel like I’m being tossed to the blades of an air-conditioning unit. The masterful “In Misericordia” is the densest piece, with the bells processed until they are but flickering reflective overtones above a deep dark body of water, which is then whipped into a fizzing froth by a raging storm wind. Abrasive metallic noise spills over into closing section “Beatae Immortalitatis”, which is beaten into and out of shape by the drums of Heavy Winged’s Jed Bindeman (setting off at an ominously slow pace, building up to Corsano-like crash and clatter). By now this is starting to sound like a particularly evil Wolf Eyes side project, and I can’t think of anything scarier than that.

ay… es que si me los posteáis sin portadas y me pilláis despistado me las como. de las pocas veces que no utilizo el buscador...
todavía no lo he escuchado, pero me voy a poner ahora mismo. cerberus shoal es un grupo que me mola bastante a pesar de que a veces se les ha ido bastante la pinza.

el que he escuchado un par de veces esta mañana ha sido el 'eras' de apse… 'spirit' me gustó muchísimo y éste no está mal, pero hay algo que no me encaja... no me sabe a disco. según tenía entendido, esto de 'eras' era un ep, pero por duración (42 minutos) les ha salido un largo. luego ellos mismos hablan de que querían experimentar y que se han dejado llevar sin saber qué les iba a salir. al final el disco parece más una recopilación de caras b, improvisaciones e ideas perdidas que otra cosa. demasiado rollo ambiental y relajado para mi gusto. todo se queda muy en el aire. tiene buenos momentos, pero es un disco muy irregular y en conjunto bastante anecdótico.

basándome en los tres primeros temas, el disco de fire on fire es folk con su puntillo freak y con rollo sureño (banjo, ritmos saltarines, bluegrass…). bastante digerible. canciones canciones, con sus estribillos y todo. sin nada que chirríe demasiado. yo me esperaba algo un pelín más rarucio, pero bueno... no pinta mal.
