With Acid – Mysterons Invade the Jackin’ Zone: Chicago Acid and Experimental House 1986-1993 Soul Jazz Records return to Chicago’s acid house music scene, following on from their earlier ‘Acid – Can You Jack?’ collection.
The compilation sees the UK label collect Chicago acid house tracks from the likes of Larry Heard, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Mr K-Alexi, Adonis and Phuture, the outfit credited with the first ever acid 12-inch (1987′s “Acid Tracks”). There are a few tracks you’d expect to appear in a compilation on acid house, including Adonis’s “No Way Back” and Mr Fingers’ “Can You Feel It” & “Washing Machine,” but the compilation also expands into more hard- to-find material, including Rocky Jones’s 1987 cut The Choice of a New Generation (Choice of the Underground).
The label has digitally remastered all of the tracks, and both the vinyl and CD version of the compilation will arrive with a graphic novel by Paolo Parisi that tells the story of Chicago house. (Or as the press release puts it: “Mysteron alien sound lords prepare to enter Chi-Town, as the acid melodies of Phuture, Mr Fingers and the city’s other music futurists open the portals of the Windy City to the Uberite invasion. How will this raving insanity end?”)CD 1

El otro día estuve escuchando viejos discos y entre otras cosas escuché a Polarius, que si no me equivoco también estaba dentro del colectivo Creme organization. De hecho, para mi es de lo mejorcito del colectivo. Me pregunto que habra sido de este hombre y si seguirá haciendo cosas.

Andrew Pekler selected 300 different covers from second-hand records and, using colorful geometric elements to cover over all titles, performer’s names, and label logos, removed traces of the covers’ original contexts. The sunsets, couples in silhouette, alpine panoramas, roses on pianos, female faces in close-up, and seascapes no longer serve as the packaging for easy listening and exotica. Instead, the romantic, bizarre and intriguingly bland images of the original covers are free to lend their evocative powers to the record of new music they now house. Likewise, the principle of collage is audible in Andrew Pekler’s compositions. Here, the electronically transformed fragments of audio extracted from the original records take on a new existence as Cover Versions.
