@2ke9ma0o:

    The second album from Geoff Farina’s Glorytellers finds the band sound gelling into a gorgeous amalgamation of Farina’s own musical history, and his musical heritage. Resonating with reference points from the Americana music canon, Atone vibrates with buoyant songs and vivid narratives.Geoff Farina has been making records and touring consistently since the early 90s, and he has carved out small enclaves of dedicated fans across the US, Europe, and Japan. His band Karate made nine genre-bending records and toured extensively for twelve years, and the songs he penned with The Secret Stars have reached cult status, covered by the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Ida. Since 2006, Farina’s Glorytellers have combined Karate’s quiet-rock urgency with the Secret Stars’ soft-spoken intimacy to evoke the best qualities of both bands. Atone, Glorytellers’ second release, is a collection of nine unclassifiable gems that gently unfold with ease and dignity.

    Atone reaches into all corners of Americana; Echoes of Harry Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin’” reverberate through “The Keystone,” as Farina narrates a train ride through the decaying mining towns of Pennsylvania. The acoustic and electric guitars on “Concaves’” are woven together like twin fiddles. Matt Pond recently described the deftly-fingerpicked “Just What I Was Thinking” as ‘Bluegrass Morrissey’. There is even a bawling Walter Horton-style Marine Band that punctuates the bluesy “Softly as She Sings.” But for all its pre-punk influences, Glorytellers have their feet firmly planted in 80s and 90s indie music: Had they been plugged into 100-watt Marshall amps, the guitars on “Fours” and “Omni Stars” would be at home on a Pitchfork or New Radiant Storm King record, and the six-plus minutes of “The Coldest War” seethe and simmer like Karate’s best album-ending epics..

    Spacemen 3 / Wooden Shjips - Split 7"

    @2ke9ma0o:

    For it's 50th release the great pop supplement offers up this incredible pairing of like minded spirits, for a total one off split 45. 2 unreleased nuggets from legendary psych rockers from both sides of the pond. The Spacemen tune is a beautiful demo to their last ever single, the mighty "big city". stripped of it's lyrical nod to the electric prunes, but still very much displaying the kraftwerk influence of the original, the softer spoken lyrical passages offer up an almost confessional electro blues variant, unique to this early take.

    After 2 studio LPs, Wooden Shjips are often bracketed with the Spacemen, with their blissed out Velvets / Doors / Kraut sound- so it's perhaps of no surprise that they should take on a Spacemen gem for their own reworking. "I Believe It" from the classic "Playing with Fire" album gets the nod for a radical overhaul- where the original's predominantly keyboard lead is given the Shjips' guitar fuzz and 2 note organ treatment. a killer take on an old favourite, debuted recently on the road and offered up here as their first outright UK release. Packaging as ever with the GPS is of paramount importance, cover art is provided by natty brooker (the original spacemen percussionist) and is from original work put together during his time within the band's first line-up. A pretty much essential and incredible 45, destined not to hang around long….

    Ahí queda eso. Seguiremos aportando cositas poco a poco.

  • The Fall-Slippy Floor (2009.)

    A one-off single to tie in with the current tour. A song of many parts, starting with a gorgeous bass line as MES intones, 'We're gonna get married/On the floor of behest.' Main part is a repetitive but addictive guitar riff along with seemingly random observations on the slippy floor in view of the Taj Mahal. All you get is a sloppy Fall? The typically lo-fi tape recordings at the end include what sounds like a tasty slide guitar based song snippet and another of those 'rhythms tapped out on the kitchen table with a spoon' jobs. 'So, apart from mixing that, there's not really much more to do with it, is there?'

  • a mixtape made by Transformation Surprise (Mary Pearson from High Places)

    This is a fresh feature on the blog where, instead of just the regular monthly NC mixtapes, you can hear mixes that some of our favorite artists put together for us. This time it's Transformation Surprise, the solo project of Mary Pearson from High Places.
    Regarding the theme of the mixtape she says it's "music that inspires my solo music by process and intent. This is the kind of stuff I listen to when my inspiration well is running a little dry."

    01. Tom Waits - Hoist That Rag
    02. Bow Ribbons - Let Me Down Easy
    03. Underworld - Something Like A Mama
    04. Cat Power - I Don't Blame You
    05. Portishead - Hunter
    06. Buffy Sainte-Marie - He's A Keeper Of The Fire

  • Ahora me he perdido.

    The Making of Ground Zero
    Yael met Jonathan Levy the musical producer of ‘Ground Zero’ and the band’s bass player, at Zion Square – where Jerusalem youngsters hang out – when they were both 15 years old. They have been making music together ever since and dreaming about this collaborative album. Eleven years later, living in Tel Aviv and persuing their professional musical careers, they finally fulfilled their dream. "Ground Zero" is the result of six years of a musical journey and hard work. For this project, Yael was also joined by Shaul Eshet, keyboards, a fellow class mate at their Jerusalem high school, Dani Dromi, guitar, also from Jerusalem, and Nir Mantzur, drums. In the five years prior to the production of "Ground Zero", Yael has been performing solo and with the band all over Israel while recording and creating this, her first solo debut album.
