Sally Doherty - Electric Butterfly

"Electric Butterfly" came into being when the unique vocalist
and songwriter Sally Doherty (collaborative members of Shock Headed Peters,
Sieben, Sol Invictus, …) began working with the gifted musician and producer
Colin Elliot. The 50-minute album include guest musicians Richard Hawley
(guitars and vocals), Shez Sheridan (guitars) and Liz Hanks (cello).
The cool left-field pop sound of "Electric Butterfly" reveals glimpses of
Sally's life-long passion for French chanson, South American bolero and
the songs of Jacques Brel and Scott Walker, and her love of incredible singers
such as crazy Peruvian princess Yma Sumac and the smooth
and seductive Chet Baker.

Omar Souleyman - Dabke 2020: Folk and Pop Sounds of Syria

Sublime Frequencies is pleased to present the second volume of Northeast Syrian dabke music from legendary vocalist Omar Souleyman and his group. This CD was compiled by Mark Gergis to coincide with the Sublime Frequencies UK/European tour in May and June of 2009, featuring live performances by Omar Souleyman himself. Culled from dozens of cassettes recorded in Syria from 1999-2008, the music here is an extension of Omar's Highway to Hassake: Folk and Pop Sounds of Syria release, touching on some previously-unheard angles. Their trademark serpentine synthesizers, electrified bouzok (traditional stringed instrument) and driving rhythms forge a severe form of "new wave dabke" with a live energy and integrity that captures the essence of the Syrian Northeast; one-of-a-kind Syrian dabke party tunes, regional atabat-styled crooners, and unbelievable Iraqi party jams. The CD is packaged in a cardboard sleeve with a paper insert.

One of the most important contemporary ex Yu and Serbian rock bends, Obojeni Program, has just finished their eight album called „Kosmos u tvom srcu/Igracke se voze levom rukom“ (Cosmos in your heart/toys are driven with the left hand).
The album contains twenty songs, five of which are remixes, and what is especially interesting is the fact that this is the best of compilation of the songs that have been replayed and by that actually made into new songs. It was produced by Boric Mladenovic, and the result of his work will come as a surprise for many fans of Obojeni Program. Special contribution to this album was given by Smoking J, who added a new, electronic sound to what was practically a recorded live performance of the band (the album was recorded ’in the groove’).
Obojeni Program was formed in Novi sad in 1980, and the first album was published in 1990. They are the only Serbian band that appeared on legendary MTV Show from the better days called „120 minutes“, and which the father of alternative rock, John Peel, included in his play list. With their previous, seventh album, the band made a full circle of their artistic work by creating acronym „NOVI SAD“ from the titles of the previous albums. For twenty nine years of the band’s existance, dozens of people have circulated through it, and the present crew is the longest and the most successful one. The band consists of Kebra – lead singer, Dragan – guitar, Ljuba – bass guitar, Cina – drums, Misa – groovebox machine and electronics.

Obojeni Program has been playing on Exit since its beginning, and their performances are always among the most visited ones.

Clutchy Hopkins Meets Lord Kenjamin "Music Is My Medicine" (Ubiquity records, 2009)

This whole Clutchy Hopkins business is very confusing. Ubiquity keep throwing all this mythology our way, telling tales about a mysterious figure leaving traces of himself via bags of 2-inch reels and "a vintage Caribbean tracksuit jacket found in the office fridge". Sidestepping the fiction and getting down to this new release from Clutchy and Lord Kenjamin, you'll find yourself in the presence of an instrumental funk/hip hop/dub melting pot; a record that plays out a little bit like a very live sounding Shawn Lee album - and rumours that Money Mark might be involved in this don't seem entirely frivolous given the emphasis on vintage keyboard instruments. Other prime suspects include Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow, but whoever Clutchy is, this meeting with Lord Kenjamin (is THAT even a real person?) features some great organic, analogue instrumentals that aren't taking themselves too seriously, as demonstrated by a cut like 'Tune Traveller', which waddles along nicely with a wacky, skanking synth. Elsewhere the jazzy reggae grooves of 'Cold And Wet' brings some downtempo depth to the record, oozing warmth from its airy low-end grooves…www.boomkat.com
