Vancouver-based The Pack A.D. is one of the latest additions to the impressive roster of Mint Records. A two-piece blues-rock band consisting of just guitar and drums, the all-girl White Stripes comparisons are inevitable, and in truth, apt. Becky Black and Maya Miller share the playful intensity of Jack and Meg White, as well as their anything-goes attitude. Elvis Costello- Secret, Profane & Sugarcane
Elvis Costello, as musically restless as he's ever been, is set to launch a new album on June 2. Titled Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, the album is produced by T-Bone Burnett, whose relationship with Costello goes back some way, Burnett having produced 1986's King of America and 1989's Spike. Costello is joined on the new album by "some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, bluegrass and beyond," Ten of the 13 songs on the new album are previously unrecorded. Two of them ("Sulphur to Sugarcane" and "The Crooked Line") were co-written with Burnett and one ("I Felt The Chill") was co-written with Loretta Lynn. This album is the first since King of America to be rooted primarily in acoustic music, although it's not Costello's first involvement with American country music, the influence of which can be heard in a good deal of his other work (not to mention his album of country covers, Almost Blue). It was only 9 p.m. on opening night when I hit my first pay dirt of this year’s SXSW in Austin: Capsula a kinetic trio from Bilbao, Spain — singer-guitarist Martin Guevara and bassist Coni Duchess, the band’s founding couple, are originally from Argentina — who were supposed to be obsessed with the Velvet Underground (according to a newspaper preview) but were actually a high-velocity union of the Cramps and the Who, coated in corroded glam. Guevara attacked his guitar with a serious case of Pete Townshend, and drummer Alberto Diez was an improbable mix of Keith Moon and the Velvets’ Maureen Tucker: flash with heartbeat. In the last song of the set, a furious space-out that sounded like the Who doing Pink Floyd’s “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” Guevara swallowed his mike Lux Interior-style and scraped his guitar strings along the edge of the stage. You don’t get those visuals with Capsula’s new album, Rising Mountains (BCore), but you get the idea — and everything I heard.
