Cápsula - Rising Mountains 2009.
It was only 9 p.m. on opening night when I hit my first pay dirt of this year’s SXSW in Austin: Capsula a kinetic trio from Bilbao, Spain — singer-guitarist Martin Guevara and bassist Coni Duchess, the band’s founding couple, are originally from Argentina — who were supposed to be obsessed with the Velvet Underground (according to a newspaper preview) but were actually a high-velocity union of the Cramps and the Who, coated in corroded glam. Guevara attacked his guitar with a serious case of Pete Townshend, and drummer Alberto Diez was an improbable mix of Keith Moon and the Velvets’ Maureen Tucker: flash with heartbeat. In the last song of the set, a furious space-out that sounded like the Who doing Pink Floyd’s “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” Guevara swallowed his mike Lux Interior-style and scraped his guitar strings along the edge of the stage. You don’t get those visuals with Capsula’s new album, Rising Mountains (BCore), but you get the idea — and everything I heard. J Dilla - Jay Stay Paid [Natural Sounds, 2009]

@2n5oom71:
This February marked three years since J Dilla's passing, three years which could have been his most productive, coming up as he was at the time of his death. In the absence of his dedicated and prolific work methods, the world has seen a few posthumous releases - legitimately or not, people have scoured Dilla's hard drives for fully formed and casual ideas alike. Ultimately, releases done with the right intentions have been welcomed warmly, The Shining and Ruff Draft among them, and now Jay Stay Paid, a 25 track collection of beats executive produced by none other than "Ma Dukes" a.k.a. Dilla's mother, who was extremely close to her son during his final moments and during the recording of the classic Donuts. If that isn't cred enough, Jay Stay Paid was culled under the musical supervision of acclaimed producer Pete Rock, who was high up in Jay Dee's mind when it came to beat production.
Mixed and arranged by Pete Rock, the album is mostly instrumental, but features a few familiar voices such as Black Thought and MF Doom (who has recently added his voice to one or two other Dilla beats in various contexts). It comes out June 2 on the Natural Sounds label.

Group Bombino - Guitars From Agadez, vol. 2 lp [Sublime Frequencies, 2009]

@mmsm8wcn:
Group Bombino is the latest salvo from the Agadez music scene. Led by the guitar virtuoso Omara Mochtar (Bombino), the group’s debut LP– Volume two in the Guitars from Agadez series, represents the latest chapter in the modern sound of the Tuareg revolution. As of 2008, the Tuareg rebellion is in full force again, and Bombino is in exile to parts unknown. Agadez has been cut off from the rest of Niger. The only road that connects this legendary city with the rest of the country is littered with land mines and the only escorts are the military. This music and its messages of hope, justice, and desire for validation of the Kel Tamachek way of life ring louder than ever. Group Bombino are gaining mythic status in and around the Tuareg community for their incendiary live performances. Coming from the same scene as Group Inerane and sharing some of the same musicians, Group Bombino showcase both sides of the Tuareg Guitar style. Side one features the “Dry Guitar” sound, an unplugged selection of songs sung among the dunes and stars of the Tenere desert. Side two showcases the electric fury of the full band, a melding of heavy, psychedelic guitar heroics with a raw garage sound, back beat percussion, all swirling in extended trance rock moves. Recorded live and unfiltered in Agadez and the surrounding desert in early 2007, with the band’s equipment powered by generators and an unflinching dedication to the rebellion, Group Bombino’s music transcends any influence and ignites the raw passion of its message to the outside world.

Nerve City - Hell cs [Amateur Depression, 2009]

@3dgm4xx7:
I gotta admit, I was kind of disappointed when I actually looked this up online and realized that the BAND is called Nerve City and the TAPE is called “Hell”, because at first I was like “Damn, this dude has serious balls! How audacious is that to call your band ‘Hell’?” With that misconception in mind, I didn’t know what to expect, but this is a really great, albeit brief, listen. Somewhere between the lonesome drifting of Mammal and the jangly semi-surf pop that’s currently taking New York by storm (i.e. Crystal Stilts, Blank Dogs, etc.) lies Nerve City, where a distant voice from a swinging telephone sings to you from the end of a tunnel over steady gusts of guitar and the occasional drum or organ. With three songs per side, this Richmond, Virginia loner vibe merchant Jason Boyer (who also indentifies himself with the omega symbol, sort of like Prince and his funky ankh) drifts by quickly enough to knock your hat off, but slowly enough to get a good whiff of what’s in the air.
Spraypainted, orange-foil tapes with xeroxed inserts.

Omar Souleyman - Dabke 2020; Folk & Pop Sounds of Syria [Sublime Frequencies, 2009]

@3567vp67:
Sublime Frequencies is pleased to present the 2nd volume of Northeast Syrian Dabke music from legendary vocalist Omar Souleyman and his group. This CD was compiled by Mark Gergis to coincide with the Sublime Frequencies UK/European tour in May and June of 2009 featuring live performances by Omar Souleyman. Culled from dozens of cassettes recorded in Syria from 1999-2008, the music here is an extension of Omar’s “Highway to Hassake” release touching on some previously unheard angles. Their trademark serpentine synthesizers, electrified bouzok (traditional stringed instrument) and driving rhythms forge a severe form of “new wave dabke” with a live energy and integrity that captures the essence of the Syrian Northeast; one of a kind Syrian Dabke party tunes, regional Atabat-styled crooners, and unbelievable Iraqi party jams. The CD is packaged in a cardboard sleeve with paper insert.

Omar Souleyman: Highway to Hassake (Folk and Pop Sounds of Syria) 2-LP [Sublime Frequencies, 2009]

@3567vp67:
Omar Souleyman is a Syrian musical legend. Since 1994 he and his musicians have emerged as a staple of folk-pop throughout Syria, but until now they have remained little-known outside of the country. To date, they have issued more than 500 studio and live recorded cassette albums which are easily spotted in the shops of any Syrian city. Born in rural Northeastern Syria, he began his musical career in 1994 with a small group of local collaborators that remain with him today. The myriad musical traditions of the region are evident in their music. Here, classical Arabic mawal-style vocalization gives way to high-octane Syrian Dabke (the regional folkloric dance and party music), Iraqi Choubi and a host of Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish styles, among others. This amalgamation is truly the sound of Syria. The music often has an overdriven sound consisting of phase-shifted Arabic keyboard solos and frantic rhythms. At breakneck speeds, these shrill Syrian electronics play out like forbidden morse-code, but the moods swing from coarse and urgent to dirgy and contemplative in the rugged anthems that comprise Souleyman's repertoire. Oud, reeds, baglama saz, accompanying vocals and percussion fill out the sound from track to track. Mahmoud Harbi is a long-time collaborator and the man responsible for much of the poetry sung by Souleyman. Together, they commonly perform the Ataba, a traditional form of folk poetry used in Dabke. On stage, Harbi chain smokes cigarettes while standing shoulder to shoulder with Souleyman, periodically leaning over to whisper the material into his ear. Acting as a conduit, Souleyman struts into the audience with urgency, vocalizing the prose in song before returning for the next verse. Souleyman’s first hit in Syria was "Jani" (1996) which gained cassette-kiosk infamy and brought him recognition throughout the country. Over the years, his popularity has risen steadily and the group tirelessly performs concerts throughout Syria and has accepted invitations to perform abroad in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Lebanon. Omar Souleyman is a man of hospitality and striking integrity who describes his style as his own and prides himself on not being an imitator or a sellout.
Sublime Frequencies is honored to present the Western debut of
Omar Souleyman with this retrospective disc of studio and live
recordings spanning 12 years of his career, culled from cassettes recorded between 1994 and 2006. This collection offers a rare glimpse into Syrian street-level folk-pop and Dabke– a phenomena seldom heard in the West, not previously deemed serious enough for export by the Syrians and rarely, if ever, included on the import agenda of worldwide academic musical committees. This is the 2-LP edition and comes in a gorgeous full color gatefold sleeve with photos and text by Mark Gergis.http://www.mediafire.com/?bzdzevnijtm -

Julie Doiron/Calm Down, It’s Monday split 7" [K Records, 2009]

@bl1hb7ix:
Julie Doiron: Honest, direct, Canadian. A singer of her own songs, from the French parts of New Brunswick. Gentle, insistent, intimate; she leaves you aching in the best possible way. Doiron and Calm Down, It’s Monday share this split single, Volume CXX of our International Pop Underground series of 7” records.
Heavy Snow finds Doiron working in the night time into the day, carrying an echoed, durable sadness; Nice To Come Home is a fitting extension of the previous song – the songwriter finding comfort in knowing that her lover is in the world and she will seem him soon. Calm Down, It’s Monday provide direct, guitar-driven introspections on Sweetest May, and Monumental; sung by Fred Squire with Julie on drums.
This new 45 rpm EP was recorded by Calvin Johnson at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Wash.

No es tan extraño, teniendo en cuenta que uno de ellos vive en Madrid; en Chueca concretamente.
