    Theo Angell - Tenebrae

    http://www.mediafire.com/?kgnyn1mdg4h

    @142ntug9:

    Theo grew up in rural Oregon, was home-schooled along with his siblings by his minister father, which provided him little exposure to mainstream pop culture; the tunes on Tenebrae reflect these conditions, documenting both a reverence for and rebellion against isolation and spiritual absolutes. To that end, the title song, which is the Latin word for shadows, references a religious ceremony that involves the extinguishing of candles and a slamming of the book in advance of holy week. The album’s song-cycle reworks various primitive musical forms (tent revival, folk, psych, fill-in-the-blank with wildly counter-cultural outsider artist) to new and celebratory ends, twisting these styles into a unique brand of folk-psychedelia. For this outing, the Tabernacle Hillside Singers include, among others, Matt Valentine, P.G. Six, Tom Greenwood, Samara Lubelski and Tara Jane O'Neil. Tenebrae highlights again Theo’s unique poly-vocal pyrotechnics and will no doubt prove to be one of the most beautiful records of the year.

    There are great sci-fi stories in the flesh of underground music, and Theo Angell is a monstrous storyteller—there can be no single universe to slay or streamline his genius. He cannot be contained within the medium, his voice becomes a giant amidst the twin peaks of yr speakers. Boasting an impressive amalgam of the sonic pH factor of the Pacific Northwest, sacred harmony singing/arranging and an extremely erudite upgrade on modern folk forms, Theo Angell's Tenebrae resonates deep in the annals of sonic architecture, the next step, or second tier, of the Cecil Sharp house. This addition is more like a modal bathysphere with a teleport than any kinda arcane "in the ground pool," tho' there is plenty here for one to deep one’s inner ear within the waters of tradition.

  • Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey - Here And Now

    @24a3pl7y:

    Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey were not only the twin anchors of power-pop juggernauts the dBs, but have since made terrific solo albums and played with other acts. Song for song, this 2009 release is on par with the duo's classic MAVERICKS. HERE AND NOW seems to issue from an alternate universe where it's always 1990, where songs with wall-to-wall hooks and heavenly harmonies are the norm, and singer-songwriters are educated at the knee of Mike Nesmith and Paul McCartney.

    The pair stick to what they are good at: suspended-fourth folk-rock ("My Friend the Sun"), Everly Brothers-esque close harmonies ("Early in the Morning"), early-'60s rockers ("Widescreen World"), and bouncy twangfests ("Some of the Parts"). Refreshingly, all the throwbacks don't add up to empty nostalgia. Indeed, the guys seem as if they are having the time of their lives–right here and now.

    The first collaboration in almost two decades by the acclaimed songwriters of The dB's. Holsapple was a touring member of REM, while Stamey played with Alex Chilton. Features legendary saxophonist Branford Marsalis on two tracks, while drummer Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Son Volt, The Mountain Goats), drummer Logan Matheny (Roman Candle, The Rosebuds), and percussionist Gary Greene (Hootie And The Blowfish, Big Head Todd) bring power to other tracks

    Review
    "With pop this piercingly pure, and Everlys-worthy harmonies to boot, The dB's songwriting team has put together another instant classic" --Blurt

    Grass Widow - Grass Widow Lp

    http://www.mediafire.com/?mtdy5hzmjkn

    @uww1nhxz:

    This is more like it - all-girl pop exuberance machine straight out of SF, playing double-time games with a sound template expanded beyond the daily standard of reverb-drenched, rudimentary pop. These ladies have a lot more going for them, reaching back to female post-punk pioneers like the Raincoats (or maybe Salem 66) to inform their busy, vibrant work. When a band can take a concept like a one-note guitar solo not so much as a defiant declaration of rule-breaking, and use it as a tool of both creation and negative space, you may have found a band that’s worth listening to, one that’s intent on surprising you within the form. Grass Widow does things like that on this debut album with such candid aplomb and candied sweetness that the form feels revitalized, and wholly their own, from art/progressive rock flourishes to dabbling in Roma/klezmer axis dance of death. I’m told that plants placed in sunlight don’t necessarily reach towards the energy source so much as move away from the absence of it. The ways in which Grass Widow’s adventurous pop plays out reminds me of such a scenario, brightening rooms with handspun inventiveness and energy.
