Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds - Dracula Boots [In The Red, 2009]
Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock
@38bsq20j:
On his new album, DRACULA BOOTS, the legendary Kid Congo Powers returns to the psychedelic jungle with a stripped down, no frills set of volcanic songs. Kid, the premier voodoo guitarist for seminal sexy swampy bands like Gun Club. Nick Cave and The Cramps is a restless aesthete. He used his earlier solo efforts to explore vocals and mix genres. With DRACULA BOOTS, Kid comes back to his roots as a crackerjack guitarist playing the primitive music that inspired him; the raw sounds of garage and early Chicano rock.
It only made sense to record such glittering gems as Thee Midniters ìI Found A Peanutî and Bo Diddleyís ìFunky Flyî in a high school gymnasium. He did this in a Midwest town called Harveyville with his nefarious Pink Monkey Birds. Bassist Kiki Solis from El Paso,TX. and Drummer Ron Miller from Macon,Ga. provided the southern soul sauce needed to fuel the engine of the rhythm train. Recording on a stage using the old PA system created a natural reverb, summoning the magic of a bygone prom interrupted by a juvenile delinquent rumble.
The original songs on DRACULA BOOTS go from loud, fuzzy biker rock (Hitchhiking) to a greasy rump shaker groove (Bobo Boogie), from a scary movie soundtrack (La Llarona) to The Meters having an acid flashback (Black Santa).
So sink your teeth into this hunk of wax and waste no time strapping on your DRACULA BOOTS. You will dance your way from the cradle to the grave, and beyond.

David Lynch Presents Fox Bat Strategy - A Tribute To Dave Jaurequi

@2cj4rnth:
Fox Bat Strategy: A Tribute To Dave Jaurequi" isn't a typical tribute album, where other performers cover the artist's work, usually after he or she is dead. Instead, this concise set of pretty, lonely songs was recorded in 1994, two years before Jaurequi passed away at age 50. David Lynch brought the guitarist together with the band that recorded the "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" soundtrack and had Jaurequi sing the director's deceptively simple lyrics.
Like the "Fire Walk With Me" music, "Fox Bat Strategy" is rooted in the '50s, half teen idol romance ("Almost An Angel") and half beatnik cool ("Rollin' Down With You"). Unlike any of the Twin Peaks music, however, these songs feel loose and lively, and arguably more like a true collaboration than the soundtracks did. Jaurequi's voice is haunting, and not just because this album was released posthumously: like an actor in a Lynch film, his whispery vocals range from boyish innocence to jaded spoken word, often within the same song, as the music follows suit. "Shoot The Works" is full of quintessentially Lynchian mood shifts, switching from romantic to menacing and back with dreamlike swiftness. "Lost On Cahuenga" is another standout, moving from blankly innocent verses that could fit in a lost Roy Orbison song to something stranger and darker in a chiaroscuro back and forth of pretty little girls and Santa Ana winds. Album opener "They Go Down" feels ahead of its time, its surreal Southwestern twang and industrial-tinged textures suggesting Calexico's more experimental moments. And while Jaurequi's voice is surprisingly good, he really sings with his fretwork on "You're The One"'s solos.
Some of Fox Bat Strategy's tracks feel a bit long, but as a whole the album is all too brief - a tantalizing glimpse of Jaurequi's artistry and Lynch's always interesting musical forays.

The Clean - Mister Pop [Merge, 2009]

@3n7reyrm:
On September 8, we will release Mister Pop, The Clean’s first new studio album since 2001’s Getaway. What can be said about the Clean? In 1978, they were the seeds of New Zealand punk. They carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in, and their influence resonated not only in New Zealand but around the world.
The New York Times described The Clean: “This New Zealand band, which has been going off and on since 1978, plays a jangly, damaged kind of guitar pop and was a primary influence on Pavement and Yo La Tengo, and therefore virtually all of current indie rock.” In 2003, we released Anthology, the 2-disc compilation of tracks and song cycles from across The Clean’s musical career. Anthology was chosen by Blender Magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Indie-Rock Albums Ever.
Mister Pop sees The Clean continue the great pop pastiche. Circus ragas (“Moonjumper”), gorgeously hazy sunset anthems (“In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul”), and the sometimes-loose Dada approach to wordsmithery continue right alongside “proper” lyrical forays, and a few Autobahn-referential instrumental moments to boot (“Tensile”). Bob’s love of pastoral UK folk has brought some added weight into the overall Clean equation, as does David’s Eastern and African guitar jones, though all this has always fit in with—and still constitutes—the total basis of the Clean sound journey.
