The Skygreen Leopards - Gorgeous Johnny (2009)

"Gorgeous" Johnny was a fringe member of the Skygreen Leopards in the group's early days; he didn't really play anything but neither could anyone else. Described by most as a phony and a self-confessed dandy, the band kept him around for his undeniable fashion sense. He would often quote Coco Chanels' views on Modernism and affected a British accent though he was from Orange County. This was a huge influence on the Donaldson/Quinn songwriting team. Eventually he moved to the south of France and no one has heard from him since except for a postcard that read: I'M STILL IN THE VAN! MUCH LOVE, JOHNNY. Anyway, his name's not really Johnny – that's just a dick joke.
It's been 8 years since the 1st SGL's record was released. Since then the boys have maintained their singular aesthetic while managing to dabble with faux-folk, avant garde pop, reverb-drenched lofi psychedelia, plastic country and blurry ballads. This latest effort finds them collaborating with Jason Quever (Papercuts) to create a melancholy world overflowing with itinerant dandies, urban streets, suburban teens, and more girls' names than I care to count, all set to melodic shuffles featuring harmonies, frail piano, and romantic guitars.
As always with the Leopards the rhythms refuse to be bridled, the boys resist the urge to jam, and they won't ever learn to sing properly. This will frustrate the expectations of some. Others will find a sweet shadowy hiding place in these songs -- 3 minutes to hang out with girls who race horses, boys who never learned to dance, and a dirty uncle who steals your cigarettes.

While Blues Control's past releases have been beauteous extrapolations into the miasmic core of psychedelia and billowing fog of ambient space, Local Flavor is the one where all the chickens have come home to roost.
The opening track "Good Morning" is practically a sideways step into boogie rock (horn accompaniment provided by none other than Jesse Trbovich and Kurt Vile); with the proper seismic shift, it could almost be heard as an alternate reality take on "Re-make/Re-model." It's easily the band's longest stomp in the forest of rock since their debut cassette, and man, them boots leave a bruise!
The remaining three tracks morph and ebb harmoniously - in true Blues Control fashion - the timbre occasionally elegiac, yet more often riffing on a plane that has yet to be transcribed. Local Flavor is 801 plus an extra one (8101, if you will), providing an unimaginable future that will take your breath aay. So make sure you've paid your oxygen bill, because there are no free rides in the 82nd Century.

"The band is the result of a unique collaboration between musicians from different sides of the Atlantic. In July 2008, Californian desert rock veteran Gary Arce was flown out to the UK to produce an album with the Kent based instrumental riff-rock quartet, Sons Of Alpha Centauri. Upon the first day of working in the studio, it was clear that “something special was taking place.” Within the space of a week Gary and the band would work together to write and record their own collaborative album. Gordon Gano, frontman of perennial misfit post-punksters the Violent Femmes, will be linking arms and guitars with brothers Billy and Brendan Ryan for Under the Sun, their forthcoming LP just announced for a September release.
Inspired by their jam sessions in the cafés of New York's West Village, Gano and the brothers Ryan promise an album of "music of a mature band, a band made of men not boys, men who have supplanted wonder for angst, controlled passion for reckless abandon." Of course, lest they throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater there'll be plenty of Gano's trademark exuberance, with lyrics like "I was a-crappin' and a-nappin'."Frank Ferrer of Guns 'N Roses fame joined the group on drums during recording sessions, and Lonnie Hiller of Maggie's Dream added her bass guitar to a few songs as well. Under the Sun is out Sept. 15 on Yep Roc.
