Eighteen years old this September, Foxbase Alpha remains one of the most dewy-fresh debut albums ever made. Newly relocated from suburban Croydon to Tufnell Park, north London, schoolfriends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs set about making what Stanley has called "a time capsule of our lives in that year". Foxbase Alpha (named after a childhood in-joke about a place filled with gorgeous people) is both retro and modern, a love letter and a scrapbook, a compendium of private passions from Dusty Springfield to King Tubby, David Mamet to football, C86 to ambient house, and London, always London. The packaging, with its Jon Savage sleevenotes and Smiths-inspired gallery of 60s icons, is gorgeous, and an eclectic bonus CD of singles, B-sides and offcuts enhances the sense of joyous adventure.
The effect is to invite the listener into a world slightly warmer, brighter and more exciting than the real one. And despite its many American influences, its Swinging London romanticism anticipated Britpop. Dios mio Maurici, con todo el cariño: ¿¿¿quien ha hecho esa portada??? Seguro que a Pelukini o incluso yo mismo no nos importaria echarte una mano con el disseny. Sobre todo esa tipografida tan fistro!.
Gracias por tu sinceridad. No se porque realmente al colgarlo me quedó realmente mal el diseño. Los que se han imprimido quedan realmente mucho mejor.
Pero cualquier ayuda sera o sería bienvenida. -

Sic Alps - L. Mansion 7'' [Slumberland, 2009]

Sic Alps have yet to really impress me but they seem pretty popular with the office folk so maybe i should give 'em a wide birth. Saying that I'm digging A-side 'L. Mansion' from the outset. It sounds like it was recorded thirty years ago and has been sitting in some clued up psyche pop collectors vault until the time is right for a psyche revival, i guess now is as good a time as any. It's simple little doo wop-esque rock'n'roll composition striped down the essential elements with the vocal playing the largest role. It sounds great and is making me want to revisit earlier Sic Alp's efforts. B-side 'Super Lungs my supergirl' is a Donovan cover performed convincingly with a ton of enthusiasm. It's worth hearing if only for the insane guitar solo and the mutant take on the original Donovan vocal. Psyche!!!
