Surfer Blood made a quite a splash this past week at CMJ. From the very first afternoon at the packed-to-the-rafters Pop Tarts show at Cake Shop, all the way through about a dozen shows in the week, Surfer Blood attracted loads of attention to their infectious garage/surf-rock. On Saturday, they played the very first set of the Showpaper/ToddP/Pitchfork benefit at Market Hotel early in the afternoon. What if I told you one of Canada's greatest living song writers is a vineyard field hand and postal worker living in rural Western Canada? Ryan Beattie has been quietly making music in the city of Vicotira (on Vancouver Island), playing guitar in critical favorites Frog Eyes and recording both solo as Himalayan Bear and with Chet, the band he formed with his brother Patrick and some friends. Chelsea Silver, Please Come Home is Chet's fourth album in seven years and first to receive release outside of Western Canada. If you are looking for an album that will challenge you, entrance you and mystify you then look no further then Chet's new long player Chelsea Silver, Please Come Home. Ryan Beattie is the main singer-songwriter behind the band from rural Western Canada, that includes his brother Patrick and some quality musical friends. Chelsea Silver, Please Come Home is the groups fourth record but first to get outside the Canadian border. With a soaring falsetto like Jeff Buckley and Fleet Foxes type harmonies, Chet successfully take you on a journey in songs like the 13 plus minute "An Abiding Love Despite Adversarial Vice" and the opening 7 minute "The Night The Night". The key about this record is that you won't get lost in the art side because Chet bring it all together with the inclusion of shorter catchy tracks like "Saint Jerome, My Baby Tames Lions" and the simple two minute mostly acoustic closer "Allerseelen". This diversity showcases the many interesting facets of Chet that should have you seeking out the group to experience them for yourself!

Offonoff's Slap And Tickle, featuring drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, bassist Massimo Pupillo and guitarist Terrie Ex, follows their prvious outting "Clash" with two epic tracks of rampaging free-rock, captured during the group's live performance at the 2007 Kongsberg International Jazz Festival. Split into two tracks "Slap" and "Tickle", the album is a full-scale sensory assault, weaving and dodging between-under-over-around all the critical comparisons with Black Flag, Pere Ubu, Sonic Youth and all their kindred. This is an album about expressive sound as sound, not in any obvious sense about musicality as compositional or musical performance. This is the sound of rock stripped to its marrow.

Richard Youngs - Under Stellar Stream [Jagjaguwar, 2009]

Richard Youngs' latest solo work for Jagjaguwar is a collection of neodruid hymns and chants for the minutiae of homelife and fatherhood – poetic transcendance through repetition and a focus on the (seemingly) micro. Once again proving himself a master of minimalist composition, Youngs also takes leaps forward as a lyricist on Under Stellar Stream, reminiscent of the list incantations of Allen Ginsberg. With this comes a change in Youngs' voice, now less pleading, deeper and more assured. In these atonal, spatial arrangements, each phrase is granted the room to work into the cerebral cortex -- and perhaps a deeper consciousness. "I am remembering now the waiting on time itself. I am remembering now the value of sleep," recites Youngs' domesticated avatar on opening track "Broke Up By Night," a celtic prayer for the modern man. On "All Day Monday and Tuesday," over droning bass and slow, meandering organ, the grind of the day becomes empyreal: "All day Monday and Tuesday, the room of work, the room of work... All day Monday and Tuesday, the clarity, the clarity."
