  • VA-The Old Lonesome Sound (2009.)

    @3rzzdfik:

    In Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, Jim White's documentary on Southern folk music, storytelling, and religion, banjoist Lee Sexton describes the traditional music of his native Kentucky hills as "the old lonesome sound."

    "These old hills are kind of sad looking," Sexton says. "You get to feeling down and out, looking at these old hills, sitting on your front porch, and you get to playing these old tunes and it helps you. It builds your morale up a little bit."

    The old tunes that Sexton was talking about are the ones that have been with us for hundreds of years: hymns and gospels, murder ballads, protest songs, African-American spirituals, old bluegrass and country standards. Whether you hear them on albums by Dylan or Springsteen, or in films like O Brother, Where Art Thou? or Cold Mountain, they are songs that get reworked again and again, that cut to the heart and soul of the American story.

    In his memoirs, Alan Lomax recalls the days on the Lower East Side of New York when Lead Belly and a young Woody Guthrie would stay up all night trading off on such songs, coming home after a show and playing for hours: "They had their whole, fresh, powerful, pure folk repertory intact: living, vibrant, and with the impact of a country mule ready to kick a hole into the future."

  • Real Estate - Live On The Radio [Underwater Peoples, 2009]

    @vhkw1cfq:

    Real Estate's debut album has been popping up in shops and as the singles and early performances alluded to, it's a beautifully soft-edged ball of nostalgia and yearning. The band has struck out on tour with kindred spirits in mellow pop, Girls and the two packed NYC's Bowery Ballroom last week in fine fashion. The band brought with them a nice slab of merch table goodness in the form of a live radio session that features many old faces from their S/T album plus a couple of new tracks that make the purchase well worth your while to source out. All songs are given a (mostly) acoustic makeover highlighting Martin Courtney's bare, emotional lyrics outside of the ebb and flow of their usual bed of rosy reverb. Songs like "Fake Blues" and "Black Lake" seem to hit home even harder when the feel good quality of the production is stepped back a notch. Its still smacks of their positive energy but the sadness underneath becomes a bit more apparent. The band's definitely found their footing live, so if they're rolling through your town be sure to catch 'em and grab one of these limited 12s while you're at it.

  • The Chinese Stars - Heaven on Speed Dial LP [Skin Graft, 2009]

    @mwrny5ya:

    Funky, noisy and daring, it is safe to say the Chinese Stars have perfected a balance between the infectious and insane on their newest effort Heaven on Speed Dial. With nine tracks of spacey, melodic rock tinged with ever-fluxing vocals, you might have a hard time deciding whether it is time to dance or chill with this record.
    “Rabbit Face” goes straight for the jugular with pulsing drums and a jagged guitar line, all of which is laced with echoey, but slightly drowned out vocals. The rhythm section keeps the beat kicking throughout the roughly three-minute run time, giving the guitars a chance here and there to venture away from the cosmic melody on repeat. “No Car No Blowjob” buzzes with bass from the first note, while a tasty guitar riff whines in the background. This track is the first taste of varied vocal approaches, as we hear a quite high vocal line battle with a more subtle, less abrasive approach in various parts of the track. The disc’s music video-yielding track “Body” brings even more of the sci-fi melodies while channeling a bit of the Blood Brothers during its catchy verses.
    “Slow Children” and “Lick it Clean” will make it difficult to deny the need to dance, as both throw the wacky melodies into solid, steady beats for undeniably fun tracks. “Thanksgiving Day Massacre” feels oddly placed after the latter of the two though, as its slower moving arrangements feel sluggish after dance-paced tempos. Even weirder is the disc ending “Bicycle,” which bases itself on a simple rhythm, but throws in sporadic riffing and chant-like, high-pitched vocals for a slightly psychedelic ending.
    Whether you’re down for some noise or some adventurous indie-rock, you can not go wrong with Heaven on Speed Dial. Be prepared to get your groove on during some of it though. [By: Jason Gardner]
