Initially inspired by Industrial, dub reggae, krautrock, radiophonics and the nascent sounds emerging from techno, hip hop and ambient, Nick Edwards began recording experimental electronic music in his teens. Using analogue synths and a basic home recording set-up, he unveiled his first (and until now, only) album under his own name on a self-released cassette in 1994.

Then, following numerous obscure projects and collaborations under various guises, Edwards eventually came to prominence as a music blogger, writing the influential Gutterbreakz blog from 2003-2009. He then returned to music making with the critically acclaimed Ekoplekz solo project, releasing work at a relentless pace across various labels, including Punch Drunk, Mordant Music, Further, Perc Trax and Public Information.

For his debut eMego release, Edwards finally steps out from behind the Ekoplekz mask, although (as the album title might suggest) the music contained within acts as both showcase for, and summary of, the sonic obsessions that have driven the Ekoplekz sound over the past two and a half years.

Working with primitive hardware and cassette four-track technology, Edwards still draws strength from his formative influences (Cabaret Voltaire, King Tubby, Suicide, Radiophonic Workshop, etc) whilst striving to carve out his own defiantly raw, lo-fi, analogue identity.

Los Emeralds son definitivamente otro grupo muy distinto de lo que eran, mucho más melódicos y accesibles. A mí no me gustan tanto, pero el disco no está tan mal. Me mola más cuando tiran de sintes que cuando empiezan con los solicos de guitarra. Sólo lo he escuchado una vez pero me ha parecido muy similar a los discos que ha ido sacando Mark McGuire para Mego, rollo emo drone jaja

A mi el de Emeralds también me ha parecido una decepción con la esperanza que tenía, ha sido firmar por mego y hacer cada disco peor. Cuando los sacaban como churros en K7 no había uno malo y ahora bajón tras bajón. Se salvan un par de cortes y ya… me quedo con Outer Space, el mes que viene Steve Hauschildt edita otro en Kranky, a ver que tal. McGuire 'emo-drone' a la lista negra.

El de Hauschildt que sacó en Kranky es la ostia, de lo mejor que se publicó el año pasado. No sabía que sacaba otro.

Toxi, ¿nada de contemporánea a reseñar últimamente?
No lo vi por aquí pero he escuchado bastante el de los nueve dedos de Nils Frahm (esta aquí gratis por si alguien gusta : http://screws.durtonstudio.com/) Resumiendo, el pianista alemán se rompió un dedo y compuso varias piezas para tocar con los nueve restantes.
Mañana tenemos aniversario Erased Tapes en Londres, seguro que te habría molado.

Menuda envidia me das últimamente Dan Hoerner. Ya podrían traerse a Nils Frahm al Primavera. Y a Dustin O'Halloran con cuerdas…
