  • golden retriever / occupied with the unspoken (thrill jockey, 2012)

    @1172m25q:

    On their Thrill Jockey debut Occupied with the Unspoken, Golden Retriever create polyphonic music from monophonic instruments. The bass clarinet and the analog modular synthesizer are generally both capable of playing only one note at a time. Starting from this point of pure melody, Golden Retriever then find ways to turn melody into harmony using their “boring old one-note instruments” to make live electronic music that is remarkably rich in textural details and almost symphonic in its use of layering. Though the music is often classified as experimental, its most salient feature is melody. It is made remarkable by the ease at which it takes the disparate elements of minimalism, free jazz, noise, classical, and even pop and shapes it all into something emotionally compelling.

    chilly gonzales / solo piano ii (gentle threat, 2012)

    @1172m25q:

    in december 2011, chilly gonzales moved his piano into paris' studio pigalle. there, alone for 10 days, he recorded a handful of songs that had made the short list from a hundred or so melodies written over the eight years that had passed since the release of the now iconic solo piano. the self-proclaimed musical genius has traveled quite a road to 'solo piano ii'. producing grammy-nominated albums and breaking a guinness world record jump-started a period during which chilly gonzales returned to the stage after several years behind a studio console working for others. with his own albums and supporting tours, chilly drew attention to his versatility as a performer and to his virtuosity as a pianist. rare is the artist that can make people dance to the trendiest electronic beats and then turn a symphonic orchestra into a back-up band for a rap concert. at the same time, chilly became the 'go to guy' for piano compositions with drake, feist, daft punk and even the late steve jobs, all calling upon him. but that was then, and 'solo piano ii' is now. indeed, it is the mark of a true entertainer to recognize that time when the greatest respect one can show his fans, is, as chilly himself noted on his 2011 release the unspeakable chilly gonzales, to simply 'shut up and play the piano.'

    library tapes / sun peeking through (auetic, 2012)

    @122uxg24:

    David Wenngren's Library Tapes now resembles something of a neo-classical supergroup with the addition of Danny Norbury (cello), Sarah Kemp (violin), and Julia Kent (cello) for 7th album, 'Sun Peeking Through'. Wenngren mans piano, rolling off solemn notes against the rarified atmospheres created by his collaborators, tending towards unprocessed acoustic recordings which really allow the grain and fingerprint of each player to shine through, while at other point subtle application of post-production accentuates the players dynamic, and at other transforms them into dreamlike memories of themselves. It's all very lovely and quite somnolent, so probably not best experienced when driving a JCB or manning a chainsaw.

    jóhann jóhannsson / copenhagen dreams (cobraside, 2012)

    @122uxg24:

    Gorgeous new soundtrack from Johann Johannsson for Max Kestner's documentary film portrait of Denmark's capital. Music plays a big part in the film. According to Jóhann: "Max Kestner approached me about writing the music for his documentary about Copenhagen. For me the project echoed the silent "city symphonies", like Ruttman's Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt, Vigo's A Propos De Nice, or Vertov's Man With a Movie Camera. Kestner's film shares with those films a desire to capture the spirit, uniqueness, and poetry of a city by assembling images of everyday life in that city. It is documentary in the poetic mode and I tried to capture this mode in the music. The tone of Kestner's film constantly shifts from the mundane to the lyrical, from the technocratic jargon of architects to the everyday banter of commuters and coffee house guests, from dry factual inventories to poetic meditations. I tried to reflect this in the music and to make the music the poetic voice of the city, so the music becomes a character of its own which binds the various levels of the film together." Limited edition vinyl pressing, beautifully presented in a reverse-board gatefold sleeve.

    @122uxg24:

    Yuco are a Japanese duo formed in 2008. On this recording their tracks slowly morph from classical acoustic guitar melodies through to post rock instrumentals. They list their recording intruments as : Programming, piano, clarinet, guitar, bass and drums. This is a duplicated cd release in a digipak sleeve.
