**Idrissa Soumaoro - Djitoumou [ 2010 ]
Idrissa Soumaoro may not be a well-known name outside of Mali but he was the writer behind one of Africa’s biggest hit songs of the 80s – ‘Ancien Combattant’, recorded by Congolese star Zao. Over the course of forty years, Soumaoro has been an integral part of Mali’s post-independence musical adventures, from playing with Les Ambassadeurs (alongside Manfila Kanté and Salif Keita) to teaching at Bamako’s Institute for the Young Blind (students included a certain Amadou Bagayoko – of Amadou & Mariam fame). Soumaoro is hugely respected in Mali for his education work – the valuable transmission of popular Malian traditions. It’s work which took precedence over his own career as an artist, and Djitoumou is only his second album. The title is a tribute to the region where he was born, around 100 km south of the capital. That’s where Soumaoro’s fascination with hunters’ music began as a child and the mystical sound of the doso n’goni (hunter’s harp) has remained a touch-stone for his own music. ‘Aou Bè Di’, the spell-binding opener to this album, and the sun-drenched ‘N’tériou’, about the lost days of youth, reaffirm his strong attachment to tradition. As a teenager Idrissa Soumaoro learnt to play the harmonica and the guitar and, forty years later, his evocative dusty blues has a lovely density. The Niafunké sound of northern Mali features on ‘Bèrèbèrè’, a track recorded with Ali Farka Touré in 2005, a year before he died. Their guitars weave together over the sound of Kipsi Bocoum on n’jarka, the traditional violin. Produced by the legendary Ibrahima Sylla, the album is an inventive mix, with melodies inspired by 1960s soul, Congolese rumba (Papa Noel also features on guitar) and Arabic folk. Tiene sus momentos. Es más, si yo estuviera en NY y coincidiera con el Gossner iría a verle. Pero bueno, que Pekh tiene razón, acabaré dándolo todo en el Apolo después de intentar convencer sin éxito a la tropa.
