Sam Prekop is known to most as the singer and songwriter of The Sea and Cake. He is a painter of some renown, a photographer and in addition he has released two solo albums of pop songs infused with his own blend of African and Brazilian guitar rhythms. Old Punch Card, his first solo effort since 2005, takes a dramatically unexpected turn away from either of these paths. Prekop described the move thus, “I’d have to say this record is pretty much unlike anything else I’ve done. There’s some relation to music I made for my book “Photographs” but really only in instrumentation. The intro to The Sea and Cake’s David Bowie cover of “Sound and Vision”, on One Bedroom is an early precedent. The most significant difference, is that I’ve left the confines of “song” structure.” The LP and CD each come in an edition of hand painted covers. “In painting the covers I found an appropriate shorthand to describing the music or re-imagining it. Start with nothing and without deduction an image appears reflecting only itself, the music arrived similarly.” said Prekop.
Taking inspiration from early music concrete and electronic music, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Nuno Canavarro, Raymond Scott, David Behrman, and free improvisation, Old Punch Card is a beautifully noisy, jagged, yet stately album of synthesizer music. The ideas and implementation of Old Punch Card (the album title alluding to the electronic, faintly mechanic origins of the music) were the result of an entirely new challenge: to do something completely different from anything else he’s ever created. To facilitate this end, Prekop implemented a series of strict guidelines for the recording of the album. No vocals, no guitar (though he slipped in this regard on one track), and no beats. Most of the sound material is generated by a modular synthesizer. By its very nature, it excels at some things and not at others. It’s very difficult to play a conventional chord, while on the other hand, it excels at creating completely unanticipated sounds and is rather effective when it comes to “chance” composing strategies.

A estos hurts los conocí cuando alguien colgó que iban a tocar en la bikini… pensé que raro, si los conciertos en esa sala son muy caros, ¿seran tan caras las entradas para estos?, ¿tendran tanto tiron?, pues la semana pasada cuando estaba de vacaciones en la habitación del hotel miraba la MTV y salían casi todos los días, tienen mucho tiron estos? Son muy conocidos? o se ha querido hacer un hype de estos y les ha salido rana?

Oneida & Pterodactyl – The Green Corridor #01 Split 12″

OK I'm not massively familiar with either artist here. I've heard a bit of Oneida here and there but I wouldn't say I was an expert. We scored these from Altin Village and they've been sat hidden in the office for a week until I salvaged them as I wanted to hear it. The Oneida side is 2 tracks of ambience and drone… that is until the 2nd track builds up into a more tribal primal Liars-y sounding weird thing. It's cool I like it! Pterodactyl are a band who have escaped me over the years. Immediately the vocal melodies are what you notice. All buttery and in harmony... the music is a blend of scratchy lo fi indie, fuzzy feedback, weird noises, psychedelia and experimental rock... All of that smothered in these tasty vocal harmonies. I'm suitably impressed! Wax only on Altin Village!

Written by X-MistEtwas Bedrohliches lauert im Unterholz, es schleicht ganz langsam und ätzt dann unverständlich vor sich hin. Wirklich bedrohlich wirkt es nicht, teilweise ist es sehr beruhigend zu wissen, dass während du in klebriger Masse hängst, du eh nicht flüchten kannst. Oneida aus Brooklyn kreieren eine Soundkulisse, die in ihrer Mystizität an Strawinsky Stücke oder Pink Floyds »Carefull with that axe, Eugene« erinnern. Das ganze natürlich in die Gegenwart verfrachtet, mit Loops und Synthy Sounds, die knarrzen, krachen und dennoch zwei ruhige Stücke untermauern, mit denen Oneida an den repetitiven, psychedelischen Sound ihrer letzen Platte Rated-O anknüpfen. Die B Seite gehört den ebenfalls aus New Yorker stammenden Pterodactyl, die gleichermaßen den Psychedelic als neuen Inputgeber entdeckt haben. Ihre vier Stücke wirken im Vergleich zur Oneida Seite wie eine Befreiung, Gesang, Gitarren und ein rhythmisches Schlagzeug. Aber auch hier gibt es dunkle Momente, Verzerrung, Gekrächze und Loopings. Das alles kommt in einer charmanten 70s Attitude daher, flächige Instrumentalisierung, Wiederholung, stoischer Gesang und portraitiert den Wahnsinn der Gegenwart, nicht mit Geschrei und chaotischen Elementen, sondern mit dich einhüllenden Melodien und scheinbar vertrauten Strukturen, die aber nicht das sind, was sie vorzugeben scheinen. Nach Oneida und Pterodactyl folgen noch Xiu Xiu, Chad Van Gaalen, Pit Er Pat, Women, Dd.Mm.Yyyy und Shooting Spires im weiteren Verlauf des Jahres. Die verschiedenen Artworks der Serie sind Teile eines Puzzles.
