The Octagon – Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever 2010.
Full of sloppy and casually exuberant post-punk grooves, comparable to The Black Lips but not so psychedelic or contrived, Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever is packed with sixteen solid tracks, all but three sub-three minutes and a good half-dozen I’d feel plenty confident placing on a mixtape for a (sadly hypothetical) hip and coy romantic interest. All of the songs are imbued with a garage-style sense of limitlessness, taking me back to when I first listed to pre-Dookie Green Day albums. The sounds is totally different, of course, but that same sense of adventure and loosely constrained melody is the same.
The album opener, “Suicide Kings,” provides perfect foreshadowing of what follows, with loose guitar work, thuggish drums, and vocals that swerve back and forth across the time signature. While the stereotypical three-chord delight is in full effect there and on many other tracks throughout Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever, other songs take a significantly different approach. “Swindler Minnows” has a fuzzy Brit sound, while “Radio Days” has a deceptively cool 90s radio-friendly ska vibe. The band’s direct influences are more evident on other tracks, with “To The Flame” clearly harkening early 90s Flaming Lips, while “Easton” calls to mind Weezer’s Pinkerton. Most songs, though, bear The Octagon’s distinct style, which reminds me of nothing else, other than perhaps promising underage up-and-comers The Zookeepers. Left coast karaoke machine enthusiast Cameron Stallones leaves no loop unturned in his endless questing for the ultimate kaleidoscopic island-psych cocktail, and relocating from the LBC to Glen Rock (half Glendale, half Eagle Rock) freed him up to construct his own hermetic jam cove – dubbed Sun Ark Studio – thereby ratcheting up his workaholic-ism several levels. And so this Sun Ark 33 RPM single serves as both a love letter to his new musical HQ and a curious vinyl document of Araw’s next next-wave. Dubby basslines and reverbed drum pad action still reign hard but the song construction is less western and more liberated than ever before (echoing his new all-solo live set up), with micro-cycles of flute, voice, FX, and organ cascading down like fuchsia sunset light across the plastic rhythm section. “Bump Up (High Step)” is a warped reggae club heartbreaker, flangy cheese guitar leads and jungle rattles, a constant chorus. “Live Mind” is the B side, and it’s descended from the Heavy Deeds lineage, lots of equatorial sweat, low end pulse, dry funk guitar, bucket percussion, etc. A cool new boat trip on an evolved vessel. Brian Jonestown Massacre - Who Killed Sgt.Pepper? (2010)
Working with musicians of the likes of Will Carruthers (ex Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized), Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir (who recorded vocals on the last BJM album) & Felix from the Russian band Amazing Electronic Talking Cave & other musicians from France, Germany, & Iceland, this is the band’s most multi cultured release to date, while obviously keeping the band’s trademark style throughout this album.
13 tracks ranging from the ambient bhangra beats, rock, shoegaze, to gypsy influences of Eastern Europe music & then back again to the subliminal all twinged with the psychedelia of the band.
The album is chock-full of jam-tastic tracks. If you are into deep bass, squealing guitars, faint, chanting vocals, and hypno-dance beats, this album is for you.
