The Fresh & Onlys - Secret Walls ep [Sacred Bones, 2011]

The Fresh & Onlys have had an unusually prolific past couple of years. On the heels of their critically acclaimed album Play It Strange, the band returns with a bold creative leap forward on their new EP Secret Walls. The cavernous opening sounds of Secret Walls reveal the strong threads of hazy post-punk melancholy that have been woven throughout the band’s catalog and have now fully matured.
Tim Cohen’s crooning baritone is more confident and commanding than ever as it is sewn into the dizzying tapestry of melody, while the guitar sounds of Wymond Miles often suggest the dynamic interplay of Verlaine/Lloyd. Long in the works, this EP was recorded in guitarist Miles’ San Francisco studio and properly captures their ambience while bringing forward Kyle Gibson’s lock-step drumming and the unique melodic play of bassist Shayde Sartin. It is the next logical step for the F&O’s and their moody, jangly guitar pop.
Last year’s Play It Strange was received with wide acclaim from an enormous amount of press outlets including Spin Magazine. It was also #29 on Pitchfork’s top 50 albums of the year. The Fresh & Onlys toured with Deerhunter and Clinic, and performed at the Matt Groening curated ATP in Minehead England. Heralded as “one of rock’s hardest working bands,” they head out on tour this Spring, playing a handful of shows at SXSW and then embarking on a North American tour in April, and a full European tour in May, culminating with a performance at the Primavera Festival in Barcelona.

Spectre Folk is the pet project of Magik Markers dude Pete Nolan. "Blackest Medicine Vol 2" is a beautiful collection of hazy folk/psych jams that fits perfectly into the Woodsist catalog. Nolan assembled an amazing group of musicians for his latest release, including Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) on drums, Pete Meehan (The Grey Lady) on guitar, and Aaron Mullan (Tall Firs) on bass. Pete Nolan, Pete Meehan, Aaron Mullan and Steve Shelley made this record.
Jeremy Earl did the art. Recorded at Echo Canyon, except for parts of A1, which were recorded at home.Magik Markers' Elisa Amborgio has this to say about the record:
"The band entered Echo Canyon West with the intention of recording a 7-inch of the up-tempo version of “The Blackest Medicine,” the title cut from the 2007 home-fi Woodsist debut. After several sessions, they emerged with a four-song studio collage monster that won’t fit in your locker and smells like smoked banana peels and undies blowing down an alleyway. "Terakaf (meaning “The Caravan” in Tamashek) was founded by guitarist/vocalist Kedou ag Ossad(nicknamed “Khiwaj” or “The Giant”) and guitarist/bassist/vocalist Liya Ag Ablil, aka Diara. Both men had previously been members of the Tinariwen ensemble; in fact, Diara is co-leader Inteyeden’s younger brother. Each made important contributions to the latter outfit’s development, but Kedou, a hero of the Touareg Rebellion, was inspired to leave his Sahara-based hometown of Kidal, Mali for extended stays Algeria and Libya.
Upon his return, he re-established his partnership with Diara and they invited Rhissa Ag Ogham (guitars, vocals – he had been in Libya with Kedou and is also a talented painter) and Sanou Ag Ahmed (guitars, bass, vocals) to join in.
Terakaft made its live debut at the 2007 Festival In The Desert, recorded a first album, Bismilla (The Bko Sessions), and embarked upon an extensive European tour. The present CD, which also features a guest turn from singer Issa Dicko, was recorded in Anjou, France, and co-produced by Jean-Paul Romann of the French supergroup Lo’Jo [1]. Shortly thereafter, Terakaft shared the stage with Tinariwen [2] at the famous Olympia concert hall in Paris before appearing with them again at the “Les Nuits Sahariennes d’Essouk” Festival back in Mali. el de The Oh Sees me gustará Zack?de TV Ghost no sé si controlas el anterior, chema, estaba de puta madre, de lo más oscuro que he escuchado de in the red
la filtración de Krallice me ha dejado planchadísimo, en la vida esperaba encontrar filtraciones de mick barr. yo controlo sobre todo a Orthrelm (una de las salvajadas más grandes de la creación) y CromTech, de Krallice he oído hablar pero no había escuchado nada. lo jodido con este hombre es que tienes que encontrar un momento muy preciso para escucharlo sino igual te acabas tirando del balcón.
por cierto no sabía que había colaborado con zach hill, algo de info al respecto?estado de ánimo: gordo

el de the fresh and onlys te refieres? no se si te gustará, puede que si, es una banda de la onda esta pop garagero (como thee oh sees), pero este ep es de lo más limpio que han sacado, a mi si me ha gustado, en una primera escucha.
el de tv ghost a mi también me gustó mucho el anterior a ver que tal
lo de zach hill con mick barr lo conocía, pero nunca me he puesto con ello, creo que me pasó eso que comentas, elegí un mal momento cuando me lo puse, puede ser. creo que sacaron 2 discos.y ya que hablamos de zach hill, aquí va un ep nuevo que sacó solo digitalmente hace unos meses:

manel, a mí me dió más o menos fuerte por investigar a mick barr hace unos meses y por poco no acabo tomando ansiolíticos…
además de los de orthrelm, tengo tres o cuatro discos de ocrilim, que en general es muy del palo orthrelm última época: repeticiones neuróticas y paranoicas crispa nervios. como ocrilim graba él solo. a veces ocrilim se llama octis, hasta el punto de que hay discos que aparecen publicados bajo los dos nombres. si te gusta el 'OV', puedes darle un tiento al 'annwn', publicado en hydra head, más que nada porque es el disco más de sello que tiene, porque todo es la misma neura. hora y pico de poner a prueba el aguante del que escucha. ése está aquí... http://debutantedebris.blogspot.com/200 ... -2008.html

y krallice… esta mañana le he dado una escucha al nuevo y no pinta nada mal, pero... el primero me parece una auténtica barbaridad porque suena salvajísimo, en el segundo todo parecía un pelín más controlado y en éste da la impresión de que siguen domesticándose un poco. krallice son el grupo pop de mick barr, tienen un éxito notable en el mundillo heavy y cada vez están más asentados, a pesar de que al principio hablaban de que era una colaboración puntual. además, en el primero el que canta es mick barr. luego metieron a un tipo al bajo que hace voces guturales y se reparten las voces. en el nuevo canta más el de las voces de toro... de krallice hay que empezar por el primero.

los de orthrelm a mí los que me gustan son estos más pesados y de repetición. los otros no me gustan tanto. "OV" por ejemplo me dejó totalmente lelo, fijo que escuchar ese disco seguido resta neuronas.
gracias por la info sobre ocrilim, etc.. es curioso lo de que tocaba el bajo en quix o tic, el tio es del area de DC y tal.
