A new album from Sun City Girls’ founding member Sir Richard Bishop is always something to be excited about, but this gets double points for coming from the Idealogic Organ camp, Steven O’Malley’s already essential new imprint for Editions Mego. Those who have already heard Bishop’s singular solo guitar explorations will no doubt already know how arresting the man’s compositions are, but ‘Intermezzo’ really stands as the finest representation of his craft for some time. Bishop has long been an artist you’ve really had to see live to get the true experience, and ‘Intermezzo’ feels something like a one-on-one with the man himself as it drifts, ducks and dives throughout his wide reaching cache of styles. The humid Middle Eastern shakes of ‘Dance of the Cedars’ are a perfect counterpoint to the gorgeous 12-string bliss of ‘Inner Redoubt’ and the electrically charged reverse-drone of ‘Reversionary Tactics’. ‘Intermezzo’ almost feels like a great mixtape, but one with a cautious narrative hand – the tracks never sound too disjointed from one another, rather they tell a tale, and it’s one that you’ll want to sink into time and time again.
