Mary’s Voice is the warmest and most accessible invitation yet into Julian Koster’s world—the culmination of a vision he has been realizing for over a decade.
That vision began taking shape in the ’90s, during which time Koster also became a key member of Neutral Milk Hotel and a contributor to The Olivia Tremor Control and other legendary members of the enormously influential Elephant 6 Collective. Since then, Koster (along with long-time collaborator Robbie Cucchiaro on horns) has pushed the boundaries of what audiences have come to expect from an “indie rock” band—staging unique caroling and lullaby tours, performing alongside mechanical contraptions like the 7-Foot-Tall Metronome, and displaying virtuosity on both the singing saw and orchestral banjo.
Mary’s Voice, the follow-up to 2008’s acclaimed Music Tapes for Clouds and Tornadoes, is part one of a planned two-part album and inaugurates a newly active phase in The Music Tapes’ evolution—with plans to tour the world in a circus tent later this year and an NPR radio serial in the works. Recorded with The Music Tapes’ signature method of using recording machines of both past (early 1900s, ’30s, ’40s, ’60s) and present to achieve a timeless sound, the album is, in Koster’s own words, “a holiday from what is so often mistakenly called the ‘real world’… In music, time can disappear the way it does in long summer evenings when we’re allowed to go out and play as kids, or afterwards, when exhausted, we dream.”

Just when you thought Giant Sand couldn't get any bigger, Howe Gelb has done just that by regrouping, expanding and magnifying his vision with the newest version of Giant Sand, calling it (appropriately enough) GIANT GIANT SAND. As a sort of homage, he's named the album "Tucson" after the town he's called home for forty years. This self-described country rock opera by one of music's leading risk-takers, is set to be released on June 11th, 2012 on Fire Records.
In GIANT GIANT SAND you will recognize the members all hailing from Denmark who have been a part of Giant Sand for the last 10 years, plus the new string section now added and also the inclusion of stunning pedal steel player Maggie Bjorklund.

Décor Records presents the second album by Sacri Cuori. Their sound is somewhere between Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Piero Piccioni or Calexico, Ry Cooder and Tom Waits. The stellar all star cast includes Jim Keltner (Stones, Dylan, Beatles) David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) Isobel Campbell, Joey Convertino (Calexico), Stephen McCarthy (Long Ryders) and JD Foster (Green on Red, Richmond Fontaine) at the helm producing with Antonio. Think Spaghetti Western soundtracks crossed with desert rock and a bit of Nancy and Lee thrown in. Sacri Cuori born from an idea of the head of the Strade Blu festival (Italy), Antonio Gramentieri: he played tons of stuff with many different artists, starting from a solid blues approach and then taking a left turn on soundtrack music. His music includes shades of all his different paths in music, from straight folk to noise/advantgarde.

of Montreal's Kevin Barnes is one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation. Rarely does a day go by when Barnes won't be found in the studio he built at his Athens, GA home. Whether practicing different recording techniques or exploring new directions with his musical output, Barnes is constantly working to refine his craft.
Equally as impressive as the number of songs of Montreal has released is the breadth of genres they span. It is beyond a doubt that the band has never released the same record twice – and the band's new rarities collection is no expection.
Daughter of Cloud compiles 17 of Montreal recordings ranging from the Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? era to the present. Ten of the album's songs are previously unreleased, while the other seven were originally issued on rare, out-print, or limited edition CDs and 7"s.

For this album, Sean Ragon built his own recording studio from scratch in the back of his record store. This allowed him to control every aspect of the album and to take his time recording; he plays five different instruments on LWP and also engineered and mixed the album by himself. The record features contributions from Glenn Maryansky on drums and Christiana Key on violin as well as percussion from the enigmatic ning nong and female vocals from former Battletorn vocalist Beverly Hames. For long time fans of the project, Love Will Prevail sees the marriage of the spontaneity of the earlier releases with the better recording quality of the more recent eponymous LP. This album expands on the psychedelic neofolk foundation of the early work and adds lush atmospheres not dissimilar from Austrian post- industrial futurists Nový Svět (or even the more haunting side of late-60s Miles Davis). There is also an intentional nod to the Crass Records bands that influenced Ragon as a teenager and a tasteful hint of Velvet Underground worship. The lyrical content is also fairly politically charged this time around, and serves as a plea for peace in a world gone mad. The first single, “Man and Man’s Ruin” finally realizes the majestic beauty that has always been bubbling under the surface of Ragon’s work. Love Will Prevail is by far and away Ragon’s crowning achievement and the true embodiment of DIY idealism.

toy release their immense self-titled debut album through heavenly recordings. it was recorded during the spring of 2012 with dan carey in his south london studio. toy is a korg delta led five-piece formed in 2010. it consists of tom dougall (vox / guitars), dominic o'dair (guitars), maxim barron (bass / vox), alejandra diez (synthesizers / modulation) and charlie salvidge (drums / vox). toy's musical influences incorporate a wide range of genres including punk, psychedelia, krautrock, post rock to name a few and they explore experimental recording techniques in the studio. the album is a massive slab of sound with swaying swells of guitar and hypnotic, motorik passages. think a mix of house of love, my bloody valentine, the nuggets boxset and neu!
