      holograms / holograms (captured tracks, 2012)

      @y09mdx0k:

      Despite being perpetually too poor to drink dusted dive-bar drafts, Stockholm’s Holograms still manage to projectile vomit their fare share of poison. Their regurgitations originate more from the nausea inherent with menial labor in the desolate warehouses of Sweden than alcohol abuse; ultimately making it more enjoyable to sift through. In defiance of their decrepit instruments (a collective estimated worth of a handful of Kronas) Holograms emit a seemingly impossible energy. Their sound synthesizes the drudgery of dismal existence with a lust for something better; echoing both the violent abandonment of punk as well as some of the electronic gloss of early 80's new wave. Their sound has proven far too large for Stockholm’s charred pavement and empty streets; leading us to think it’s about time for all of us to get a little drunker together. / Mike Dupar

            frank ocean / channel orange (def jam, 2012) - itunes version (m4a)

            @2eccnb14:

            Frank Ocean has character. He's rare. In a world that divvies up art by genre, that constantly seeks to quantify cool, he is impossible to miss, like a panda bear in a pine forest. And over the past year or so, he's become harder and harder to ignore. Frank had long labored behind the curtain—writing for Brandy, Justin Bieber, and John Legend—but after hooking up with L.A.'s Odd Future collective, he self-released 2011's nostalgia, ULTRA. mixtape, and his own star quickly rose. Original songs like "Novacane" and "Swim Good" showcased his knack for riveting storytelling and arrangement, climbed the R&B charts, and led to collaborations with Beyoncé, and Kanye West and Jay-Z. But Frank isn't about accolades and accomplishments. He's a less-is-more kind of guy, the quiet type who saves his words because his songs tell us as much about him as they do ourselves. His live show emphasizes that intimacy, closes that razor-thin gap between the man and his fans. Because as rare as he is, Frank Ocean is also familiar, both in the way he moves among us, undeniably a product of this post-everything, hustle-hard, DIY musical moment, and in the way he conveys that quality that we're all always seeking: utter timelessness.

                                      nuevo album de este dúo de nashville. no confundir con el reciente ep de adelanto de mismo nombre.

                                      jeff the brotherhood / hypnotic nights (infinity cat/warner, 2012)

                                      @vn0ahksf:

                                      The real-life brothers behind JEFF the Brotherhood, Jake and Jamin Orrall, know how to find the sweet spot that connects larger-than-life rock majesty to good-natured every-guy doofiness. They're the sort of shaggy-haired dudes who doff their shirts, crack open beers and break out the taxidermy before performing songs from We Are the Champions in the NPR Music offices. But then they bash out heroically anthemic rock 'n' roll that's as polished and sweetly hooky as it is hedonistic.

                                      With The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach producing, JEFF the Brotherhood's big-label debut, Hypnotic Nights, doesn't want for polish or sweet hooks: The Nashville duo rightly gets compared to the Ramones and Weezer a lot, and Hypnotic Nights draws from the shiniest side of both bands. Still, the new record, out July 17, is a gleefully debauched blast of beer-loving, party-friendly celebration. It's somewhat front-loaded — the album's back half slows down amid the sax and sitar of "Region of Fire," and closes with a lengthy cover of the Black Sabbath ballad "Changes" — but the best stuff is virtually irresistible.

                                      As mission statements go, it's hard to top the album-opening "Country Life," which chronicles the purest joys of JEFF the Brotherhood's existence — beer, dogs, records, youth, "a place where I can smoke meats" — while still understanding that there's plenty more to appreciate beyond the county line. "Country Life" is followed immediately by the even-simpler pursuits of "Sixpack," but that song only makes Hypnotic Nights more relatable: There's no time like midsummer for listening to best friends and brothers sing rock 'n' roll songs about beer. There'll be lots of opportunities for thinking when September rolls around.

                                          90's Emo / Philly Emo / Twinkle Daddies. Similar a Algernon Cadwallader, Snowing…

                                          @2t5lkm1k:

                                          There's some line at the beginning of a review of The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Miss Machine" that loosely goes, 'that's it, it's all over, pack your shit, go home. DEP just finished this genre." Sorry for the tangent, but it was the first thing that came to mind at the end of "irrevocable, motherfucker" when the line "I'm not saying that," is being strained over the twinkling guitar and a horn that blend together into essentially everything that twinkly emo over the last four years has been trying to do. So fuck it: twinkle is over. Glocca Morra, with "Just Married," have ended the genre. I say that in the most endearing way possible - this album is perfect. Twinkle gets thrown around like a bad word, I have a feeling Glocca Morra would like to beat me up for seeming to pigeon-hole them as such. I don't mean it in the "twinkle daddy disciple" copycat kind of way. But here, I equate it with that immeasurable, indescribable sense of youthful longing and desire and self-deprecation and frustration, kind of like "youthful saudades." Does anybody know that feeling where you gets chills during every single song on an album? That's this one for me, and I don't remember the last time that happened (maybe with the Colossal LP). It's throaty like GM has always been, note the beginning of "ya'll boots hats" and "why am i not…". But, goodness, listen to how they turn the latter into an anthem in the last 35 seconds as the bass grumbles and the guitar careens in over the blaring vocals. It's fun, because one could easily write about each one of the songs. But there is not one best song here, it's just 31 minutes of pure bliss. This is not midwest emo, a la Castevet or Grown Ups, this is what Philadelphia has always done best: overwrought and emotional music with the best twinge of fun and playful musicality. When we look back years later at our youth, this record will be the best shot at trying to express to our friends and family what we loved about emo music from Philadelphia. As far as I can tell, this record only has a little competition in being an album of the year (Everyone Everywhere's second LP and Hop Along's incredible "Get Disowned" are the only ones that comes to mind). Please buy the shit out of this and play it so loud that your neighbors have to invite themselves in to both berate you and mutually bask in the glory of "Just Married."
