We have lost dance's most visionary, influential figure, who redrew the map of the theatre arts

A simple note on the Wuppertal Dance Theatre's website says it: this morning, 30 June, Pina Bausch died, aged 68 – quickly, after a cancer diagnosis five days ago. Only two Sundays ago, she appeared on stage at the Wuppertaler Opernhaus.

This is an appalling shock and a tragedy not only for the dance world, but also for the entire international arts world. Bausch's visionary work as dancer, choreographer and creator of the Tanztheater Wuppertal had a reach way, way beyond the confines of the German town where she worked. Theatre and opera simply wouldn't look the way they do today without Bausch; she has also had an enormous influence on visual art and cinema, too (Almodóvar's Talk to Her contains sequences of her work). I can't count the number of times I've seen work that either pays tribute – or cheaply rips off – Bausch's subversive, distinctive choreographic creations. Subtley but clearly, she redrew the map for the theatre arts.

The official tributes and obituaries will pour in. As a personal response – not as an expert in contemporary dance, simply as an enthusiastic member of the audience – I will be grieving for the loss of the most original voice in dance today. More than that, every performance that one saw (and her relatively rare appearances in London were instant sellouts, usually attended by a cultish, extraordinarily chic audience almost as watchable as her shows) was an event that left one emotionally changed, whether drained or elated or touched by an unspeakable beauty.

Instant memories – the dirt and sheer savagery of her early work Rite of Spring, brought to Sadler's Wells last February, which left me pinned to my seat with terror. The same programme brought Cafe Müller - a classic work recalling her childhood memories of her parents' cafe, was confusing, troubling, strange, obsessional, wistful. Kontakthof, brought to the Barbican in 2002, was a deeply moving piece that was performed by dancers in their 60s and 70s, forcing the audience to confront prejudices and fears about old age. Then the sheer beauty of Nelken, in which the stage is covered by thousands of carnations. Or Nefes, her late, Turkish-inspired work, in which the anguish and frustration expressed in earlier pieces was exchanged for something more (but never simply or unambiguously) joyous. A trademark was the way she asked her dancers to express not just the purity of their bodily movements, but their inner vulnerabilites, sometimes anger.

Watching a work by Bausch was never less than a dangerous, and profoundly fulfilling, experience. We will all mourn her. (the guardian)

Ví unos 30 minutos y si no hubiera sido por tener curro que hacer, me hubiera quedado a ver más. La traducción de Cuatro fue de juzgado de guardia, así que en un corte publicitario me pasé a CNN+ y ví cosas que los de Cuatro no emitieron por el prolongado corte.

Y pensar que hay gente que cuestiona ese acto. Si se hubiera producido un funeral íntimo, hubieran dicho que querian esconderse o vete tú a saber que gilipollez por el estilo.
Lo que relamente me pareció absolutamente surrealista es ver a Nieves Herrero hablando de Jackson en el programa de ayer tarde en A3. Ya ves, una que estuvo 10 minutos en una cuchipanda promocional con el y es capaz de hablar del tema.

..bueno,claro,para a l@s que Michael ha significado algo és normal que estuviérais tropecientas horas delante de la tv,yo supongo que también lo haré cuando muera alguno de esos tótems que me gustan… però con Michael? Bah! ...si total esta mañana ya he tenido que escuchar en la ràdio quinientasmil veces a la Paris (No la Hilton) lloriqueando en el funeral ( y yo no digo que eso no sea ennudagargantas ) y también trozos del "We are the world" y los highlights y tal...todo resumidito y sin publicidad ,eso sí, algún dia que tenga tiempo busco los cortes en el youtube para ver la imágenes y ya està...para qué perder el tiempo si por lo que he leído aquí tod@s l@s traductores eran una mierda...

En el bar de chinos donde estaba siendo humillado en la timba magiquera de los martes por la tarde (putos Goblins, que una baraja tan tonta dé tantos problemas) tenían puesta la retransmisión del entierro, sin sonido ni nada, gracias a Mao Tse-Tung… a mí lo que me puso el vello en punta fue cuando salió a hablar Magic Johnson y en la pantalla lo anunciaron como KOBE BRYANT. No sé qué canal era, la verdad.

AÑADO: Lo del eternal moonwalk mola mil. Yo me estuve 10 minutos ahí hipnotizado.

Dear friends,

With great sadness I have to announce to you, our friends, that Dani passed away yesterday, July 8. On Tuesday morning I woke to find her unconscious, and not breathing. The medics were called, and she was revived, but fell directly into a coma and didn't wake up. She passed away yesterday at 3pm, with her family by her. All that is known to say why is that her heart stopped, for no foreseeable reason. The only relation is that her father died in the same way, of a cardiac arrest at the age of 29. She was 26.

Right now I don't know how to express the loss and sadness I feel, knowing that someone so ultimately close to me, and such an inspiration and friend to so many other people in the world is gone. All I can say is that she won't be forgotten, or pushed aside only because she's gone. She'll always be with me, as my inspiration, my love, my everything. All I can say is I miss her, every second.

Right now I won't be able to answer many emails, as there's only so much I can talk about this. Time will heal this, but I know the sadness will never go away. This, I'm ok with, as I never want to forget every way she changed my life, and touched my heart.

I appreciate all your support and love, and even though many of you only knew her through her poetry, or her music, I hope they are good memories. Enclosed is a favorite photo of her, taken at her beach, at home.
