Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra is a Japanese instrumental band based in the musical style of afrobeat, drawing influence from Fela Kuti. Their first album, Afrosoundsystem was released in 2009 and inlcudes a solid lineup of traditional, yet innovative afrobeat grooves, carrying the legacy of Fela and bringing the music of Nigeria to the world
The album features a collection of solid afrobeat grooves that capture the mood of their live performances well. With a three-man horn section plus flute and plenty of percussion, the music has a rich multi-layered sound. After the intro, Secret Mission, a high-paced number that stands out even among the myriad of new afrobeat songs that have been made in the past few years in different corners of the globe. Days Of The Glory has a slower groove with the trademark shuffling drum sound and a great lolloping bassline that makes you want to move no matter what.
The other high points of the album include The Spirit Why Fela Fights, another slow groove with a great horn riff. This track chugs along nicely until about a minute from the end when the tempo changes to a funk workout that marks the transition into a cover of Fela's J.J.D., opening with percussion and some tight funky drumming that leads into some amazing flute work that drives the main part of the tune, with the horns coming in for the refrain.
Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra put on an amazing show and are well worth catching live, but failing that you could do a lot worse than pick up a copy of AfroSoundSystem. Highly recommended.

Si lo habia visto lo de Rototom Sunsplash en Benicassin. Pero puff son muchos dias, aun siendo un cartelazo. Como dices lo han dejado de hacer en Italia por que la poli hacia redadas a la peña y les dejaba sin combustible a los rastas. Yo la verdad es que a festivales o me los montan en Madrid o el Primavera y el Funtastic. Ya tiene que ser un sarao de cojones. Como lo de Febrero en las Bahamas….
Os dejo uno de los mejores discos de DUB de siempre. Y uno de mis favoritos. Es uno de los discos con mas fantasia de sonidillos DUB que te puedes echar a los oidos. Mikey Dread hace un trabajo para sonreir y descubrir en cada escucha.

The World Ends is the latest title from Soundway Records showcasing a wave of guitar driven and psychedelic groups that sprung up in Nigeria during the early 1970s. Featuring 32 electrifying and funk laden grooves, this is the sound of a generation attempting to pick up the pieces after the devastation of the Nigerian civil war. This bumper collection is brimming with youthful exuberance, fuzzed out guitar and cosmic organ vibes and owes much to the psychedelic sounds of Jim Morrison, Santana, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and James Brown. As the summer of love was blossoming in London and San Francisco, Nigeria was imploding into civil war. Also known as the Biafra war of 1967, it was a grisly conflict taking over three million lives yet at the same time the country was being pulled apart there was a new world beginning. The tracks featured represent a forgotten chapter in Nigeria's musical history when the youth threw their varied morsels into the pot from hard rock to psychedelic soul when guitars were cherished instruments, symbolic of a new movement, when highlife and Afrobeat played second fiddle to 'The beat'.

Five Alarm funk is an afro-funk orchestra from Vancouver, BC. The group has four percussionists, 2 guitars, a bass, trumpet, trombone and 2 saxophones that create a terrific blend of funk sound intertwined with afro-beat rhythms. The group has toured all over Canada and played at the Molson Canadian Hockey House after Canada struck gold in hockey at the Vancouver 2010 olympics.
Anything is Possible will be their third studio album release. The band never ceases to be a dance party. In the album you can hear very world inspired rhythm and melodic lines mixed into Western jazz and funk styles. The result is something that appeals to older jazz fans as well as the younger generation. The 11 track album never ceases to amuse as each track is varied a bit in style and influences. The album starts off with Infernal Monologue which begins with a children’s choir and then moves on to some creepy sounding licks that almost sound like heavy rock. The next track is some straight funk which then moves onto an entire album of very fun and diverse tunes that you should totally check out

Mañana jueves pincho con esta gente en el Clandestino. Yo creo que molará, porque se podrán escuchar cosas brasileñas bastante raras. Suele haber ambientazo, pero me dicen que han arreglado el aire, o sea que ya no debería hacer tanto calor.

)Antes el Clandestino había días que cerraba a las 6 o 7 y un asiático muy simpático te acompañaba hasta la salida trasera a través del almacén.

Creo que ya va tocando poner sonido al fín del verano.
Disco de belleza quebradiza, de canciones de cristal, con arreglos que hacen que las melodías cuelguen de unos filos hilos, hipnótico y balsámico para estos días en que uno trata de luchar contra la vuelta al tedio o por continuar en el. El de Santos no creo que pueda negar, al menos en este disco, que ha oído y aprendido mucho de la forma que tiene el gran Vinicius Cantuaria de, no solo enfrentarse al cancionero brasileño, sino en adaptarlo a ciertas formas contemporáneas. En este disco también oímos esos tenues arreglos electrónicos que encontramos en discos como Sol Na Cara (gran obra maestra, por cierto) del de Manaus. Y creo que la cosa es muy clara en la versión que Luiz hace de esa pequeña maravilla de Jobim que es Este Seu Olhar, que suena como a continuación de la versión de Cantuaria.
No se me pongan muy melancólicos cuando lo oigan, todavía no han llegado los domingos con lluvia pero, como he dicho antes, este es un disco para los colores y sensaciones de finales de verano.

El domingo estuve en un concierto de las Pepper Pots y quede sorprendido de lo bien que estuvo. Soul vocal femenino de los 60's de primera categoría. Buenas armonías vocales, banda de lujo con un bajo potente y una sección de viento espectacular, en fin un concierto para disfrutar al 100%. A partir de ahora estas chicas y sus músicos tiene todo mi respeto. Por cierto, vaya temazo el 'Time To Live'.
